I am thinking of buying a CB72/77, can anyone point me in the right direction as what to look for , regarding engine longevity etc,40k ,and rebuilds, many thanks .

Ash?

Where the kickstart shaft pivots in the right side engine case splits the case, check its not wobbling around in there. Other than that I have found them very strong engines, sprinted them for a while, even bored out.

Many Thanks Bryan & Tomb for your input, I viewed one today fitted with Gold Star pipes, was not impressed ,they sounded better on my previous Goldie with the Twitter , but this one sounded more like a lister , thanks again ,

They are ok but much overrated IMHO . Very fragile kickstart mechanism and weird gearbox and ratios . The autoadvance is inbetween camshafts and prone to wear so a much bigger pain to fix than any other Honda I have ever owned. I have a 1964 CB72 as part of my collection but for me give me a 68/69 CB250SS any day.

A good way of finding a decent one is on the dedicated UK CB72/77 Facebook group.
Lots of old bods (like me ;D) on there with multiple bikes and always plenty for sale.
My friend on there Graham Curtis is a bit of an expert and rebuilds cranks and other hard to find parts.
His charges are very reasonable.

Many Thanks Ash, for the info, I have viewed a couple Tidy ones both fitted without standard looking silencers so was a tad noisy for me in my advancing years, I think my heart was ruling my head ,probably 50 or so yrs ago it may have been different, now want a more upright riding , keeping the 550, Thankyou again , Dave .. Thankyou for the downloads

No worries .. when I 1st got a '66 CB72 in 1975 my GF (now my wife) took one ride on the back of it and advised me to get rid as she said she had one of her 'nasty feelings' about it :D ... it seemed incredibly dated even back then. So bought for £32.50 then sold within the same summer vacation for £65 ... those were the days eh ! Why was it so cheap .. you guess it folks the kicksart mechanism was broken but luckily the seller had the parts to fix but i guess he couldn't be bothered.. he was a posh accountacy student from Alwoodley Leeds
I see you also have an S90 ... any piccies? I have a '66 reg'd one with the dinky little alloy winkers, 45 degree downpipe ..offset carb etc. One of the few 60'/70's Hondas that had either Keihin and Mikuni carbs fitted. i got both types with mine but decided on the keihin as i haer bad reports on the Mikuni one.

Nice one ...looks like S90 hails from York originally
-
Yes Ash , spent most of its time around York ,as it had two previous owners , it does get used on vmcc and local runs etc , I love it . And so does my grandson , starts first or second kick

My 1st bike was a C200 90 Sports but when I saw the S90 brochure everything about that model was better than the C200. My S90 was the last project I bought and hopefully the last (same colour as yours) but with the earlier exhaust & offset carb.
