Did you check the ohm-readings on the 3 stator wires? That will tell you something. The regulator is more likely to fail...
I will google how to do that

In the sealed bag with all the brackets & fittings was this Grommet.

Could it be an item used on different models that the exhuast also fits so it replaces the square one in silencer pipe two?

To do it right and making sure all the bits are fitted correctly you should remove lower crankcase.
Kickstart knuckles are like chromed rocking horse poo to find

I will Bryan, at the moment the yellow & blue wires from the points are disconnected . it's not connected as I used the test lamp method to do static timing.
I intend to find tune that before I try first start up.

The least common no charge is the generator,
Most common is bad connection
Next is regulator, especially electronic ones

Thats what i remember, rubber boot in space at top right of battery as you look at it.

Ted, before you try running the motor check that the blue and yellow from points are plugged in inside that boot, several times i have been caught out when i have mad last minute alterations somewhere and one of thos has pulled out so it only fires on 2!

Not a favourite of silicone, just a tad tpp much can block the oilways. When using original Honda top sets we never had a problem till asbestos was removed from the fibre material

Perfect Bryan, could I just eliminate the spliced in brown then?

Got it, the only reason for the extra brown is the fact the steering lock is on the ignition switch so you need to feed the sidelights from there, just joining both to the one brown on the 4 wire will be fine as it does not have a steering lock built in.
I would suggest a padded P clamp on the frame tube holding the bracket the switch fits in.
