Title: Pin removal
Post by: Deano400 on February 11, 2018, 03:39:17 PM
I could do with some advice on removing a pin from the crankcase. The pin is near enough flush with the case and I can't get any real grip on it. Looks like the engine was built (maybe rebuilt) with the bearing not in the right position so pin is jammed in, bearing is shattered (still runs smooth though). New pin required, was going to change all bearings anyway.

Plenty of heat, turn case upside down and hit with appropriate hammer, it may fall out. Or, spot weld a bolt to it and remove it that way. Someone may have fitted the wrong size pin in there, check to be  sure case isn't fractured the other side of pin.

Thanks Julie. I think I'll try the heat first, I'm not the best welder and am worried I'll do damage to the case.

Heat is worth a try as even if the pin doesn't come out all the way, it may move enough for you it get some grips on. That bearing looks interesting  ;D ;D. I only had to change one bearing on my rebuild, the clutch lifter bearing as although still functioning well, sounded crunchy. Bearings don't usually need changing, unless broken like yours but if you do go that route, buy the best bearings you can, cheap ones are a false economy. I think a full bearing kit for our bikes is about £130.

I think I'll check the other bearings and hopefully they'll be ok. If so the £130 can go into my re-chroming pot. :) :) Thanks.

Dremel a slot in it and use a screwdriver to loosen it.

Think yourself lucky the pin went in and didn't crack the casings.

Good idea Mike. I think I would combine the two options at the same time, the slot with a bit of heat.
Have a bottle of beer at the ready to drink in celebration when the pin comes out  :).

Thanks all for your replies. Have taken a closer picture showing more detail.
Julie, thanks for pm. I think the bit you were talking about was a piece of the bearing shell.

The other one looks ok but I am surprised at how little the pin sticks out.
