Title: Non standard wheels on my 400/4
Post by: Gary 400/4 on May 31, 2018, 12:50:04 AM
Hello folks, I am at pains to try and obtain some information pertaining to the non standard 3 spoke cast mag wheels fitted to my 400/4 F1 model. This is the main reason I've joined the forum, in the hope to obtain some solid opinion.
I have trawled the net in the hope of  trying to find a picture. But alas without success. I find it hard to accept that no information isn't available. Given the fact the wheels were manufactured in volume, to justify the design and tooling costs, to make them.
They are standard size, and machined so as to carry the original front disc and rear drum components. I wouldn't say they were one offs for racing. They look quite customized. I can't post a picture of them with only 2000KB allowable file upload size, in the hope some one can shed some light as to what they are? There isn't any manufacturers casting codes or anything like a company logo. I am stumped. :-[

Thanks in earnest

If you first email or whatsapp the pictures to yourself, you should be able to upload them to here after, unfortunately from your description i can only say you have a pair of wheels, we are fresh out of clairvoyants at present ;D.

There are some tips for resizing images in the Newbies Start Here thread.

Didn’t CMA make 3 spoke wheels?

Steve, I know the Mocheck Harrier used CMA's but these were 5 spoke and painted white. I'm pretty sure you are correct though and they also made 3 spoke (so did Dymag but I think they would be very expensive to fit to a 400/4!). I seem to remember there was a chain of motorcycle shops in the late 70's called John Brown Wheels (JBW) who used to sell cast wheels for bikes and cars as well as tools, boots, helmets and leathers. I used to go to the shop in Thornton Heath, I remember buying a set of Hilka sockets in there, lasted a lifetime (until they were stolen from my garage!).

Gary,
Try Steve's resizing tips, they work.

These are posted as cma wheels.

The Dymags looked like this in early form,  not sure if original or copy.

It would appear that they are indeed CMA wheels. A quick search on Google images shows them fitted to a number of machines, mainly Kawasaki's:

Those blue ones in the Google search were mine.

I flogged them on years ago when I had to clear out the barn. In fact, that is my photo :)

Thankyou all, for your deliberations concerning cast wheels on a 400/4. I have hopefully mastered the skill of rezising a picture file for your perusal. Here goes my uplink, fingers crossed. I just need to know what they are. I am showing a not the rear wheel, the front is similar although carrying a disc.

Typo error, should read as posting the rear wheel and not the front. Not as written 'not the rear' it is that wheel on my bike.

The flared spokes would suggest CMA as the Dymags were straight.

Many thanks SteveD CB500F, for the insight into my wheels being CMA types, Where were they made? Also, do you know of any links to find out more about them?

Regards

Gary

I remember back in the 80's I fitted cast wheels on my four four from a Yamaha xs250 which had a drum at the back and the sprocket from an RD250 fitted and was the right number of teeth, I cant remember if the front wheel was of an RD250 or XS I had to get a few mm machined of of the disk diameter and it worked with the Honda spindle and brake, I think in those days it was for practicality rather than style.
