Afternoon Chaps :)
Chopper Harris here, about to commence the restoration of a 1977 400/4 I bought around 2 1/2 years ago.
26k miles, one previous owner, I have the MOTs and tax disks back to about 1982.
It is basically sound, I have enjoyed her for the past two summers, with littlle more than oil changes and a front caliper rebuild (of course !)
Totally original, the PO had fitted a new OEM front mudguard and a full 4-1.
The only real issue is a small rust patch where the rear fender has corroded through because of that ba**ard cable guide
I've been riding and restoring since the late '70's, with a particular love of MZ's and airhead Beemers.
I will be posing numerous questions, some dumb and hopefully some interesting ones.
Here she is,

Hi and welcome to the site,

Welcome to the site.
I was a newbie until recently,so I have a lot to catch up with the old hands on here.
Strange that the frame and pillion footpeg mount suggests the F2 model, but the tank and side panels suggest the F1 model, which plain paint instead of the pinstriped F2.
Just an observation.

There is much debate around the timeline of the F1 vs F2.
Some consider the original model, with pillion footpegs on the swing-arm to be the F.
The F1 had the pegs mounted on frame brackets, and the F2 has the new colours, locking filler cap etc.
I'm sure that the senior members will offer their words of wisdom :)

No words of wisdom from me, that would not be possible, just a Hi and welcome.
Cheers

Morning all...
This is what I meant by the CB400 F1.The tank and side panels are a plain colour and the pillion pegs are on the swinging arm.

And that this was the F2....shame about the handlebar grips eh??

Hi, welcome to the forum, nice bike you have there, I cann't offer mutch in the way of help or advice on the 400's (I have 500/4s and 550's) but I might tax you for ideas once I get round to working on the 2 airhead beemers that I have lurking in the shed..........
Cheers, Matt

Hi there - I've always thought the early ones (F1) had plain tanks & swingarm footpegs - later ones having pinstripes & pillion rests on the frame.
But hey - factory spec, so what... it just needs to be the 'bike that you want.
Yours looks pretty good now so good luck with the restoration & welcome.
