Can easily fit the head on my mill to skim it, how do I remove the dowel from the head, should it just pull out or is it shrunk in?

CB500/550 / Valve guide replacement help!
« on: February 22, 2018, 03:47:57 PM »
Need to replace 3 exhaust valve guides, set about this today but had a disaster. Warmed the head up till it was nice & hot & had had the new guides in the freezer overnight, made a drift which is probably where I made the big mistake as I made it to drive the new guide on the flange, needless to say broke the flange.
So before I attempt again a little wisdom would be appreciated. I have remade the drift so that it now sits on a small shoulder a little above the flange, hopefully you can see this in the photo's & should I be using any lubricant to help the guide in, if so what.

Thanks for the replies guys, another little query the ratchet can go on 2 ways, I presume it matters & I think I've got it on the correct way round but would like to be sure.

Thanks Conrad

Sorted, it was simply me not locating the circlip properly, was told I should hear a definite click when it located. Had another try & hay presto seems ok now, touch wood.

Bit of advice guys; I'm rebuilding the engine of my 500 four after a complete strip down & have a bit of a problem with the kickstart assembly. When I assemble the shaft & other bits into the case it's secured with a small (about 12mm) circlip which sits in a very shallow grove only .25mm deep. So I get it assembled the jiggle the shaft about a little at which point the circlip pops off & most of the bits spring off the shaft.
Am I missing something or is it just a crap design?

It's driving me nuts HELP please

Conrad

To expand your options look at imperial feelers as well, 2 & 3 thou are within 4 ten thousandths of your desired sizes, I doubt that you can set to that accuracy.

Does anyone have experience with the low temperature welding/soldering rods that are available?

Thanks in advance

Before you spend too much on a chain & lock, any half decent one will last about the same length of time against bolt croppers, grinder or gas axe. At the end of the day if some thieving scumbag wants to nick your pride & joy they will do, all you can do is buy time in the hope that they will give up & go somewhere else.

CB500/550 / Re: CB550 K3 engine oil - what to use.
« on: January 04, 2016, 12:41:48 PM »
I had a 550 K3 new in 1977 & at that time there was no such thing as motorcycle specific oil, you went to the local motor shop & bought whatever was available in the grade you wanted. So if it was good enough in the early days of the bike don’t see any problem doing the same now, just avoid the fully synthetic oils.
