CB750 / Fork Stanchion Studs - CB750 - 1970
« on: August 14, 2020, 03:04:08 PM »
I haven't done much on my CB750 of late to the point that even SWMBO has told me to get on with it. The forks need refurbishing, so I went onto the DS site and ordered some of the bits that I will need. When we got to the studs, the operator said that the 8X49 studs shown for my bike 92700-08049 (and several other models) have been replaced by 92900-080-320B, which is shown on the DS site as 'BOLT, STUD, 8X32 *L'. This is where I get told off by Trigger but 17mm seems a lot to lose or have I got it hopelessly wrong? I ordered them, as I have a sort of blind faith in Honda but I await their arrival with interest.

CB750 / Removal of 1970 - 1971 Steering Locks
« on: December 14, 2019, 03:34:07 PM »
In the continuing saga of my top yoke, I've received the set that I ordered on e-bay from the USA. I've checked it over and it seems to be okay but I may need to paint it, in which case the bottom yoke gets painted with it. The seller said that the yokes came from a K1 and mine is a March 1970, so I was surprised when I took the plastic cap off the steering lock to find that this one has a steel collar/sleeve, which my other (earlier?) lock does not. Here's the rub. I cannot get either lock out of the yoke. There must be a way, as Honda don't employ magicians to put them in. The original clearly has a pin, which defies all efforts to remove it. Does anyone know a 'trick'? The 'new' one doesn't seem to have anything that I can see to remove. The pictures will hopefully explain it better than I can.

CB750 / CB750 - 1970 - Top Yoke - The Evidence
« on: November 29, 2019, 05:41:07 PM »
If this works and with me at the helm, there's no guarantee, there should be three pictures of the dodgy top yoke. Blasting has cleaned of the paint but some of the putty used to hide the damage under a layer of paint, together with the roll pins, can still be seen. I bought the one Eric identified on E-Bay USA earlier today for about £200. Apparently, the seller is known on the US site and is okay, so I'm hopeful. There again the bike seller was 100% on e-bay but thankfully, I've never seen him on this forum. The one I bought is supposed to be from a 1971 bike, which would be a K1 but although it's definitely the same as mine, I thought that the K1 had the first if the metal clock cases, with a different/later top yoke. Anybody want to buy a stylish paperweight?

CB750 / CB750 - 1970 - Top Yoke - Advice Needed
« on: November 27, 2019, 04:51:25 PM »
I've said before that I was had over when I bought this bike on e-bay but now I've had more bad news. I decided to send the steering yokes off to FD in Gt Dunmow to be re-sprayed and Nick has just told me that when he blasted the old paint off, it was scrap. It's obviously been broken at some time and very well bodged to pass it on. The top yoke is held together with roll pins and my only comfort is that even Nick didn't spot it until the paint was off. Nick, who is not given to exaggerate said it's lethal. I know that they're like Dinosaur Dung, so what is the solution. Does anyone make replicas? If so I can't find them or do I have to fit a top yoke from another model? If so,which model? Any ideas? I wish that I'd bought the Harley!

CB750 / Classic Mechanics - Brighton Bike
« on: November 21, 2019, 04:54:13 PM »
As I was drifting around Sainsburys today, in the wake of SWMBO, I was startled to see the Brighton Bike in the magazine racks on the cover of Classic Mechanics. I don't usually buy mags these days, as I start to fall asleep before I reach the second paragraph but SOHC 750's and Commandos always seem to get my wallet out.  I haven't read the article yet, which is why I'm still awake but the bike does look very nice. Two things come to mind though. First, why didn't he take up the offer of the original carbs and even though I don't have a fetish for originality, I rather liked it's pre-auction dilapidated appearance?  I haven't been on the site for a few weeks, so this may be 'old hat' to all of you but I just feel that something is 'lost'.

CB750 / Front Fork Cir-Clips
« on: June 18, 2019, 02:42:23 PM »
Please work on the basis that you're dealing with an idiot and this will go better for all concerned. I have a March 1970 CB750 and have recently stripped the front forks, which had been assembled by an ape with a hammer. As a result, I need all the usual, including new oil seal cir-clips. The old ones, despite being recently rebuilt (sic) were paper thin with rust. I was lucky to get them out. I can’t find any on the DSS web-site, so I checked Yamiya. Problem: They show Honda originals at 50mm (also at 100 Yen each, which must be typo) and Yamiya aftermarket at 47mm and 2000 Yen a pair. The price isn’t really relevant and if possible I prefer OE. I want what is best and correct for the bike but Yamiya don’t usually screw up, so what’s best and why the difference?

CB750 / Painting Crankcases
« on: November 20, 2017, 03:04:52 PM »
This may not work! I have been on this site for two years and have not even managed to successfully send an e-mail to another member yet, so please bare with me. A couple of years ago, in a fit of madness, I broke my own rule and bought a 1970 CB750 on e-bay. I think that the vendor was well meaning but not talented. As a result, I have not been able to ride a bike I only bought for that purpose, so I have decided to strip the engine and with the help of a talented friend, re-build it. The cases appear to have been painted with a rattle can and need to be professionally cleaned and painted in the correct colour of engine paint. I live in Essex and am prepared to travel 150 miles or so if necessary.  I have been told that 'Ice Blasting' is the best way to have them cleaned and then I need a company that can provide a good quality finish in the correct standard and quality of paint. Does anyone know of companies that provide these services and is there any advice on the subject that may prove useful?
