CB350/400 / Compression testing with oil ?
« on: May 24, 2017, 09:39:19 PM »
I was trying to understand if lower compression on cyls 2 and 3 was down to valves or rings.

Measured cold and dry, 150 psi on 2 and 3 v 170 on the outer two.
When hot they all seem to measure around 150.

The other day I did a wet pressure test but was unsure how much (little) oil to add.
Ended up adding 2.5 cc of 10w40 using a syringe. Let it "soak" in for a few minutes then checked the readings again.
Bit of a shock when the readings were all up around 200 psi or more !
But this wasn't due to the improved ring sealing that the oil provided?.. instead I think this was down to the reduced volume in the combustion chamber.

My rough calculation suggests the chamber volume is about 12 cc but the added oil dropped this small volume by about 20% and this raised compression to maybe 12:1 or 13 :1.
So I would think maybe only 1cc or less is needed to be safe !
Even then the volume change is still going to affect the readings.

The oil was extracted from each cylinder using some rubber tubing and a vacuum cleaner.
10 minutes with the engine running before the air was clear.

CB350/400 / Gear lever circlip groove wear?
« on: May 20, 2017, 07:14:50 PM »
For the second time since the bike's rebuild the circlip parted company with the shaft today.
Just made it down a slip road in second luckily.
I may have used a non standard circlip burpt it looks like the groove in the shaft is a bit shallow?
Anyone here come up with a better way to retain the lever in this setup?

CB350/400 / Float valve refurb
« on: April 06, 2017, 08:44:42 AM »
After scratching my head for a bit over how to avoid spending a fortune on new OE carburettor float valve sets, I took a chance and got the dremel on the job !
The needle part of the valve fits neatly in the dremel collet chuck as the 4 corners slip into the 4 collet gaps. The needle then runs true. I set the dremel speed on its lowest setting (still fast though) and used 1200 wet or dry paper to gently polish out the slight ridge that had been worn into the cone which I suspected was causing the weaping valves. Then used some brasso on a clean cloth to restore the finish, again using low revs. Finally some brasso on a cotton bud to gently polish the brass valve seatings.
Quick polish of the four float tabs and re-assembled each carb. No leaks so far.

CB350/400 / Compression loss and rough running.... Saga
« on: June 21, 2016, 09:59:09 PM »
Many months (years?) of head scratching over my poor running but totally re-built motor may nearly be over ?
Lack of any real pull and bogs down under load.....just about gets to its MoT test.
Re-tracing events prior to this....
The head gasket got replaced again after removing the cover to retorque when some stripped threads in the head meant it had to come off for repair with inserts.
The second gasket was also genuine Honda and the retorque was done after an initial running.
Eveything else has been checked and re-checked over and over.....ignition, carbs balance and float height fine, tappets set, camchain tension ok... Nothing left to do.....but hard to start the thing  !
Once it is going and warmed up it idles quite steadily but revs up a bit like like a twin.... Kind of harsh and the exhaust note isn't right. Plug colour is ok though. No smoke either.
Did a cold compression check with carbs on and off with the same results....170 150 150 170 psi both times. Then did the check after warming up......150 150 150 150.
Counter intuitive I thought....compression worse when hot  on cyls 1 and 4 ??
I can only think the gasket is leaking between each pair of cylinders where the clamping pressure is weakest/ gasket narrowest?
When cold it seems that cylinders 2 and 3 under compression lose pressure to the outer cylinders which are on their inlet stroke....2 and 3 fire with 1, 4 compressing so no loss of pressure?
Is this right?... Assuming 1,3,4,2 firing order is right.

Maybe re torquing again will work, maybe not?
Probably a new gasket, seals.....££

CB350/400 / Down pipes - swap for sprocket "plate" anyone?
« on: September 25, 2014, 11:22:51 AM »

I acquired the no. 1 and no. 3 (clamped into collector) pipes from another member some time back.
They were well used ones that had been re-chromed overseas.
The pipes seem quite solid but in places the chrome is not great ie. small areas have blistered.
Now I have found NOS ones, these oldies are looking for a home.
I also have the single skinned DSS copies if anyone wants a nearly new pair of these ?

I am after the pressed steel ring for the rear sprocket - if anyone has one and wants some downpipes
please let me know !

CB350/400 / WANTED No3 header pipe
« on: July 13, 2014, 12:15:13 PM »
Does anyone have one of these (in a box, shed, loft) please?

Preferably not dented or holed...
So one that's fit for re-plating.

Thanks

CB350/400 / Coils power supply
« on: February 17, 2014, 11:29:43 PM »
Anyone else re-wired the power supply to the coils using a relay?
This appears to be a "popular" fix on Japanese bikes with aged wiring.

I did this mod to mine because the voltage at the coil fed from the kill switch was over 1.5 volts down despite new RH switchgear, cleaned/tightened connections etc.
I thought the lowerd voltage must be making cold starting more difficult.
Bike also has Dyna S ignition.

Not much work  - where to put the new relay was the challenge....under LH coil bracket.
Took a feed from the starter relay post to an inline fuse then to a 30A relay where the black/white wire is now used to switch the relay on and off.

The bike started much more easily than it ever had before.
Test ride will be on the next dry day!

CB350/400 / BSM exhaust anyone?
« on: September 18, 2013, 11:22:15 PM »
My 400/4 had an aftermarket BSM exhaust when I got it back in 2006.
I have got the bike back to standard spec including the exhaust system (once those downpipes are sorted).
The BSM pipe has been hanging around in my garage gathering dust ever since it was removed.
Funds are needed for other items so it's got to go.

It has buffed up very well and seems to be made from a grade of stainless steel as there is no sign of rust or pitting anywhere. Looks like it was designed for a long life and the welds are neater than Honda's OE.
If I intended to use my bike for commuting I would fit this pipe !

There are a couple of minor dinks in the silencer which hardly show.
The BSM people are still making these in Holland and they list this system as a 'Classic' style for 400 Euros or so.

If anyone would like it, please make a sensible offer. ;)

CB350/400 / Looking for header pipes 1 & 3
« on: September 18, 2013, 01:07:11 PM »
Probably a long shot.... But I am after a pair of these for re-chroming.

The pattern ones I have are not a good match and don't assemble well either.

Thought I would ask anyway, the ebay examples are mostly in the US.
