Misc / Open / How do you decide it's time to buy a new bike
« on: March 26, 2024, 10:12:30 PM »
For a long time I was contemplating selling my bikes due to struggling to ride them. But when I started riding again I was soon reminded how good they are for my mental wellbeing.I've never gone out looking for a bike. They have always been bought on a whim and they have always found me. But for some reason there's a fire burning within. I need another. I think I might be worried I'm missing out.

I've never set a budget they just have to be good value or fool me into thinking they are.

I'm incredibly indecisive
I don't have a budget in mind and struggle to part with what I own. But I would need to part with something as I can't justify another one

I'm not into cleaning bikes so they have to be tough enough to be left in crap and not dissolve

I really fancy a Suzuki GSX8R or a Guzzi Mondello at the moment. But there far too nice to leave in a state when I'm to busy to clean them.

I will inevitably just keep what I've got until that special something rears it's head

I think we have all been a little biased letts face it you can only recommend what you know. We have all missed the obvious question. What's your budget?
Also I know a couple that tour Europe on a cb500x and love it

That's a good point about seating position. Also it your vertically challenged like me the Hinckley Triumphs have incredibly long tanks and are a stretch to the bars.

The sprag clutch only fails if you regularly turn the bike over with a weak battery. My dad's 1200 trophy was fine with over 85k on the clock. I had one fail on the Aprilia after I neglected the battery. So I've learnt my lesson and never attempt to start a bike that's stood for awhile without giving it a quick top-up

Agree there should be no need for an additional filter if the fuel tap one is in place

I regularly place rattle cans in hot water when it's cold and have never had an issue. In the summer I have had them get to hot to touch when left in the van and they haven't popped. The same can't be said for tubes of gripfill I had three tubes decide to glue themselves and the shelves contents firmly in place

I've never known an inline filter not cause issues. So whenever I've bought a bike with one fitted they go straight in the bin if the tank is clean

I still have crittle windows at mine and a coal fire at my dad's
Are you saying ice on the inside isn't the norm anymore? ;D We never have hot water as the immersion heater never gets turned on. If you want to relive your youth your welcome to pop in for a brew on a frosty day.

Years ago my pegaso had an aluminium inline filter the sponge insert was pulled through the fuel hose about an inch one day when in the fast lane on the M11 causing fuel starvation

I would recommend any Hinckley Triumph the nine hundreds make more sense than the twelve hundreds almost as powerful and a fair bit lighter. Or even a Guzzi 1200 Brava,Sport or Norge all very cheap and capable bikes once there niggles are sorted. I have a lot of back issues and can't sit on the sofa for more than an hour but can ride the Guzzi all day 300+mile.

That's the last time I mention an Italian bike on the forum as I plan to dig out the 750 soon I hope. Even though anymore than 40 mile I want to get off it.

Been crazy busy and still a bad back but managed to use the guzzi at lest once a week at the moment

Ted I'm currently in the middle of renovating my uncles bungalow and he's in the process of replacing an almost new fitted in November baxi 400 heat only boiler for a combi. I can find out what he wants for it if you're interested?
I to live in a dorma bungalow and recently replaced an old crane caviller for a baxi 800 relocated to the loft. A modern combi takes up next to no room.
I think my crane boiler was funding Putin's war effort.

Just hope it lasts I've missed riding

The sun will be out soon and hope you can make it up to Lincolnshire one day  ;)

I will make it to Lincolnshire one day.
I went to work on the Guzzi Friday.62 miles each way rain, filtering through traffic and deep flooding on the way back.
My gear is still dripping and my backs on fire but sod it I'm doing it again Tuesday. Loved every second.

Spent today cleaning the mud and oil of the bike and making up a new rocker cover gasket, glueing plastic panels together and finding a crack in the exhaust Y section.
So all in all a good day for the Guzzi.  ;D
