Here we go, the old problem. Is it worth heating the screw head, WD40 etc, and would an impact driver have any effect?
Experiences gratefully received.

The Vessel Megadora ‘Impacta’ screw drivers are awesome. They combine an impact a function into a conventional form screwdriver. Well worth a look....

...and go steady. It's not impossible to crack the casings if you're heavy handed.

When you refit the cover, wipe a bit of copper grease on the threads and don't over tighten them. There's always some gorilla of a mechanic showing off his strength that over tightens screws. It isn't necessary.

A sharp rap with a hammer or an impact driver always works for me, I had a sturdy steel T bar made using the bit from the Honda toolkit which always worked.
Cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the smaller crosshead one ordinary and the big one JIS?

I've found a Neilsen impact driver for 5/16in bits, which should be handy, used very carefully.

Many thanks JamesH and others. GT85 spray and away for 3 days to let it soak in, found an unused Nielsen driver on eBay, bought long JIS bits, and hey presto! Wish I’d had one years ago. Great bit of kit for all kinds of things.
Many many many thanks.
PS after possibly 48 years unopened I’ll treat it to a gasket I think!
