Hi all. Has anyone tried the replica shock absorbers from silvers? I have a K2 with aftermarket shock absorbers which are too long. Although they seem fairly well sprung and damped the increase in rear ride height is causing some interesting high speed stability issues ! Would like to sort this out but not at the expense of a wallowy rear end.

The ones DSS sell are bloody expensive for what they are. Try a guy on ebay, goes by the name of 101 Turbogas. Fitted a few of his shocks with no complaints.

hey Wolf ... do you get front end tank slapper tendencies and what lenght are the rear shocks. Got some tank slapping tendencies with +48mm shocks masel

I will check out the ebay guy. Yes above 80 mph it starts to feel distinctly unstable. although dosent feel as though its going to develop into a full blown slapper it is a little disconcerting and quite tiring to ride. shock absorber length is 13.5 inches. I think standard ones are 13 ?.

I bought a set from silvers a while back 3 years or more,as for handling all I can say they are fine up to 70mph never gone any faster than that I am in no rush here.

.. standard rears are 315mm on the 500, Hagon do one that suits. Probs do one for 750 too

Before you condemn the existing shocks, do a thorough test on the swinging arm bushes and rear wheel bearings if you haven't already done so. Knackered swingarm bushes can also cause the symptoms you describe, and I don't think half an inch longer shocks would make that much difference.

Already checked bushes and bearings, seem to be ok. Is better with a passenger [lower ride height] so am thinking it is a geometry problem. sure i read somewhere 70s cb already had a short trail by the standards of the time.I am used to more modern bikes when a few mm of ride height will make quite a big difference to the steering.

... remember reading that trail varies acroos the 750 models. If I remember right its the later ones that have the shorter trail ... damned if I can remember where I read what the differences between models though ... but i'd agree that an extra half inch at the rear end doesn't seem that much . Could you borrow a standard set off someone first to see if it makes a diff ?

My memory could be wrong but i think when it was Girling making the shocks all the fours were listed as the same shock with different springs

Have managed to aquire a pair of dampers that dont look to have seen much use.
They have some very light pitting on the shrouds, is it possible to take them off for recroming?

How do they come off? Dont worry i will be careful, mate had a jaguar spring smash his jaw when a spring compressor failed.

Best to take them apart in a press. The damper rod will need hard chrome.

I am fairly certain that the damper rod will be fine, like i said the dampers look almost new, the only thing wrong with them visually is some very light pitting on the shrouds.

You have to pull the shroud down along with the spring then the retaining collet(s) will come out
