CB500/550 / Handlebar ID and swapping
« on: February 15, 2014, 10:24:27 AM »
Well hello there intrepid reader.  I'm pondering a stock or superbike handlebar for my 550K3.  But first, out of curiosity, I'm wondering if there's a name for handlebar I currently have, seen in the picture below.  It doesn't appear to be the stock version, but I guess it's not quite an apehanger either.

At any rate, I'd like to swap it for something a bit lower and flatter.  It's just the final nudge I need to pony up for new stainless brake lines anyway, and I always felt like the inside grip was in my lap anytime I had to take a slow corner.

Any chance you guys have a superbike bar you're looking to part with?  Or perhaps even just a stock 400/500/550 bar?

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Griff's Reality Motorworks

I just got my frame and various other bits back from powdercoating at Griff's Reality Motorworks in Bristol, everything looks superb.   They were very thorough with prep, removed head bearings, the swingarm grease fitting, and even tapped out the plastic bushings in the center stand for me.  Nick who runs the place is a nice guy too, real fun to chat with.  They also have a nice black color that makes a great match for our Hondas.

CB500/550 / Experience with engine paints
« on: January 24, 2014, 10:09:27 AM »
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to decide which engine paint to get, I'm aiming for a factory-like aluminum finish.  David Silver stocks this paint from Autotek: http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/generic-accessories/part_224169, has anyone tried this stuff?  What were your results?

I'm tempted by the Simoniz (Sperex) aluminum engine enamel, though I've read that it requires ambient temperature to be at least 20deg upon application.  Seeing as that weather won't be happening until July, if ever, I'm shying away.  Plus, there seems to be a fair amount of obfuscation regarding what temperature that paint is rated to, something that should be printed on the front of the can in my opinion.

Cheers dudes.

CB500/550 / Replacement gears for a 550. [mild gearbox gore]
« on: November 23, 2013, 12:29:48 PM »
Hey everyone,
Is there a good place to go for spare primary and countershaft gears?  I had a bit of a gearbox problem last October...

... Though the timing wasn't that bad, as I was planning on removing the engine for some paint work anyway.  Just means I get to learn how gearboxes work too.

Anyway, I had a look on David Silver, they only had one of the gears I'm after.  Is there any chance that one of you folks would have the following gears lying about that you wouldn't mind selling to me?  Here's what I'm after:

Primary 2nd/3rd gear (one unit)
Countershaft 2nd gear, 3rd gear.

I'm also looking for a countershaft bearing retaining clip (that thing that looks like half of a piston ring that fits in the groove on the big roller bearing that's on the right side of the image).

On a side note, I'm still not sure what caused the problem.  Going from 3rd-4th (or was it 4th-5th?), I  heard a sound that was very similar to what you hear when you don't quite get all the way into the next gear.  It's that rapid knocking noise, except much louder in my case, occurring irregularly, and continued as I braked to a stop.  The shift forks look fine, though I have yet to do any inspection beyond just furling my eyebrows as I look closely at them.  Has anyone had something similar happen?

New Member Introductions / Ahoy from Bristol

Hey everyone,
Just thought I'd introduce myself.  As I write this, I'm about knee-deep in a frame-up restoration of my 550K3.  Been using the big forum for a while, but have just discovered this one.  It's great to see there's such a UK following of Honda Fours.
