I am surprised that no one has done a reproduction of this as demand is high and supply is low,

I was thinking that Mick. It seems that demand is insufficient to warrant the investment.

That doesn’t stop a hobbyist though.

Anyone?

I was thinking of LPM when I wrote that.

I don’t imagine many tool trays fall off or get cracked though.

Speak to someone or a firm that does 3D printing, they'll reproduce it exactly. If a few on here fancy a new one or just one at all maybe a multi ordered attack might cover the cost? Maybe??

Ben Powell the 3-D print guru .. where are you?  ;D

Would need a CAD file though .. also not sure if it's too large for our printer at work.

Allen Kelly on here might have a suggestion, he has a printer but he's got his hands full with a back oporation at the minute :-\. He might be able to point you in the right direction, the stuff he does is awesome.

I brought my own 500K0 tool tray into work and Ben (Ben Powell.. member here)  confirms that our work  3-D printer is big enough, so he's going to attempt to come up with a CAD file and then have a go at printing one in ABS.. over to you then  Ben  ;D ;D

Thanks for bringing the part in Ash.

Good timing for this, I have just this morning had CAD software put back on my laptop, which means I can do some drawing at home again  ;D

I'll make a start on drawing it up tonight but don't have much time, but should have some free time over the weekend. Once I've created the CAD file I'll be able to have a go at printing it.

I've also just started looking at methods to improve the surface finish / strength of 3D printed parts to closer match the injection moulded smooth glossy finish (but only had a couple attempts so far).

I'll post updates on this thread

Ben, have you thought about an acetone vapour wash if its going to be printed in ABS?
Title: Re: Honda CB500 Four tool tray .
Post by: BenPowell on December 08, 2021, 06:38:23 PM
Yeah, I’ve tried the acetone vapour method, but only once so far on a small part for work. Bit of a test really just to see if it would work, so a lot of improvements to make. I think it would help to give the part a quick sand before vapour smoothing with it being thin I would worry about it loosing it’s shape if it’s in there too long.

This goes with the tool tray Ben .. so may be also worth considering printing.  :)

Hi everyone,

I had some time tonight and I have drawn up the tool tray, still some small details to add but the tricky bits are done.

I will print off some 1:1 scale drawings to check the angles match and the shape is correct, hard to get exact measurements with thin moulded parts as they distort slightly.

If anyone is seriously interested in one of these 3D printed can you let me know, I won't spend to much more time on it if not. I'll need to add the finished file into the 3D print software to find out material usage and time to print etc.

Some images of the CAD model so far

Top work Ben  :)  .. I hope there is a good response on here after all of your hard work!

May be worth sharing on the CB500 four F.B, group    https://www.facebook.com/groups/40322702454

The part no. you are recreating is 83501-323-020

Don't know if you have interest in copying it in detail, but know that 83501-323-020 originally had a small 'enclave' to accomodate spare fuses.

I will be adding it in, should only take a few minutes, got holes and some supports to add as well.

I possibly might although Im not sure until crimbo when I've the heap on the ramp and start to take it to bits. What sort of money will you be asking for one or are you not too sure yet?

Is that for your F model ...I don't think the F's had that part.

It didn't Ash as the funnel for the air filter box got in the way so they removed it. Run it without the funnel though and the tray should fit ok, it's certainly better there than where they fitted the tools after though. Never saw the need for the funnel myself, possibly something to do with reducing induction roar.

And of course the separate bit that holds the mesh over the oval cutout will also add to the work. 83502-323-000
The tray looks awkward to print as there are bits above and below the tray. Presume it will need support pieces. Took a look at it here and decided against it.

It will be a bit tricky without a doubt and certainly will need some support material, having said that I’ve done some awkward stuff for work so I’m willing to have a go at it. I have the separate part which holds the mesh on but will finalise it once I’ve got a tray printed, so I can make sure it is a good fit.

I think you would sell them but depends on cost, used onrs seem to go for over £50 in the US so probably £80 del in UK

£80 is a bit much for me as mine is good just not perfect. Can see how they would command £80 though

I sold a few earlier this year and some last year, good used OEM ones for about £35 for just the tray and about £45 with the separate bit that holds the mesh, with new mesh fitted. Yes, people will buy them but its a very, very limited market.

Post by: AshimotoK0 on December 14, 2021, 08:10:26 AM
I sold three of them a couple of years ago ..,, all £35 each but at the time DK were regularly listing them for typically£45

Listings of them are now few and far between though and this is all I can really find that sold recently.

Let's just see how Ben's stirling efforts pan out quality/ fitting wise and take it from there.

I'd quite likely be tempted  by one depending on price, seeing what people say about used prices for OEM ones is a bit of an eye opener, at least 2 of my rather beat up cheap project bikes have these. I'd be pretty tempted to use one on my cb550 in place of the standard top of the airbox, simply because I think the cb500/4 setup is more practical to live with.

Well the market must have changed in the last few years Julie 'cos the three I sold in succession (I got them in a job lot from Japan in nice condition) sold like the proverbial sh*t off a shovel .. all at £35  each ;D

DK and other importers tend to nick 'em along with grab rails to sell separately IMHO when they sell their 'barn find projects'

I designed this last year and had a few made, came out pretty well and a perfect fit.

I got the the tray drawn up in CAD so I have the file, but not had a go at printing yet.
