Just started looking at my rear swing arm/forks - the bearings appear to be some sort of plastic or nylon arrangement. Is this right & do I need to replace or convert to a brass arrangement if what I have found on the internet is right? Tried to search here but could not find a post on the subject though I guess it must have come up in the past.

I replaced mine with the set that nurse Julie sells, good quality and well worth the money

Original are a type of plastic and use a seperate "top hat" thrust washer. You can happily replace with brass ones.
BE CAREFULL the collar wears more than the bushes and costs a lot, last i saw were over £80

The very hard plastic ones are the originals Ted. If you are going to remove them, replace with the bronze Bushes. Report back here for tips on how to remove the old ones 😊

Not sure what you mean by a top hat washer - mine just had a sort of oil seal at each end?

The bush ought to be a tight fit in the swingarm, then a felt sealing washer, then a shaped phenolic piece where one bit goes into the swingarm with a bigger diameter that acts as a side thrust for the swingarm then a shaped steel cup washer. If the bushes pulled out easy they were either the wrong ones or badly fitted by a po, normally you have to destry them to get them out

When I looked at my swing arm I said to myself - oh no Ted not another end float problem.
The rear swing arm has definitely been out before by a PO as it all came apart far too easily & the grease nipple was too big & had snapped off - I managed to get the broken part out okay.
The parts manual just shows the bushes & an oil seal on each side - no cup washers etc. Hopefully NJ's Brass bushes might fix things up my seals looked in fair shape - tbh I would have preferred some decent copper spacers or thrust washers on either side arrangement. The flange part of the brass bush acts as the side thrust face for the swing arm.
I was quoting the assembly for the 500/550/750 and having had time to look at cmsnl the 400 pic is different with the thrust part of the bush, still should be a very tight fit in the arm though.
Freeze the bushes before fitting

Good timing - just stripping down the swing arm on the CJ360 which has the same bushes and the old plastic bu**ers don't want to come out easily!
Is there a technique to removing them - no worries about damaging them as they'll be replaced but don't want to damage the swingarm itself.

Hacksaw blade through the hole but you will probably have to cut twice at 180 degrees, wish i could weld steel like those plastic bushes get in the metal arm!

Seconded. I followed Oddjob/Bryanj advice and they basically pushed out. Iv’e used the brass bushes supplied by NJ and the end result is perfect. I got lucky though, the spindle was in perfect condition.

To remove swingarm bushings I take 3 washers that fit in the swingarm. I grind a flat on opposite sides of the washers so they will fit through the bushings. Drop them into the swingarm so they are laying on the inner edge of the bushing below. Then I use a metal rod to hammer out the bushing by pounding on the washers. Once you have the washers made it only takes a few hammer hits to drive out the bushings. It is way easier than cutting with a hacksaw blade.
You need three washers so they don't bend while you're beating on them.

Cut each bearing in one side carefully and they came out quite easily.
On to the next part that's fighting back - will start new thread for that!

Just fitted the Brass bushes in the swing arm they went in easily after 48 hours in the freezer.
Pushed in by hand until the last 3/8 " then light tap with rubber mallett whilst collar in place to keep it central.
The centre collar is a bit worn - not listed as available on DS site.

I think you can use a 500/750 one but they are about £80.
Put up a pic of yours and i will compare it to a new 500 one i have(sizes would be good too)

No, the original 500/750 was greased by a nipple at each end of the long bolt feeding greas direct to a scroll on the outer surface of the collar, later ones had only 1 nipple screwed into swing arm and you had to fill cross tube of swing arm with grease before it got to a radial groove on the collar.
Dimensionally the colkars were identical but visually very different and for some reason Honda obsoleted the later one

Having had some PM advice I've decided to see how it goes as the wear is very slight - re-asses when in situ.
