Hi all, just about to reassemble the rocker shafts on a engine that someone else stripped, I normally put the springs against the side with the wide flange on the rocker cover but this is different to how the part manual shows unless I’m reading it wrong?

Mine are definitely as Julie's photo, springs against the flange. Looks like a error in the parts manual.

Yes, the spring definitely butts up to the side with the flange. If you fit them the other side of the rocker, it pushes the tappet way to far over and the tappet only clips the very, very edge of the valve stem top, it causes damage to the valve and tappet and makes an almighty clattering noise when the engine is running.

No the parts manual is correct, it's just the way they have laid out the rocker shafts, it's not exactly drawn very well.
If you look at the nut which goes on the outside of the rocker cover, then the shaft, the next thing on would be the spring, then the rocker, then another rocker and finally spring. That's exactly like it is in the photo.

The parts manual is definitely wrong. It shows the springs in the same positions on both rocker shafts,but the photo shows the exhaust side springs are positioned differently to the inlet side.

The inlet rocker shafts start with the spring but the exhaust starts with the rocker whereas in the manual all shafts start with a spring, unless im reading it wrong :-\

You are correct, I was only looking at the inlet side, I presumed Honda would have done them the same but clearly not.
