CB500/550 / Regulator unit
« on: October 03, 2023, 05:45:12 PM »
My CB550f cooked its battery. Checked the voltage and stopped the engine when it got to 17v. Bought a new 4 wire reg/rec, exactly same as orig, still over volts. It seems what appears to be a reg/rec is only a rectifier, I've now found the regulator is separate.
David Silver show a combined unit (£70 odd + p+p )  and don't list that separate regulator.

Question is- is there a modern 5 wire reg/rec that will do the job ?, there are some on ebay for less than £20 which are the same as some outfits are selling for £40 plus. Or would that result in some wiring complications ?

Your advice will be welcome to decide which way forward.

CB500/550 / idle jet differences , 069's
« on: May 27, 2021, 06:21:21 PM »
Looking at carb kits for sale for the CB550f, there seems to be two types : an air screw that is solid paired with a long idle jet, then a hollow air screw with a side hole in it as well with a smaller bodied idle jet. My 1976 F1 has the solid air screw pairing and as I cannot get rid of the huge bogging down just above idle, I wonder if they are the right ones ?

I have done all the usual things - points/dwell, ignition timing, advancer OK, fuel level Ok and it idles well and reacts to air screw changes. It's not too bad after several miles and warmed up, but from cold it just won't play off idle without full choke but then, after clearing up and revving OK it ,obviously, goes way too rich.

The carbs have been stripped and cleaned ( they were OK as it happens ) but I seem to be missing something, probably obvious !

Any pointers very welcome.
Regards all, Terry.

CB500/550 / Master cylinder cap seal
« on: May 13, 2021, 05:11:32 PM »
Now I'm fully on the road, batting around has created small water splashes on the newly painted fuel tank. Thought nothing of it, wiped it off, it happened again even on these  dry days. Suspected fuel cap leak but it did'nt flash off like petrol. Finally realised it was brake fluid that has marked the new paint.
The nylon seal in the cap is breaking up with old age. Just tried CSML, 4  euro for the seal, 23.40 final price delivered !
Bo***ocks to that !
Are they available in the UK anyone ?,  not shown on David Silvers, just a new cap with no seal.

CB500/550 / Fuse board, 1976 550F1.
« on: May 04, 2021, 07:33:54 PM »
Still sorting the wiring, wired the ignition plug as the photo's I was sent , does'nt seem to like that, no side lights or clock bulbs. .  There is a diagram in the Haynes manual which shows a different layout, may have to (carefully) try that. In the meantime, checking for current flow raises the problem that it has a 5 way fuse board and all the diagrams I have found all show only a 3 way. Current, with all off, is live on 4th from the left. No such thing on my diagrams !
Is there a diagram showing the 5 way ?.
Regards all.

CB500/550 / Ignition switch wires
« on: May 02, 2021, 06:21:24 PM »
Hello all, my CB550f1  had wiring problems, almost finished now but there was no plug on the wires to the ignition switch, wires just pushed on the terminals and had fallen off !
Found a correct plug -
Can someone show me the wire layout for that 6 way plug ?
2 rows of three, one middle one missing
2 brown, brown/white, black and red.

Don't want to melt anything with a short !

Regards all, Terry.
