Thanks for the above, I shall stick with the good old mechanical regulator. Interesting note about 14.8v to charge AGM batteries.
My Optimate never really got it to the expected 12.7 / 13v limit but a charge on my ancient constant current charger at around 14.7v it came up to 12.9 and has stayed recovered.
You live and learn !

I re-set the gaps as stated in the Haynes manual (all I've got ).  Cold.  I tested it, made adjustments bit by bit and it now complies ( fairly well ) with the settings Haynes describe. Good enough for now, but I would like one of the combined units  said to replace the 2 items.
Not sure which one or if there are wiring issues.
At least I'm rolling again and not destroying another battery.
Thanks all....

Finally cottoned on that the regulator is mechanical.  Looked good inside but both settings were out, re-set and will run her up tomorrow.
Fingers crossed !

CB500/550 / Regulator unit

My CB550f cooked its battery. Checked the voltage and stopped the engine when it got to 17v. Bought a new 4 wire reg/rec, exactly same as orig, still over volts. It seems what appears to be a reg/rec is only a rectifier, I've now found the regulator is separate.
David Silver show a combined unit (£70 odd + p+p )  and don't list that separate regulator.

Question is- is there a modern 5 wire reg/rec that will do the job ?, there are some on ebay for less than £20 which are the same as some outfits are selling for £40 plus. Or would that result in some wiring complications ?

Your advice will be welcome to decide which way forward.

Regards all....

A couple of months ago I sent off 4 of my older Hondas'  V5c's to ensure they were still on the system and, hopefully, get them classed as Historic. There's still one outstanding, two I had to fill a form in to claim those they had apparently lost.
For one, I got a letter telling me it was lost, before I had reported it lost. There was a direct tel number on the letter. I rang it, and was asked where I got that number from !!!

Then, Friday, last week,  I bought another bike from Earnshaws in Huddersfield. The V5c with my details in turned up on Monday morning,  that's half a working day !   That's excellent service.

Looks to me they are geared best for  computers doing the work. Stuff that arrives in the post  (apparently 8000 items PER  DAY ) go " into the system ".

I don't think I'd enjoy working there.

Magnus, there must be a bit showing  through in the  choke area, like the photo,  as it is the air/fuel mixing chamber. To tell which way up, most of the emulsion tube holes should be towards  the lower end and the thick end of the needle should just fit in the jet at the top of the emulsion tube.
Hope that helps .

There's some lovely places to stop and eat in Lincolnshire, especially mid/northern, but I don't recognise that place nurse Julie , looks pretty good - can you reveal where ?,

There's also a loop back further West, Bardney Bends :      Horncastle -Bardney-Market Rasen-then 4 dull miles on the A46 before heading for Moortown and Howsham then before Brigg turn East back to Caistor.

Market Rasen to East Ravendale is a good old wrestle with a bike  on the B1203 but it ends up at the A18, best to turn around and go back down it again !

Enjoy while the roads are dry

Had a great ride on the Honda to a very warm and dry Cadwell Park today. No Limits track day on, fast boys doing laps around 1min 50secs.       Almost empty Caistor High street and NO artic tankers heading for Ming Ming for a change.
Excellent ride out.

Anorak's Corner / Re: Tap n die set recommendations

I now only buy HQSS taps and dies from The Tap-die Company in London. He will  ALWAYS insist you buy a full set, but as someone said earlier, just buy the ones you need. ( he does give in and sells you singles ! ).  Tap-die full sets are mighty expensive, but they're the best I've ever used. Cut stainless perfectly.
His website is worth a look for the info he has on it.
Regards from sunny Hull.

Perhaps he was referring to the seating face on the emulsion tube that must fit flush with the carb body inside the alloy turret, ie out of sight, underneath . I'm sure that needs to be a perfect seal .

Thomas, something to check while the carbs are in bits: mine was way over rich the full range, one of the things that seemed to make a massive difference was the seatings for the emulsion tubes. I was a bit slow spotting this , but a minute examination of the emulsion tube alloy turret showed that there was ally gunge on the seating face, also minutely on the brass seating face of the tube. (needle jet end ). It took a multi-facet milling cutter (6mm) turned carefully with fingers only, to clean the ally seats  up. Also, the turret had minor surface faults inside where the main jet O ring sat that needed carefully polishing out.
In addition, I felt that the main jets were not fully in despite being pressed to where they felt "right". I put a main jet in without its O ring and clocked the depth it sat. I found it needed a steady push to make the jets sit fully home. I'm certain that all the above  cured some fuel leakage past the seating face in the depths of the alloy turret.
Can't prove it, but I think its an essential thing to make sure is spot on.

I've sometimes got things going by placing a long clear tube over the bleed nipple and sucked on it whilst working the lever.
Worth a try, minimal cost.

So when a float punctures, or an air filter is clogged, the choke sticks on, dirt on a float needle , a main jet falls out etc etc, that gives blue smoke ?
Or maybe I'm colour blind !

My bike lent itself to fitting a Lambda sender as it is the 4into1 style exhaust with an aftermarket silencer - that fixes to the end of the 4into1 with an adaptor sleeve. I simply brazed  the sender boss into that sleeve.
I already had the Lambda system too, which helps, so I did'nt have to pay for a couple of dyno runs.
It's not a cheap or easy route to take, but if all else fails, it's a valuable extra tool to use, especially if you have other vehicles and can make more use of it in the future. I've used it on 4 different vehicles now, with good effect.
I'm not sure I'd have bought it just to sort the CB550.
Personal choice .
