CB350/400 / What is this off?
« on: October 04, 2020, 06:17:36 PM »
Hi,
Sorting through a few bits in the shed and came across this engine cover which came with a spare 400 engine I bought years ago.
Hadn't looked at it before but noticed that it only shows 5 gears and is a bit different to the 400 one on the real engine.
Any ideas what bike it belongs to?

Cheers,
Andy

About to seal up an engine and found my tube of Threebond 1194 has died so need to replace it quickly.
Had a quick look around and it seems that 1184 or 1215 are more 'common' so I wondered if anyone has experience / views on which is best - just for crankcase halves.

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / 400 next steps
« on: September 30, 2020, 01:01:08 PM »
Finally got the misbehaving 400 to stop dribbling and also got hold of a petrol tap to fit the replacement tank I found a while ago - the two key issues causing untold foul language and misery.
She was a basket case with many signs of long term bodgery so I decided to rebuild the engine and carbs and then see how (if) she ran well enough to spend more money and time on pretty stuff.
With numerous queries and tremendous help from many on this site she is now back 'together' and on her (flat) tyres.

Engine runs smoothly and on airless tyres with no brakes felt quite promising up and down the drive so I guess time for the next round of wallet-bashing.
Won't be going for anything like pristine finish, rather a complete, sound bike with largely original looks and a fair dollop of patina / ageing.
I've already got a DS repro seat to fit when 'safe' to do so and the DS silencer looks and sounds good so at least a coupe of big items covered.

Apologies in advance but I'll have another pile of questions but to start with...
Is there a reasonable blue paint aerosol so I can paint the side panels - currently awful condition purple from previous decor.

The brake pedal is bent and broken and I've seen lots on eBay as well as DS etc. - are the repro's OK and any better then others etc?

Andy

CB350/400 / Caliper
« on: September 12, 2020, 07:37:49 PM »
Hi,
Does anyone know if the Wemoto and DSS replacement brake caliper are the same item or different / better / worse etc.
Looking to replace the existing one and Wemoto is cheaper so wondered in there was a difference.

Andy

Seen a few threads on rebuilding wheels and think I might have a go as well.
I wondered what people do for the hubs - i.e. polish, paint, vapour blast or something else to get a good standard-ish finish that's reasonably durable?

Hi,
Any recommendations for zinc plating companies?
I've used a couple and not really happy so far so hoping there may be others worth a go.
I'd seen E Williams mentioned somewhere - maybe a magazine article I think - but any suggestions welcome.

CB350/400 / Finishes
« on: August 22, 2020, 10:28:01 AM »
Just getting various bits ready for refinishing and had a couple of bits I hope someone can confirm on...
What is the standard finish on the front brake arm
Are the wheel hubs painted or bare alloy
Is the rear brake plate painted or bare alloy
All the the ones I've got have been painted over time by previous owners so just checking which pile to stick these bits in - paint or vapour blasting etc.

Andy

Misc / Open / Glaze busting
« on: August 18, 2020, 08:50:05 AM »
Hi,
Just a general question on what people do in terms of glaze busting before fitting new rings.
I've used a 3-leg spring loaded contraption before which seemed to work OK but would appreciate any advice / ideas etc. as it's something I've never been totally happy with.

CB350/400 / Wheel bearings
« on: July 27, 2020, 02:24:52 PM »
Hi,
Looking to fit new bearings in the front and back wheels and see there is a special tool needed for each of them.
Is there a DIY workaround solution or is the only (sensible) solution another squeeze on the wallet?

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / silencer
« on: July 23, 2020, 08:17:06 PM »
Not sure if of use to anyone but DSS have got some of the 400 silencers back in stock.
I'd stuck a cheap universal one on while waiting for something better to turn up and had an email from them today so hopefully will come through and fit / look better than the current one.

SOHC Singles & Twins / CJ250T / CJ360T docs
« on: July 23, 2020, 07:01:31 PM »
Hi,
Probably not of interest to many but dropbox links below for the Parts Manual and also Setup Manual for the CJ250T and CJ360T if anyone wants to share or add these to the archives etc.
Scanned these in as I've now started restoration of two of these rare beauties.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/sgs4p159v8xehux/CJ250T%20Parts%20List.pdf?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fu8yvf270ta4sq0/CJ250t%20360t%20setup.pdf?dl=0

Hopefully I've done the links OK but let me know if not and I'll try again.

Cheers,
Andy

Ash,
Not sure if you saw the earlier messages I updated with the link for the Honda Common Tool manual - if not here it is again.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9hv1pipw9z3uzug/Honda%20Common%20Tools.pdf?dl=0
Please let me know if it works OK as I'm a total novice on dropbox stuff.

I was also going to scan in the other Tool Manual but this is a much larger manual and I wasn't sure if it is of interest as it looks a bit later - below is the page showing the bikes above 750cc it covers and this must be after 1983 as the CB1100F was only that year.
Let me know if you do still want this one as well.

« on: June 30, 2020, 10:40:52 AM »
Hi,
Just getting some parts ready for chroming and wondered if anyone has used Chromefix in Birmingham?
Sent an enquiry to a few chromers and they came back with a reasonable cost and timescale for some exhaust parts so am tempted to use them but just hoped someone may have experience of their service / quality etc.

I just tried to download the CJ250 workshop manual but the link didn't work - is it me doing something wrong or has the file moved please?

Hi,
Started stripping the CJ to assess condition and plan restoration of the handsome beast.
I just wondered if anyone had any experience of these bikes in terms of known issues, weaknesses or areas to check on the engine so I can make sure to go through these as I progress.
Cheers,
Andy
