CB350/400 / Wheel bearings
« on: July 27, 2020, 02:24:52 PM »
Hi,
Looking to fit new bearings in the front and back wheels and see there is a special tool needed for each of them.
Is there a DIY workaround solution or is the only (sensible) solution another squeeze on the wallet?

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / silencer
« on: July 23, 2020, 08:17:06 PM »
Not sure if of use to anyone but DSS have got some of the 400 silencers back in stock.
I'd stuck a cheap universal one on while waiting for something better to turn up and had an email from them today so hopefully will come through and fit / look better than the current one.
Cheers

Those bits look great - definitely worth the wait.
I think everyone is on long lead times at the moment - dropped off some forks at Philpotts and they estimate around 8 weeks, chrome guy is 3-4 months and painter is anything up to 4 months - all have been working throughout but just snowed under with other work alongside the bike stuff it seems.
Still, I guess it takes the pressure off the bits we have to do ourselves.

Andy

SOHC Singles & Twins / CJ250T / CJ360T docs

Hi,
Probably not of interest to many but dropbox links below for the Parts Manual and also Setup Manual for the CJ250T and CJ360T if anyone wants to share or add these to the archives etc.
Scanned these in as I've now started restoration of two of these rare beauties.

Hopefully I've done the links OK but let me know if not and I'll try again.

Cheers,
Andy

Ash,
Not sure if you saw the earlier messages I updated with the link for the Honda Common Tool manual - if not here it is again.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9hv1pipw9z3uzug/Honda%20Common%20Tools.pdf?dl=0
Please let me know if it works OK as I'm a total novice on dropbox stuff.

I was also going to scan in the other Tool Manual but this is a much larger manual and I wasn't sure if it is of interest as it looks a bit later - below is the page showing the bikes above 750cc it covers and this must be after 1983 as the CB1100F was only that year.
Let me know if you do still want this one as well.

Thanks guys,
Great to get some feedback on them.
I had a chat with them yesterday and sound fine so will probably get some stuff to them shortly.

Sounds like header pipes are fine, the only questionable item is a fairly pitted collector box which I think is basically a suck it and see job when they start polishing - if it goes too far before smoothing out it's scrap. I'll give that some thought but luckily do have spares if the worst happens.

Andy

Ash,
Just checking if the link for the tool manual worked OK?
Been a bit waylaid with boring work but will get on to the other tool manual SAP.

Misc / Open / Chrome

Hi,
Just getting some parts ready for chroming and wondered if anyone has used Chromefix in Birmingham?
Sent an enquiry to a few chromers and they came back with a reasonable cost and timescale for some exhaust parts so am tempted to use them but just hoped someone may have experience of their service / quality etc.

Ash,
Sorry it's taken a few days but have now scanned in the Common Tools manual - link below hopefully works.
Took a bit longer as the final page of the manual is a pull-out A3 sheet so had to wait until I popped into the office to use the big scanner there.
I'll scan the Honda Tools one next but its 180 odd pages so I'll need to do a bit at a time to avoid melting my home printer / scanner!

Andy

Good stuff, hope it's useful for someone.
I've got a pile of setup and other manuals that I've now finally sorted through to see what's there.
The attached list details them along with approximate number of pages.
If any are of interest I'm happy to try and scan them in - some are short and easy, some odd and larger ones may be more troublesome / not possible.
Cheers,
Andy

Ash,
Haven't been to the office to see if we've got Dropbox so set up a free basic version at home and hopefully the link below will lead to the setup manual.
Hope it works as I've no idea on Dropbox.

Thanks Bryan,
I'll pop the bowls off one last time and give the pivots a final check / clean then I think I'll try them on the bike and keep fingers crossed.

Andy

Had another play with the carbs on the bench today and tried the original valve seats / needles but these let pressure drop significantly quicker than the Keyster ones despite repeated cleaning and polishing etc.
One thing I did notice was that without the bottom bowl, the floats could occasionally stick open when turned over and then drop down with any movement. Nothing seems to be rubbing or catching and I think the spring thingy in the bottom bowl would also limit how far the floats can drop when fitted.
I plugged in the float height gauges I made up for the GS1000 a while ago to see if this could shed any light on the problem and they certainly help see what's happening.
Sure enough as soon as fuel is turned on the carbs fill and then overflow at a quick rate.
Turned the fuel off, gave the whole assembly a good shake and when turned back on the fuel level stayed at the right level.
Left them for an hour or so and no leaks.
Drained them and then turned fuel on and once again the levels go too high and overflow. And again, turning off the fuel and shaking them stops the leaking.
So it looks like for some reason the floats on initial filling don't shut off the supply but once they are 'encouraged' with a shake they work fine.
Floats and pins etc. all look fine and move very easily so I can't see any reason for this behaviour so may play a bit more on the bench before wrestling with the airbox etc. to put on the bike again.
Cheers,
Andy

Maybe the beginning of a fan club for the CJ after all.
I guess they aren't and haven't ever been fashionable or desirable but I kind of like the look of them and have some fond memories of a borrowed one saving a bike trip to Devon back in the eighties when a friend broke his brand new Superdream the day before we left.
Cheers,
Andy
