SOHC Singles & Twins / CJ workshop manual link

I just tried to download the CJ250 workshop manual but the link didn't work - is it me doing something wrong or has the file moved please?

Cheers all,
Agree they're not the least bit desirable but maybe that's a bit of the charm!

Only really got them as the 250's were just too cheap to ignore some years ago and the 360 came with the 400/4 which is still sitting on the naughty step while the ongoing carb flooding issue has seen us fall out badly.
I think they were just a misjudged design choice at the time and hard to imagine anyone at Honda bragging about being involved in bringing the CJ into the world.

My real love is the big 4 cylinder 4 strokes but I must say it is quite nice working on something smaller, simpler (and lighter) for a change.

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks guys,
Engine fully stripped this morning - had to wait for a castle nut tool to remove the centrifugal oil filter thingy.
So far looks promising but have now given everything an initial degrease / clean so I can have a close look at all the bits tomorrow.

You're both right about the oil filter - the centrifugal bit was pretty well solid gunk and the oil filter pretty messy, however there didn't seem to be any major damage evident from initial look (although may be different once I have a closer look at cleaned bits).

I've got two pretty well complete 250's, a spare 250 engine and a complete 360 so hoping to have enough good bits to get two full bikes up and running.
The 360 has a really good condition exhaust on it although the silencer is for the 250 - I'll probably use that on the 250 as a full restoration and the 360 as a decent runner with some universal silencer or other.

From the stripdown it seems the cam chain tensioner is different to the 400 with a simpler horseshoe mechanism - again all seemed in decent condition so far.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Started stripping the CJ to assess condition and plan restoration of the handsome beast.
I just wondered if anyone had any experience of these bikes in terms of known issues, weaknesses or areas to check on the engine so I can make sure to go through these as I progress.

CB350/400 / Re: Carbs overflow
« on: June 19, 2020, 06:14:47 PM »
Oddjob,
Interesting test - I've tried almost everything else with my carbs and they still leak like a sieve as soon as petrol is turned on.
As they're back on the bench I gave your idea a go and the pressure drops steadily with 'dry' float needles but as soon as I spray a little WD40 over them they seal and hold pressure.
This is with new DSS float valves fitted - tomorrow I'll put the old ones back in and see if they are any different.
What I can't understand is that the flow is so strong when the fuel is turned on that it seems hard to believe it's just leakage past the needle.
I did wonder if there was maybe something that held the floats down and I'll have a good look at this possibility as well.
Also when trawling t'interweb there are some comments on setting fuel height rather than float height and I wondered if this was an option on the 400. Certainly on the GS and GSX I've got that is the way they are set, using clear tubes from the drain plug. I did see some comments saying this could be done on the 400, set at around 3-4mm below the float bowl joint.
The saga continues

Andy

CB750 / Re: Setup manual

Thanks Ash,
It's just on my PC at the moment - about 17mb in size.
Is that too big to email somewhere?
Otherwise I think we probably have a dropbox account somewhere if better.

CB350/400 / Re: Petrol tank
« on: June 10, 2020, 11:53:20 AM »
Thanks Oddjob
Price was for both tanks and they are in surprisingly good condition - the photo makes it look like the 'back' tank is marked but that's just reflection.
They both have a couple of small dents and a few marks in the paint but do look original so I guess that's to be expected.
The guy wasn't sure if they'd ever been fitted to bikes as the insides are so clean - one is absolutely perfect inside, the other only very minor staining visible at the very bottom but not any rust so maybe he was right and minor damage is just from storage and handling.
The 'original' tank on my bike is shown below - strange damage to paintwork and rusty inside but pretty free of dents.
I hoped the new tank would save the bother of de-rusting and painting etc. and as the bike is not completely original and in 'aged' condition I think this will actually fit in better than a perfect painted tank.

They cost £250 - not sure if that’s good or not but tanks I’d seen on eBay generally looked in awful condition and quite pricey so hopefully a reasonable deal.

CB750 / Setup manual
« on: June 09, 2020, 07:45:22 PM »
Hi,
Been sorting through a pile of manuals etc. in the garage and scanned a few setup manuals in in case they are of any interest to anyone.
One is a CB750 - doesn't say what type but I think it's a SOHC early one with spoke wheels and 4-4 exhaust.
If it's of interest maybe someone can remind me how to upload / send it somewhere to add to the Cave.
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Re: Petrol Tap
« on: June 09, 2020, 07:38:01 PM »
Hi,
Still no luck with the petrol tap.
Neither DSS or Wemoto have 20mm taps or offer any solution.
So far all I can see is ones in the US (with attached high postage costs) or very cheap ones from 'odd' websites in far away lands.
Tempted to give one of the 'odd' sites a go - they have the right thread taps at just a few pounds so can probably get 8 or 9 taps for the same cost as 1 from the US.
No idea on quality but might have a shot and see.
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks again for quick response on the tank - really appreciated.
I'd spotted the ad on Gumtree and the guy had someone interested but hadn't come back so there was a bit of pressure to decide quickly.
All worked out well and collected them yesterday afternoon.
Turns out there are two tanks, both the same and appear original paint in sound condition with a few dinks and marks but both being amazingly clean inside.
The tank I've got is quite rusty inside, the cap is poor and the paint awful so I'm hoping to use one of these as an easy option.
Only shame is that neither one has a fuel tap. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Thanks Bryan
I spotted a tank for sale but the advert says 400 / 550 and i wasn't sure if they were compatible etc.
Is there an obvious way to see which one is which from photos or 'distinguishing marks' etc?
Cheers,
Andy
