CB350/400 / Re: Exhaust
« on: May 10, 2020, 11:41:27 AM »
Thanks,
I think DS and others haven't had the replica silencer in stock for some time - no idea if they plan to make more so guess maybe a few emails.
I'll have a look at the Dunstall one as it may be a good option at least in the short term
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Exhaust
« on: May 10, 2020, 09:37:04 AM »
Morning all,
Well, the 400 fired up (much to my surprise) pretty well first try so bit of a result there - even ran quite smoothly considering only basic setting up done so far.
Knackered old battery but booster I bought a couple of years ago works amazingly well to help it on starter etc.
Lots of cable ties and bodges to hold everything together where I had assembled the bike to see if she ran OK before spending any more money on prettier bits - she's had a really hard life so every single part of the bike has been bodged, damaged, worn out or replaced with non-standard bits.
As she now looks more promising I'll slowly strip back bits to tidy up again - hopefully the engine and frame can stay untouched during this so it's easier to play with.
One thing I'm struggling with is the silencer. The bike came with the original downpipes and collector all in pretty good nick but no silencer. For the trial run I bodged a rusty old silencer off one of the CJ's with tin foil, clamps and cable ties just to save annoying every neighbour in the area.
I really want an original look silencer but it seems noone has these in stock any more - does anyone know if these are being re-made anywhere or is it now just a choice between finding one on eBay or going for a universal style silencer?
Cheers,
Andy

Good spotting
The XT is a 250, the smaller GS is a 550, the grey one is a GSX1100EZ ( katanas ugly sister) and the red one is a CB1100f
The turbo was a real impulse buy - couldn’t resist it but no idea where to start with it!

Dave,
'Had' to build the garage a few years ago mainly because the sheds were too full of 'projects' and there was nowhere to keep the shiny finished ones.
Of course as soon as I got more space temptation took over so now the garage is also filling up - and the sheds are still packed!
Luckily have an understanding wife!

Thanks Dave,
You may well be right - I haven't put the carbs on at all yet, hoping to make sure they didn't leak before trying to.
Not sure how hard the 400 ones are to get on and off but with other bikes it's been one of the most awkward, annoying and sweary jobs so I hoped (probably hugely optimistically) to get away with doing it once.
I ordered the carb repair kits from DSS last night so will give new float valves a go for starters.
One thing I noticed was that the 4 float pins varied hugely in how springy they were so maybe have had a hard life and are a bit tired.
Cheers,
Andy

Oddjob,
I agree the FD is a lovely looking bike and can't wait to get stuck into restoring this one.
Bought it almost 10 years ago from the original owner who'd started replacing the fork seals in the late 80's, given up and left it in the garage ever since.
Pic attached shows her on arrival with just some front end bits missing (all in boxes), second pic shows her now having been pulled from her slumber in a slightly damp shed in my garden so more surface rust than when I bought her.
Paintwork is really good and I've got a new 4-2 exhaust (chrome not black sadly) to go on so hopefully can get her back to pretty original state.

Thanks again,
Had another go at the carbs this afternoon
Floats all float and evenly so I think they are OK
Bowls don't leak so guess the brass pipe is OK
Cleaned float valves again (shiniest part of the bike now!)
Checked float heights again
Put back on test and after a few seconds two carbs have a happy trickle from the overflows.
Turning the fuel supply off and then back on again the trickle doesn't reappear, only a drop forming on the overflow pipe.
I'm pretty sure it's worn float valves so I'll order up some replacements and see if that sorts it.
While waiting I might start on a CB900FD I finally hauled out of the shed on a sunny day last week - mind you it's a lot heavier than the 400, especially with seized brakes!!

Cheers,
Andy

Again thanks everyone
Plenty of things to check when I get away from work today.
I didn't know that the floats were hollow on these so will check them in water.
Also will clean the float valves again just to be sure and the brass pipe for leaks

If all else fails are there any good / bad recommendations on repair parts - eBay has quite a few offering from around the world varying enormously in cost and contents.
On the GS1000s the strong recommendation was never use anything except original due to quality issues - is that the same fro these bikes?

Will update after the next round

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks all
I tried tapping bowls but no effect
Took pins and floats off and checked all move freely
Checked the brass tubes and all seem fine
Suspect the float valve so will try swapping the fast leaking one to a different carb so hopefully will show if that’s the problem.

CB350/400 / Leaky carbs
« on: April 28, 2020, 05:25:52 PM »
Hi all,
I know it's a common issue the carbs leaking through the overflow and sure enough the poor old gal suffers this indignity as well after refurbing the carbs.
Everything cleaned and reassembled fine with new O rings etc.
Spent a few happy hours setting the float levels having read many topics on here - ended up using the method with carbs on side and very slightest pressure on the float pin.
First time on test she dribbled happily so took apart again and re-cleaned the float pins etc. and checked float levels again.
Put back on test and again 2 carbs started dripping straight away - 1 quite a constant flow, the other a slower drip.
I'm guessing this means the float pins / valve may need replacing so i wondered what opinions were on different replacements available (trying to keep spend down so cheaper the better!).
Any views welcome
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks both,
After much searching (and squinting) I found the faint numbers - time for a visit to Specsavers I guess!
Thanks again, hopefully can get carbs back on next.

Andy

Thanks Greg
The ones I have don’t have those numbers sadly,
Two are marked A76, the other two B76
Probably aftermarket ones
Difference looks minor but one pair are slightly offset at the engine face
Unless someone ‘recognises’ the markings I guess it might be trial and error time

CB350/400 / Two questions
« on: April 25, 2020, 07:05:16 AM »
Morning all
Two hopefully straightforward questions...
What is the length of the 4 carb overflow hoses?
There seem to be 2 different carb manifold rubbers but mine were in a box so I don’t know which goes where or the identifying difference etc - any clues?
Cheers

Ash,
You're absolutely right about the exhausts.
I haven't seen any replacement ones made anywhere (I guess exhaust manufacturers have their pride!) so original ones are very rare.
I've got one with a almost new silencer worth more than all 3 bikes together probably.
The other two have the most hideous bodge jobs - one has a standard silencer shortened and an end cap welded on, the other a badly fitted odd megaphone silencer!
Cheers,
Andy

In defence of the poor old CJ, I have quite fond memories of them - had a trip to Devon planned with some friends many many years ago and the day before leaving one of the guys stripped the sump plug on his virtually brand new superdream. The only bike he could borrow at short notice was a badly maintained CJ250t sitting outside a neighbours house. Admittedly it did slow down the journey quite dramatically and even had to be helped going up a couple of very steep roads in Devon but the CJ survived and saved the trip.
A few years ago I saw a couple of these going very cheap and for no good reason bought them so have 2 CJ250's in the shed (I think it collection cost than the bikes!)
Then when I got the 400f it came with a CJ360 so I've now got 3 of the much maligned beasts.
I admit they are a strange bike - kickstart only, very basic styling, 2 into 1 exhaust etc. - very marmite!
One good thing is that they share a lot of parts with the 400f so I have pinched various bits already off them.
One day I'll get at least one of them up and running again - just for old times sake!
Cheers,
Andy
PS back on topic I think the worst bike I had was a CD175 - first bike after a FS1E and came  form a friend's Dad - big topbox, square tyres, awful paintjob ...but cheap. Snapped the camchain the first time I gave it some throttle, almost killed me several times until I discovered rounded tyres that could actually lean and go around corners.
But I also loved the old thing as the first real bike of course
