Is the stuff on AES any good for this?

I've had a lot of luck using a slightly sharpened broom handle to bang into the fork leg and hold the internals tight enough to undo the allen bolt.
Always amazed it's worked and worst bit is the stinky old oil all over the handle afterwards

Barking mad
Just been for flu jabs and the High Street to the surgery was at a complete standstill due to the queue for a petrol station further down the road.
Took 30 minutes to move 800 yards

I think I'll start a rumour that 70's and 80's motorbikes are now impossible to buy due to #@%$, Covid and rider shortages - should see prices fly and queues forming to buy any pile of rusty crap with a  vague two-wheeled shape.

Update on the stand issue.
Laverda Dave very kindly came over with his really nice yellow 400 so we could compare the stand on mine with an original one and it does look like the stand lug has been re-welded.
Through the powdercoat it's hard to tell exactly what the repair / welding is like but everything seems sound and well done as far as can be seen, with the exception of the lug angle.
Really appreciate Dave's time and effort coming over so we could look at this - and great to have a good chat about bikes in general.

Think I'll just live with the rather upright bike for the time being while I crack on with other bits.

Andy

Update on the Wemoto bearings.
Had another play with the upper set - popped a couple of loose ball bearings in to see how it would build up if the caged bearings did fit properly.
The race seems correct and as original but the cone is quite different and when fitted the set is several mm higher than standard so not much use.

Shame as the bottom set seems perfect and the top would be if the cage fitted and the cone was the same profile as original.
I just wonder why someone has put together all these varieties of replacement bearing sets that just aren't correct.
Wemoto are looking into this so maybe the supplier can explain / correct things.

Andy

Ted,
Interesting - but sad that simply getting replacement bearings is such a pain!

I received the alternative style ones from Wemoto and have had a quick look at these.
The bottom set looks perfect and appears an exact match of the originals, with the exception of the ball bearings being captive.
Top set not so good - the race seems the same but the bearing cage just doesn't fit at all so can't check any further.
Also the top cone is thicker and has a different shape so this may also cause a problem in terms of overall thickness etc. but can't check as the bearings don't fit in.
I've spoken with Wemoto and they are going to look into it - maybe a rogue bearing set but hopefully will find out and update on 'progress'.

Measured up the old bearing and got 48.55 so same as your dimension.
Also measured the overall height of the top assembly and came out at around 14.3mm overall but with only a few BBs fitted - when I get a chance I'll re-check with all bearings in place to see if this is correct or changes much.

Cheers,
Andy

Steve,
I had problems with tapered head bearings on the 400 and also on the CJ250t (same bearings) where the upper bearing sits higher than the originals.
This was with both All Balls and tapered bearings from Wemoto and it seems to be a common issue.

On the CJ I had the original bearings and side by side could see the difference in height of the upper bearing.
I ended up filing off the ridges in the securing nut to gain a bit of thread but not really happy with it.

Now doing a CJ360T which again has the same bearings and I've ordered some bearings from Wemoto which look to be more like the originals but at a good price. These should arrive over the next few days so I can measure these up against originals and see if this my be a good option - or maybe someone else here has experience of this type?

Cheers,
Andy

Ash,
Of course - the more people can use it the better.
Not very good at Dropbox but hopefully the link below works - if not let me know and I'll try again.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mlp207csjvicq8n/CBX550.pdf?dl=0

Daz - hopefully Ash can add this to make it easily available. If not, or if easier for you I can email the file if you PM details - it's around 9.3m in size.

Hopefully all pages are clear enough - if anything isn't I have some duplicate fiches so may be able to get better scan of certain bits if needed.

Cheers,
Andy

No problem Daz - and nice looking bike.
I'll tidy up the scanned images and get back to you with the finished file.

Moorey,
Been a while but if you still need the parts list let me know.
Finally got around to tidying up the garage and spotted the fiche for the CBX where I'd left it out on the bench to scan
Apologies but I forgot all about this - have now scanned it in so can tidy up and transfer into a pdf file if it'll help.

Thanks for replies
Kelly - agreed I'd rather use better ones but the only spare CJ front end I've got has been fitted with 400 stanchions and ones I see for sale often look pretty poor.
I guess the CJ wasn't exactly a much loved or treasured bike back in the day.
I also remember the way we treated our bikes back in the 80's when money was tight so I'm never surprised or annoyed at what I find now when restoring bikes.

Bryan - those odds sound good to me! Even allowing for a lower chance with my inexperienced hands I think it's worth a go.
I'll clean up as best I can then give sealant a go with the new seals.
Could be this was what someone had done previously as well explaining the seals being so hard to get loose.

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks,
Had another go at them today determined to either get the seals out or launch the forks over the hedge!
Finally got them out but not without a real fight.
I think maybe they had been a pain previously and possibly some sealant or glue used to fix them in place as nothing would shift them and when I finally got them out they 'feel' a bit strange on the outside and didn't come out 'clean' at all.
Cleaned up the inside where the seals were and I think someone had used the screw approach previously but very hamfistedly or drilled down the edge of the seals as there are 3 'regular' gouges in one leg as photo.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The other one had only a single smaller gouge but I did cause some extra damage with a pry bar instead!
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Both fork tops have quite a bit of minor damage where I guess all manner of screwdrivers / pry bars have been used (including mine!).
Hopefully someone can advise if these are still useable - I'm hoping that maybe cleaning up the inner face and using sealant or filler may be good enough to work with new seals but this may just be wishful thinking.
Cheers,
Andy

Almost got the CJ360 completely stripped down and just wrestling with the final few bits.
Footrests for some reason proved really hard to get apart as the pivot pins just wouldn't shift.
On the CJ there's an insert over the pins and these two bits just wouldn't separate until letting the 10 tonne press loose on them - all now safely apart!

Hopefully the very last battle is getting the old fork oil seals out. Normally quite an easy job on every bike I've worked on but for some reason proving a nightmare so far.
Have soaked in penetrating oil, used heat gun, soaked again, used more aggressive heat but they simply don't want to budge.
Even bought a special fork oil seal removal tool but that is no better and starts to bend before anything moves.
The seals are starting to come apart so where the rubber is coming loose I can see the steel rim around the outer edge in one area so I guess there's a thin bit of rubber between this and the fork leg inner face.
I don't want to ruin the legs if avoidable so would welcome any cunning plans to get the seals out.

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks all,
Cut each bearing in one side carefully and they came out quite easily.
On to the next part that's fighting back - will start new thread for that!

Andy

Good timing - just stripping down the swing arm on the CJ360 which has the same bushes and the old plastic bu**ers don't want to come out easily!
Is there a technique to removing them - no worries about damaging them as they'll be replaced but don't want to damage the swingarm itself.
Cheers,
Andy
