Title: Circlip Pliers
Post by: Deano400 on December 10, 2020, 11:34:26 AM
Can any one recommend decent internal and external circlip pliers? They seem to range from about £3 to £125 with varying reviews from excellent to rubbish for the whole price range. Any advice would be welcome. TIA.

Most of mine are inherited from my dad so are 60+ years old (the type with re-grindable tips!) - theres various internal and external sizes.
However, bought a set wike these several years ago - obviously chinese - they are ideal for the tricky mastercylinder circlips. They have been excellent and show no signs of wear.

Unsure if these would be within price range for you

From a experinced tool shop,  Bahco are very durable for anything I've got of the brand with materials usually well up to intended use.

My experience which is limited is I wouldn’t by ones for £3.00. My first ones were draper, they were absolute shite! I would definitely spend a bit more to get descent ones. Sorry it’s a while since I bought but I now have Halfords Advanced. I’m not using that much but so far so good.

Apart from one Snapon pair that seem to have accidentally fallen into my toolbox back when I worked for a race team, I have several pairs of circlip pliers bought from Halfords such as right angled ones, all bought to do specific jobs as required. Never had a problem with them.

I bought a cheap set at a bike show a few years ago. They've been fine for occasional use but wouldn't last long if used every day.

I bought a Kamaza pair with various ends at a Sunday Market at Donnington about 30 years ago they have done everything I have asked of them. They were just under £10 back then pre e-bay prices.

Thanks All for your advice.
I would have liked the Bahco but for what I do I couldn't justify the spend. So I've gone with the Halfords Advanced.
Thanks again.

To be fair,  those Halfords advanced tools are very good quality and I'd forgotten about them until mentioned.

Kamasa,  as also mentioned, I've a set of open and ring spanners that have been continuously used over the years and still going strong.

One of my most useful buys has been the 1/4 drive Bahco socket set though,  goes up to 14mm and with it's "wonk" drive extension, gets into so many awkward places.

It's always nice to use things that just work well.

I have a small (think it's the smallest you can get) 1/4 drive Bahco socket set and the quality is very good.

I spent my working life using tools for a living, one of the best spanners in Europe were Germany, Stahlwille, some of their ring spanners were feather light, but with a lifetime guarantee, French Facom make of tools were as good as anything from the USA.

I love the Facom ratchet spanners and I've had many different makes over the years.

I have Stahlwille tools - used them at BAE Systems building Tornado - to be honest miles better quality than is required for the occasional use the average DIY mechanic like I am now

Gedore used to be a really good UK firm but i believe they sold out to Facom( Halfrauds own brand used to be made by Gedore very many years ago)

Facom is now owned by Black & Decker / Stanley tools.

But then so is Dewalt but many that would not buy B&D don't realise that!

And Bahco is owned by Snap On parent company.

And Britool is owned by Facom, or the other way round

That name takes me back a bit, bought some spanners and a socket set by Gedore from my mum's catalogue when I was 16 to work on my BSA A65, still have them now in my Imperial toolbox.

Cheers
