Title: Suggestions for tyres
Post by: ianjones2003 on August 30, 2008, 09:14:00 PM
Any suggestions out there for tyres for a 400f?  I need two for the bike I've just bought.  I was thinking of Dunlop K82.  Any views/experience?

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian, i use Dunlop tt100's on 1 of my 750's and Dunlop Gold Seals on my other 750, no problems in the dry or wet , got mine from www.vintagetyres.com they were offering free postage don't know if they still are, they should be ok for your 400, cheers Mick.

Hi Mick

I run TT100s on my Velocette Venom and am very happy with them.  I would have gone for them on the 400 but they don't seem to make them in the right sizes.  The K82s are the closest I could see.

I'm using Avon Roadrunners on my CB550.

I replaced the rear last year and it cost me

Roadrunners on both of my 500/4s too. They have modern (-ish) compound with an evocative 70's look and name.

I'd thought about Roadrunners but there is now a very limited range - see Avon website

It looks like they have been replaced by Roadriders which seem to have a good reputation but they don't look so "seventies".  This is less important to me than grip.  I guess any tyre made from modern rubber will be better than anything we had in the seventies.

I need to decide between Roadriders and the K82s before tomorrow so any more views are welcome.  Price is more or less similar - maybe

A 4.10X18 TT100 is the equivalent of a 3.50X18 K82 I have the 4.10 TT100 on the rear on my 400.

Let us know how you get on with them.

Are you fitting them yourself? (memories of the days when we weilded 12" tyre levers etc)

I'll do that.  I always fit my own tyres.  Patience and soap help.  I must admit that I don't repair tubes any more.  Age and wisdom (and enough money) says that a puncture means a new tube.  I remember in the (late) sixties and seventies repairing tubes time after time.  I think we are more conscious of how fine the line is between life and death as we get older.  The 400 hasn't run since 2002 according to the person I bought it off so it's getting new tubes and rim tapes as well as tyres.

Pledge furniture polish, works well and shines the rims up.
