as i thought, have you ever removed a broken bolt its about 4 mm in the hole, from my haines book it appears to be the locking nut so i cant adjust the tensioner untill i have loosened this bolt im just worried that ill end up with a larger problem i have been told that the bolt is real hard to get hold of and i can replace with an m6 bolt but its just the removing of it should i drill it ,will oil pour out im really not sure any advice would be great

You have loads of options for getting the snapped one out but dont try and drill it!, I replaced my old one with a new on from DSS. That bolt gets soaked with oil so I cant see it being seized

Don't drill it, I take it you mean the locking nut for the plunger and not the mounting bolts for the tensioner assembly, I would remove the assembly from the engine, makes it easier to work on, try and free the locking nut.

At worst replace the whole assembley

It's a bugger to remove with the engine in, but possible.

Just realised te link is to a CB750 one - proably not the same - my bad

Youre not going to want to hear this but the only safe way to do the job is take the engine out and split the crankcases

WHY OH WHY did i decide to go classic i should have stuck to the mordern jap stuff
i did try and get a pic of it but i just couldnt get a good focus on it with my camera the bolt that goes in this whole must go from a thicker thread down to a smaller thread because it looks like is has broke where it changes from the thicker to the smaller thread im just not sure what the bolt looks like when its out but is does look different from a normal straight one , if i do need to strip engine is it within my capabilites is it worth it as the engine is running sweet should i just wait until chain goes then do a full rebuild...............what a bloody nightmare

Ride it till the camchain rattles but fix it as soon as it rattles or you can do expensive damage

chin up mate

complete novice like me ( no bike experience ) all but done a top end rebuild, bit tricky but take your time and yes you can do it,

get a honda manual, can verify guys on here willing to help

no real special tools needed , gasket/oil seal set , might as well clean up while your there

so its a no no to try and drill it with a left hand drill bit and maybe try and unsrcew it by tapping with a punch or the drill bit might even undo it I'm just paranoid now that theres a slight chain noise there or do these engines sound like that its only slight but definitely there if i did get it out i could replace with a 6mm stainless bolt, whats the worst that could happen ........thanks chaps for all your advice its just a learning curb should i try or not can we have a vote...............

Worst case is you end up needing to pull engine and replace cases,

Next worse pull engine to helicoil or timesert the thread

If you work for Hartleys it works

is it a hard job to split the crank cases if i turn engine upside down ,drained of oil and take the bottom off will everything stay in place or will i end up with a hand full of cogs and bearings i think it is safer to do this as apposed to drilling then i can sort it out properly .

Long time since i done a 400, I THINK you can turn the engine upside down and remove the lower case, but not 100$ sure

Good luck with the upside down engine approach a new bolt looks like the one in the photo it has two different thread sizes.
