Only way to tell is to compare the stamped number on the headstock on the opposite side (which is the unique Honda font and should match).

Im comparing it to the vin plate on mine which has the vin printed in silver same as the rest of the text.... This one looks like the original number has been obliterated and re-stamped and filed smooth....?

I didn’t realise there was a stamped number on the other side of the headstock on the us bikes. Better go out and check mine  :o

The numbers relate to K3 not K2 ;)

Font looks OK, just a lot of cable rubbing ;D

I don't think that cardboard exhaust will last very long.

Early K3 could have been built in late 72 and that does say 10/72 so add on shipping time and it would be for sale in 73

Looking again I think the VIN plate is just worn / cable damaged, not tampered with..

looks fine to me, if it was nearer I would be very interested.  Wouldn't take much to get going and would make a nice hack.

Quick look at this again - don't think that's the original cylinder head on there (seems to have the wrong fin reinforcement detail)...

I was just comparing the vin plate to the one on my us model James.... the number on mine is not stamped, just printed like the rest of the plate, the headstock is stamped on the other side as you said... fortunately it matches too  :)

The plate on the ebay bike looks to be stamped although the font looks correct. Did Honda supply two styles of vin plate, printed ones and stamped ones?... Ive no experience of comparing us and uk models mine is the first sohc I’ve owned in 30 odd years and i cant remember what my old 550 had

Yes the VIN style varies over the years. Some are stamped, some printed. Have attached a photo of a K2 VIN from one of my old K2's. The layout / style is identical to the eBay bike so I'm confident it's correct. The earlier K0/1 bikes have a subtly different style/layout and I suspect some of the later bikes do too..

Ive been out in the garage this afty so had chance to dig out the cb and have a good look at the vin... On close inspection the vin number is actually embossed (raised up) and also printed over the top in ink. So when the cables have rubbed on it they have removed the paint on the top of the figures and let the bare aluminium show through making it look to have been stamped... so looks like you were right to think it was ok 👍
