Title: Is this a stupid question ?
Post by: Frankie 2 sheds on January 29, 2018, 03:25:36 PM
Just completing the engine re-build on a cb750. The plan is to make the bike as naked as possible. With that in mind I want to get rid of the oil tank. Here's the stupid question....If I re- direct the flow of oil to the top of the engine and have a wet sump, what's the issues? (I did say it was a stupid question).......Frank

The sump is not a sump as such, it is not deep enough to hold the amount of oil that the engine requires. You will have to fit this, not cheap >>>http://www.outsidersmotorcycles.com/product/sumpthing/?v=796834e7a283
Also the oil does go to the head  ;)

You would need a different oil pump, the standard on is fed by gravity from the tank, it only scavenges theexisting sump to return it to the tank. Really wouldn't recommend your plan!

I don't fancy filling the engine up through the tappet cover  ???
Surly it will take ages?

Oil in frame like old Brit stuff? Not actually in the original frame tubes but a separate one.
If you are using a standard tank it would be more difficult to hide a tube - or perhaps you could put a compartment in the rear of a standard tank.  There must be a way!

Vincent oil tank design as part of a frame mod?

[attachimg=1]

My CBX 750 Honda uses the frame rails to get to and from the front mounted oil cooler.

That Vincent idea looks very interesting K2 as the cb frame lends itself to that I believe. I'll investigate further... Thank you.....Frank

Triumph and BSA Oil-In-Frames used the top frame tube as the oil tank

A mate converted a Featherbed frame to this type of construction for a Vincent engine by welding in a large tube at the top of the frame like an Egli frame.

Here is an Egli CB750

A large diameter could be welded in place of the original tube of the Honda frame. I would always consider this mod over an engine mod to make it wet sump.

The oil in frame T140, pictured above, was literally that, as Triumph used an old 650 tappet cover with a dipstick attached. Oh the fun I had tring to get it in the frame and not all over it, particularly at 250 miles to the pint.

When the frame cracked around the swinging arm pivot, as a result of riding it flat out on the motorway chasing a Suzuki T500, the oil made a spectacular bid for freedom. That frame is still in a friend's Mum's attic, there is no truth in the rumour that I claimed on the insurance for a missing bike.  ;)

I have a Honda 650 Vigor (Dominator ish). Like many XL/ XR's oil in front frame tube.

You just reminded me my Aprilia is oil in the front frame tube as well. You fill it up between the headstock and tank any faster then a dribble it goes over the tank and radiator. If your really messy the exhaust and front tyre as well.
