Title: Checking Stator

Hi guys.. can anyone help me with how to check my stator is working.

I've hooked up the new reg/rect and I'm getting about 12.75 up to 13v with a few revs so no where near enough.

Is there a way to check the yellow wires.. are making a current as its seems I'm down a little.. many thanks!

Hi,
      Get a multi meter and check the yellow wires individually to ground, there should be no continuity.
Also check the yellow wires to each other in pairs.
I do have a guide to all this somewhere I will see if I can find it out.

Thanks Paul, most helpful I will print these out.. without sounding useless how do you use the multimeter to test the yellow stator wires for resistance?

Just a thought I'm running 3 ohm coils.. with the increased resistance could this affect my charge rate?  I plan to fit Dyna k ignition but assumed it would be ok.

It is rare for the stator of field coil to fail electrically, only through physical damage. most common cause of undercharge is corroded connectors

Thanks guys.. it was working before, suspect must be a dodgy connection but want to run through the system.

So with the meter on ohms to do a continuity test I pop one lead on the yellow stator and then the other on a field coil wire.. is that correct. I apologise if a stupid question I am leaning each problem.

Nope, one wire on a yellow wire and the other on the casing to check insulation then there are 3 "pairs" of yellow wires and you check across each pair. For the field check between the wires and also either wire to casing

V.   Testing the stator yellow leads. 
A.   Test wires 1 and 2, 1 and 3, 3 and 2 for ohm readings.  Less than 1 ohm means the circuit is good.  Greater than 1 ohm means poor connection.  Infinite resistance means that the coil has an open circuit or possibly a bad lead. 
B.   NOTE.  For GL1000 you need to disconnect/remove the permanent magnet rotor before continuing.  Set tester to insulation resistance and calibrate it to 0 to perform a wire insulation test on the stator.  Ground the negative test lead and touch the other lead to each of the three stator wires.  If the resistance is infinite then the coil is ok.  If not then the coil is shorted to ground. 
C.   Test the three stator wires in the harness of the motorcycle.  First disconnect the rectifier.  Set the tester to resistance.  0 resistance means all three wires are fine.  Greater than 0 means the wire is bad. 
D.   Check the wires for bad insulation.  Connect the black tester lead to ground.  Each wire should have infinite resistance.  Greater than infinite resistance means the wire has bad insulation.
