Title: CR750 Paint
Post by: philward on April 07, 2018, 05:32:05 PM
I'm just sorting the paint for my CR Rep and if my order this paint - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorradlack-Motorrad-Lack-YR-1-C-Candy-Topaz-Orange-375-ml-Honda-CL-350-K/292374177089?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 -
Will this kit give the stock standard candy finish (if my painter puts a clear lacquer on the top?
I know I would need two of these kits due to the fairing. As the ebay listing is in German, I can't seen to describe whats in the kit to my paint guy. He sprayed my K2 in Planet Blue - just give him the RS Paint kit last time but they are twice the price of the above.
Thanks
Phil

Don't know what finish will be like but the translation is
"Honda motorcycle spray paint set consisting of the pre-paint and the glaze paint". Comes with hardener which is split between the 'pre-paint' (primer?) (ratio 15-1) and the 'glaze paint' (colour?) (ratio 5-1). Don't know if this will help with your paint guy. Hopefully.

Looks great Phil, it’s going to be a fine machine when finished, I’ll get back to work on mine soon, I’m waiting for my 944 to vacate the garage (given it to my cousin, he’s a car fanatic and will do a great job of completing it whereas I’ve completely lost interest in cars), think I’ll take the fairing off mine and fit a headlamp, sort of race inspired cafe racer for this year then fit the four pipes and paint scheme same as yours for next year, do you mind me asking how much your painter changed?

Post by: philward on May 20, 2018, 09:58:38 AM
Not sure how much yet Mark. He's letting me know tomorrow as he had to do extra work painting the stripes and number plates on the fairing as the decals didn't match the fairing - and the all tank was ' slightly distorted' on the sides and he had to lightly fill it (the decals are made for your Meadspeed fairing). I will let you know when he tells me the price. I had a mint 944 Turbo SE until 2012 (sold it as only done 4000 miles in 11 years) - prices have tripled since! (For the Turbo SE)

Yes, 944’s are climbing, mine is a 1983 8v, no sunroof, no power steering, the purists one 🙂, I had it on the road for years but it began to look tatty so started to restore it 8 year’s ago, did all the brakes , cam belts etc and was prepping for paint when I got back into my first love, bikes!, it has sat neglected in the garage ever since, but I’ve never had the heart to sell it, as it would probably get stripped for parts, however I’ll never get back into cars so it’s just in the way, then it came to me, my cousin is still a car nut and he had helped me financially during a divorce 15 years ago, always refusing repayment, so it’s the ideal solution, the car gets restored, it stays in the family, and I get to feel I’ve repaid him and get my garage back!, everyone’s a winner.

Not ready for start up yet Roy - just a few weeks away. Still sorting lots of sub harness's around digital speedo/rev counter/etc to ensure reliability around the 'birdsnest' of wires by headstock. Have just blanked crank oil hole (where starter gear was) so should be able to try and get oil pressure up next). Need to sort a variety of jets and make some baffles. So I anticipate a few months really (and misus is on my case to start the fitted wardrobes I've been saying I'd start since January!)

Splendid bike and excellent workmanship. I visited Phil last year i.e. before the paintwork and fairing were done and fitted, but the first impression of Phil's CR was how the small details looked 'spot on' and everything had not only been well planned out, but executed to a really high standard......despite some serious 'head scratching' along the journey.

Another great example of the skills and dedication of sohc Forum Members......and one of the many reasons why this Forum is so good.

Well done Phil......I salute you.

P.S. his stock CB750 is rather tasty as well !

You’ll be surprised Phil, it won’t be as uncomfortable as you think, I have the exact same seat unit on mine, because you are leaning forward a lot of the weight is taken on your inner thighs, I can do at least 60 miles in one stint without discomfort, then a coffee stop then out again for more fun, it will handle better than you think as well due to the weight loss, I wonder how much lighter they are?, just the standard Honda rear mudguard and light unit weighs about 1 metric tonne! :)

Been a little quiet on the forum due to DIY, new grandaughter and finishing the CR - but fired the CR up Thursday night on the 6th kick! Which is amazing based on its on standard settings and full advance on the Boyer ignition. (don't want to set the ignition at 4000 rpm as per Boyer instructions until loosened of a bit - Triggers advice taken!). So pleased with engine response as per video. Just bits to do then MOT for registration.
Hopefully the Youtube link thingy works OK

Thanks guys - I am chuffed. I just need to cure a petrol leak from the replica petrol tap (from behind the lever seal), engine.oil tank breathers/catch tanks and then MOT for registration - then might get a few miles on the clock this summer.
Just not happy with left hand side of fairing that is pushed out further than I wanted due to the narrower race alternator (the fairing is made for a total loss type left hand cover) but when building a race replica to be used on the road, there will always be compromise.
I am particularly pleased withe exhaust note with the modified K0 end baffles which just knock the edge off the noise but retain the tone (I think)
Need to fit a most discreet usable mirror as well.

Already got that sorted Roy - my wife will follow me in the car with a sponge crash mat - when I stop, she will position the sponge to the left of the bike, I will put it on the side stand, lift my right leg..... then roll off the bike onto the sponge! Havn't planned the getting up off the floor yet though!

Absolutely brilliant Phil, and the best bit to come, the ride!, apart from a bit of top heaviness pulling out of junctions you’ll be amazed how nicely it handles, mainly down to the weight loss, brilliantly executed job :)
PS I think the top heaviness is due to the clip ons, less leverage.

Now registered (thanks for help James) and insured. Just needs revcounter re-calbrating to Boyer ignition signal (Smiths building me one free of charge as stock electronic unit reads double revs - great service), replica CR petrol tap back with Paul McGhie to stop leak (got a CR250 motocross on at the moment) and final set up of the carburation over the next few weeks.
Going to have a break from building bikes for a few months as I am suffering from a fracture at the moment (My wallet!)
Thanks to everyone who has given me help and advice on this build - the hardest I'm done so far!

What a fantastic looking bike. To quote Boyd Coddington of American Hotrod fame 'It's bitchin'  :).
My theory of 'investing' is why would I give my money to a bank to get rich off my back when I can buy and ride the motorcycles I always wanted but could never afford when I was younger. Keep investing in two wheels  ;).

Title: Re: CR750 Paint
Post by: philward on August 28, 2018, 09:20:59 PM
Actually just back in after a 25 mile round trip to a local bike meet Mark. Its on full advance as per initial Boyer set up instructions as rev counter not back yet (as per previous post) as needs to be timed at 4000 rpm - so accelerates quite cleanly but towards end of the ride was popping at low revs/tickover on over run. Need to check the plugs for colour tomorrow. Also need to stick a bit more heat proof barrier on the fairing sides as its getting hotter than I would like. Otherwise, suprisingly little to adjust.
Handles better than I expected - front end miles more solid than my standard K2 (just on second hand progressive springs)
Biggest problem was my full face helmet - had to push my head constantly up to avoid looking at the top lip of the face aperture!

They do ride surprisingly well, can only be the weight loss and firmer suspension I guess,  you’ll find it’s limitations on bumpy corners as obviously the suspension is primitive compared to modern bikes, simple fix though, avoid bumpy corners! but I was amazed how planted mine feels on reasonable road surfaces
You and I both on the crackling and popping on overrun, mines gotten really bad of late, I’ve checked for air leaks on the inlet rubbers, they seem fine, I’ll have the carbs off this week and check the primary circuits are clear, after that it’s maybe my 40 year old Piranaha unit or maybe exhaust valves?, anyway I need to give it a dose of looking at.
PS are you fed up with having to answer the “did you build it yourself mate?” question yet? :)
PPS if you don’t want to shell out for a new helmet you could always have you eyes lowered!

Could well be worth fitting, basically as far as I can tell the damping just gets overwhelmed over a series of small bumps at speed, had a hairy moment at the TT when I came into a bend a bit fast (it was a tighter bend than it initially looked) and basically I just bounced around it, got very close to the kerb but got away with it (more luck than judgement), tbh I don’t usually ride mine very quickly it’s more show than go!.
Title: Re: CR750 Paint
Post by: MarkCR750 on August 31, 2018, 01:30:49 PM
Well I set today aside to fix the crackling/popping, took it for a ride to remind myself of how bad it was and guess what it’s running fine, no idea why but not arguing!, I’m going to the Norton burn out on it tomorrow at the Norton factory so no doubt it’ll start playing up again on the way there!, does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue is/could have been?
PS took this out for a test ride yesterday, great handling, brakes but just not quite impressive enough on power to warrant the 25k in my opinion (and I haven’t got 25k to burn of course), it’s unbelievably loud with those open megas, like setting car alarms off loud![attachimg=1]
