I recently got a lovely genuine 9000 mile F1 engine, 4 years ago i bought the whole bike minus engine , the guy bought the bike for the engine then sold me the rest , anyway having never used the engine he contacted me and asked if i was interested in buying the engine
So i have a lovely 1976 9000 mile f1 in bits , i
Iifted the rocker cover and it's immaculate so clean, I decided as I have about 10 engines to do I might as well build a portable test rig
I have lashed together a functionable rig and will give my engine a test
Its not finished yet and it will have fan cooling and temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge, it uses a full set of electrics so I can test every thing from alternator to switch gear check the loom , regulator and rectifier etc
Also I can dial in the carbs get them spot on
when I am done I will have an attempt at painting the engine in one piece then on too the next engine(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171221/e5a09ec55edfed704f91055887e39270.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171221/dc14e142c8d0b4e57c742c9bd7359720.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171221/e4968100580465c7f2c27b195044b7eb.jpg)

A man after my own heart Pete..That's what I want to do for my CB250/350K engines. I don't think everyone will agree with us though, as I found here in this post :-

Not got a single word to say on the subject. ;)

Did that once on a VW beetle engine and gearbox in the back garden.
Neighbours were not impressed. ;)

Me personally I think it's a great idea,I don't know this engine so I want to know it' runs ok before going to all the hassle of painting it and fitting it
So it makes sense to me.
Realistically the first thing you do when you fit an engine in a bike is to get it all running and set up before you ride it which means reving it up doing timing with a strobe light, sync carbs check for leaks etc
I personally don't understand the arguments against

How would you know it was good by running it for a while ?
The pistons in the pictures came out of a bike that one of my customer had bought from a well known importer and breakers . Described as a low mileage bike (2,420) which I can say is correct by the condition of the internals and ran sweet as a nut for the first year (700 miles), with good compression until number 1 cylinder started to lose compression due to it had been sitting about for 40 plus years. The compression was good until the rust burnt off ;)

Well I had some spare time so I got it all plumbed in , spun it over with rocker cover off to make sure oil was circulating then fired it up , oh wow it's a nice engine will need carbs tuning as it's lumpy on tick over, but a total success on my engine tester, so plan is to tune it all up get it running sweet then paint it so it's ready for installation

Very good Pete, I love a bit of a Heath Robinson inventing.
