CB500/550 / Re: Carbs jet size?
« on: March 11, 2017, 07:08:37 PM »
You need to sort the clutch BEFORE attempting jetting changes, as you can spend many hours getting thwe jetting to seem perfect, and as soon as the clutch slip is sorted you could end up with a big flat spot. Did you fit new clutch plates? If not, that would be a wise thing to do, but before that, check the clutch pushrod is not bent or broken, either of those can give rise to random clutch slip.

Hello! I have almost changed everything in the clutch already but the discs, they look perfect to me... what else could be causing the gears to slip? Push rod is in perfect condition, changed the clutch mechanism, and springs...

CB500/550 / Carbs jet size?

Hello all!

Still trying to get my 500 running properly...

After rebuilding the top end this winter I was pretty excited to go out for a ride as last summer was quite disappointing after having all sort out of problems with my engine... so this winter proceeded to fix it. After fitting everything back to normal and having my first ride again... second disappointment bike sounded fantastic but had to play up with the choke while driving to get some acceleration power... when I rebuilt the carbs I did it as per manual with the stock configuration but of course the bike is running pod filters and drag pipes completely unrestricted!!

What size jets should I put on? Any other ideas?

Also my gears keep slipping I did put EBC clutch springs..

Thanks in advance!

Noelia it may be an idea to swap the entire clutch basket complete with plates. It's possible that the basket is binding with the clutch inner or even with the plates themselves.

I gave a complete clutch away a few months ago to Dave from Warrington, I've probably got another lying around if your interested. After that you've really changed everything that it could be.

Oddjob I have sent you a pm
Is weird because we emptied the oil and inspect the clutch basket and there is not even wear on it, no marks at all from the discs.

The only think we found is the springs to be heavier but changed them for soft ones.

It has been a nightmare for me, I had the same problem but I am running a stock 500 engine.

Also stock lever.

I changed the Cable for a new genuine Honda one, check cable route,  check push rod, changed the entire clutch mechanism for a new one and still my clutch is hard rock plus it doesn't clutch properly. I have also changed the springs for softer ones and the only thing I did was worsening my problem with the skipping gears... so please if you find the solution let me know. I'm about to push the bike down the cliffs

I have more or less the same problem with my cb550... Checked valves, cam chain... All is good carbs are balanced but the idling is still shit! Getting very frustrated... The rattling noise goes away if the revs are higher... I got it in a garage right now for second time...

Just came back from my first proper ride! It is so nice outside!!

So I've noticed that I need to ride with the choke on otherwise it will just stop, so idling needs adjusting, Also when pulling the throttle it chokes at the beginning a little bit then It pulls nicely.
After an hour riding it I came back home and the noise was gone, then I put the choke off and it started doing it again... And the bike stopped.
What are your thoughts,? I think it is all about carburation?

If the bike has not been used since 1994, it is still worth checking the oil is getting to the top end and the clutch plates are free before you blow the top end. No mechanic will check this on a service unless instructed.

Trigger I meant the bike has only done about 100 miles per year from 1994 so it has been used very little but even though the owner has services the bike every year prior MOT's

I will ask my mechanic if he has checked if the oil is getting to the top end :) thanks for the tips!

I took the bike to a very reputable mechanic in my area, he owns all vintage bikes from a Norton commando to trials and he has had checked all out and said is ok and that the bike needs running to settle as it has only covered like 100 miles per year since 1994... On the way to the garage the bike ran awfully, 1st gear very short and the more I pulled the throttle the less power it had, on the way back it felt much better but the noise was still there. (Only when I'm not accelerating) I will take tomorrow for a ride, I will put new petrol in and I'll cross my fingers for it to go quiet! I'm very frustrated right now, bike wise.

I will let you all know how does it goes tomorrow!!!

Picked up the 550 yesterday from the garage but the engine is  still rattling... Carbs have been balanced, valves and cam chain adjusted.

The mechanic said I need to have a long ride for it to settle and go away, does anyone experienced something like this before?

I've just insured my cb550F with Carole Nash for £147 I'm 29 and only 1 year with my full driving license... But it is fully comprehensive, with UK and Eu breakdown cover, pillion, puncture assistance, commuting and social, plus an agreed value of £4500.

I wanted also to insure my cafe but because it has a custom frame I could not be  added to the vintage scheme and they quoted me £364!!!! ?? Do you guys tell if the bike have modifications?

If the thing ran perfectly for the last owner last week, then plug caps would be my first port of call, just tighten them on a turn and / or wd40 sprayed up inside the cap - for some reason I had a spate of plug caps fail across 3 differnt bikes in the last 4 years, none previously to that, wd40 seemed to revive them briefly - enough to get home / keep commuting a few weeks. It cannot hurt to do a full service for peace of mind in any case.

I haven't thought about that I will check the plugs tonight.

Thanks!!!
