Other Bikes / New bike, very impressed
« on: March 06, 2021, 07:11:34 PM »
I’m so impressed with my Triumph Thruxton 1200 I thought I’d let others know about the bike, sort of  “spread the word”.
I was looking around for a pre unit T120, I’d always wanted one, then I took a friends bike for a test ride, they say never meet your heroes and sadly on this occasion it applies, at least it did for me, pulling away it felt gutless, the brakes were very poor, the forks felt flexy, my friends bike certainly looks good but dynamically it felt very challenged, I guess what you’d expect really for an old bike with an even older design!, so rose tinted spectacles well and truly smashed I decided to look at a modern T120.
I test rode one at a Triumph dealership and it was good, very good!, lovely smooth engine with tons of torque, from what I’d seen on paper I thought it would feel like a barge, but absolutely not, it’s actually quite a rapid bike and handles very well, a little slow to turn in but not obtrusively so, the moment you set off the weight vanishes, great bike!
So I joined the Triumph Forum to gen up and saw a 1200 Thruxton in the bikes for sale thread that was cheap!, well if the Bonneville is good the Thruxton will be even better yes?, lighter crank, more power, smaller front wheel, so off in the van to Maidstone to pick it up, just as the owner described “as new” with 2,900 miles, I didn’t test ride it I just put it in the van for the long drive back to Derby, luckily the first ride showed that it was indeed better (for me) than the Bonneville, quicker revving, more than adequate power, quicker turn in, I’ve never taken to a bike as quickly as I have this one, honestly take one out for a test ride (or a bonnie), I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

CB750 / Coronavirus advice
« on: March 28, 2020, 08:20:14 AM »
Hi everyone, I’ve copied in a post I put on the Ducati forum, having just had C19 I don’t want anyone else to get it!, redouble your “stay safe”efforts , I’ll try to upload the table I refer to below, stay safe, Mark.

Hi All,  the whole world is waking up to the reality of this, stronger containment measures are coming in everywhere, and all of them are necessary to preserve lives, things are tightening up in the UK as well, we have to accept our freedoms will be curtailed for some time to come, it’s not pleasant but a lot better than the alternative.
Having just had the disease and being lucky that it mainly attacked my upper respiratory system and left my lungs relatively alone (although I did have “tight” lungs for 2 weeks and still get out of breath climbing a few stairs) I just want to pass this info on to everybody, we keep getting told that it starts with a fever and coughing, that is not correct!, I didn’t develop those symptoms until I was at least a week in, I understand that those are the common indicators but because of that advice I initially assumed I didn’t have it, very luckily for my elderly parents I erred on the side of caution and stopped going into their house when I began to feel ill, I went to see them but spoke to them from the end of their driveway, my initial symptoms were dizziness , strong fatigue and generally feeling unwell, so my advice is even if you think you just have a cold act as though it’s C19, many people I believe are infecting others because the symptom advice is misleading.
The table attached is accurate in my experience.

CB750 / Electrical question
« on: June 28, 2019, 05:37:17 PM »
Not a Honda but there are some on this forum with good electrical knowledge!, for me electrics = magic!, I’ve fitted small rear indicators on the rear of my Ducati Monster , leaving the standard indicators on the front,  now the indicators flash too fast, the small indicators have 5w bulbs and the standard fronts are 21w, if I fit small indicators on the front with 5w bulbs will that fix the problem, or will the flasher unit just not work properly with a total wattage of 10w per side when it’s previously had 42w?,

Green1 (Mick) and his dad (Dave) came round buy my EX650R today, all the way from Essex to Derby in the rain, hats off to them, the Duck sticker on the fairing was quite apt given the weather conditions!, good to meet you both again 👍

Other Bikes / Ducati M900 the new toy
« on: June 02, 2019, 06:10:56 PM »
I picked up this 1996 Monster yesterday, it was the dirtiest bike I’ve ever seen!, he’d had the belts done, changed the wheel bearings, starter motor, clutch plates, fitted new chain and sprockets done the oil change but had ridden on a daily basis since last August including through the winter on his 50 mile commute and never once cleaned it, I recon he could’ve gotten £500 more than I gave him simply by presenting it better on EBay (where it didn’t sell), anyway I’ve got the worst of it off and I can now confirm there’s a reasonabley nice M900 under all that muck 🙂, loads of tarting up and cleaning still to do but here it is, by the way [ Guests cannot view attachments ] superb fun to ride I recommend everyone to get one!

Quick question, I read that PD41A carb float heights should be 12.5 mm, does anyone know if that’s correct, thanks Mark.

Other Bikes / Electrics question
« on: April 19, 2019, 09:29:27 PM »
My James Captain is 6v positive earth, (I think!), the fuse is on a lead that connects to the negative terminal on the battery, is that correct?, everything works but I guess it would in this configuration regardless but is the wiring protected with the fuse on the negative lead?

Secondly I just fitted an electrex electronic ignition kit with lighting coil, the wiring diagram they supply with the kit shows the red wire from the reg/rec going to the positive terminal of the battery and black the the negative terminal, I put a multimeter over the terminals with the engine on tickover and it reads over 6v but fluctuates rapidly, like 6.23,6.33, 6.28, 6.34, is that normal?, I have no idea re electrics as you can probably tell! :)

Other Bikes / Pick this up in the morning
« on: March 09, 2019, 10:19:48 PM »
I’m currently sitting in a crummy hotel room in Croydon having driven a van down from Derby to pick this up tomorrow morning, 1955 James Captain 197cc, it’s a surprise gift for my 84 year old Father, he had one in the late 50’s I don’t think he’ll ride it other than in his garden but I know he’ll enjoy fettling it, I’ll try to get it running better before I give it to him though, the current owner says that it starts easily, runs and rides but it won’t rev fully, I’m thinking that could be a lot of things, blocked air filter, blocked exhaust, timing, blocked jet, needle height, float height, or worst case crank seals, any 2 stroke gurus out there?, any thoughts?

Tricks & Tips / Pet blower, great tool
« on: November 11, 2018, 11:48:39 AM »
I got one of these, the blast is very powerful, heated too, great for drying out your bike after a wash, gets water out of nooks & cranies, brake callipers etc, bike blowers are at least twice the price and pretty much identical, highly recommended, eBay £42 delivered. CB750 / Valve clearance check
« on: September 30, 2018, 04:47:36 PM »
Hi all, I just checked my valve clearances, inlets were 0.05mm but all exhausts were in excess of 0.10mm, Haynes says 0.05mm for inlets,  0.08mm for exhausts, please could someone confirm the Haynes figures are correct, it’s a K6 750 engine, cheers Mark.
