CB750 / DOHC CB750 / 900 Header compitibilty
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:26:08 PM »
Looking at various options to buy / fabricate tight fitting 4/1 system for my F2 cafe racer project. Love a yoshi pipe but hens teeth scenario applies (US sourced copy possibly an option)

If I go down the fabrication route, wandering about header pipes as starting point. SOHC 750 options limited but DOHC 750 / 900 more abundant. Pretty sure the answer is no but are these anywhere near compatible / easily tweaked?

Any advice appreciated.

Very impressed with the work. My honest impression when you started this thread was you had bitten too much off. Seems like it is me who will be biting some humble pie!  Hats off to you, top marks. Skills aside, where do you guys find the time?

Had a PC50 as a first machine. Gladly I don't have any pictures to NOT post, as I do have some self respect.

My first bike I would admit to after this was a CD175 I inherited from my brother in a box. Built it up, painted it etc.  with little or no knowledge of these things, just basic mechanics know how from other tinkering. Surprised what these very humble bikes are worth now - even the PC50!

Ref Yoshi Pipe - look at this site www.cb750cafe.com.  Ex pat brit who runs the business, Carpy, "as he is known in the trade", supposedly does a close replica. They also seem cheap enough but then import duties / vat?

Difference?

An analogy for you. Torrey Canyon versus motor torpedo boat. Accelerate / Stop / Turn (at the same speed), compare and contrast!!

Anyway that ain't the point, I love both my bikes for different things. One of the big reasons for the SOHC Hondas have character in buckets. My CBR maybe an eggcup full!! Hope to add at least half a bucket more  of the afore mentioned with the cafe mods to the 750 too - if I ever get round to it.

Have some piccies on my other pc / will post sometime.

Closest thing I have ridden previously was my old Honda 750 DOHC but even that was tweaked to 95BHP at the backwheel so not too shabby! However the slow handling and weight very similar from what I remember. Anyway blazing performance was never expected. This is just something to fiddle with and hopefully be interesting and good to look at when done.

At last got round to riding my F2 for the first time yesterday. Bought it last Feb. via adds section of this site. Had it running (ish) when I got it but never ridden it until yesterday.

Wow what a culture shock!!!!!  -  but good in other ways.

My other bike is a CBR600, against which the old 750 is out performed in every way as you would expect. However I do like the lazy way the F2 rides. In a funny way if you know it won't really perform by modern standards, you don't try - just enjoy it in other ways.

I was really just giving the bike a try out before strip down / cafe racer treatment in the future. Gearbox / clutch etc. fine, carburation understandably lumpy after standing a few years and I know ignition not 100%. Anyway good fun and can't wait to get stuck into it but I know this will be the winter realistically.

Off on a tangent - Got a good mate in tunnelling also well into bikes! Did you work on the channel tunnel - he was in charge of maintainance of one of the machines.

S.E.P. at Kegworth, Liecestershire - just off J23 M1 do similar. I had crank done on a 400 superdream years ago. Think I have seen an ad recently in Classic Mechanics or Classic Bike.
