Hello again,
Strange that you have a Triumph on the lift, I've got a 350 Featherbed Norton on mine and it's stopping me from getting on with proper bikes!  I've started to hate Brit stuff, nothing ever fits properly and they are almost impossible to put together without scratching the paintwork, I hardly ever have that problem with Japanese bikes.  Are you going to paint it in the same colour?

Mine was quite a bit worse than yours but all good now.  Lots of parts the same as 400/4 and plenty of stuff around the web, some at reasonable prices and others like 750 stuff.
Full repro exhausts available and I think, a better bike than the 400 in many respects.  Keep us all informed of your progress from time to time and shout if you need help/info,
Ian

Hi Tim,
Welcome to the forum from another 350 nut.  Plenty of stuff out there to get you up and running.
I have some odds and ends available and lot's of 400/4 bits are compatible.  Shout if you need any info/help

The frames are almost identical around the headstock as 400, so quite strong, but it still needs stanchions and possibly yokes.  Paint and decals are easy so just an exhaust system really.  Hope the mice have left the seat!

As we all know though, it soon adds up to big numbers, depending on how fussy you are for originality and you can still buy a minter for around 3k  Still like 'em though!

Certainly good value at the start price.  Would want to see the front down tube,as the forks are bent, but new frames are still available from DS.  All other stuff is still out there at reasonable prices.  Even the copy exhausts are not too bad.
They are delightful bikes to ride, I still prefer mine to my 400/4's
Just slightly better mannered and the riding position is better for me.  5 speeds suit better too.
See if you can get a ride on one and then steal that one from DK.  If you are passing by Orkney you can have a go on mine  :)

Misc / Open / Re: Plastic parts that were made of metal
« on: February 21, 2015, 10:13:02 AM »
Ford experimented with a carbon fibre crankshaft some time back and my Daimler has lots of critical stuff made of plastic - I thought we were running out of oil!  It's usually fine to spec plastic during the limited warranty period but as soon as we enthusiasts get to buy this stuff, the fun starts.  There's a lot of Tupperware on my 1500 Wing but the critical stuff is usually good metal.  Mind you, I'm just finishing off my 350 Featherbed Norton which is all metal and bugger all fits as good as Jap stuff!
Hang on to your metal bits, as the Innuit said to the Monkey.

I think I agree with Lobo on this one, our plates, frame and engine numbers are nearly always in the public domain, it's just that in the virtual world, the scumbags can find a suitable clone from the comfort of their stolen leather armchairs.  Long before t'internet a friend had his bike ID stolen while he was at an auto jumble.  He knows that because it was the only place he went before it went bang and needed another 2 year restoration.  Even car VIN numbers are viewable through the corner of the front screen.

Hi Ash,
Yes I remember the process and the yellow/green colour it produced, unfortunately I don't immediately recognise the name alodine but that's not say it isn't correct.  As you know we used all kinds of nasty chemicals at the factory back then.  I well remember the heated trichlorethylene bath which was great if you had a cold - didn't half clear your head!!  No wonder my brain's addled now!!  Bondaprimer is great as an etch for aluminium, but I use Upol acid 8 etch in spray cans these days.  You might get that from that paint place in Courtney Street. (APS, I think) Talking of nasty stuff, what's happened to Nitromors? bleedin useless for car and bike stuff now, might as well pee on it these days.

One of my 400/4's also has 398 on the V5, as you say it's another DVLA mistake, but there are definitely some 398 Jap spec bikes around.  Years ago I bought a brand new GL1200 Aspencade from an importer in Cheshire and when the V5 arrived it said 'Scooter Combination' even though it was a solo. It took nearly a year to get the class changed to Bicycle - DVLA - tell 'em nowt and enjoy your 398cc's

Yep, definitely not a 350/4 colour they were either candy olive green, candy matador red or silver and all had quite distinctive tank decals, white/orange on first 2 colours and dark blue on the 3rd.  Headlamp was black on all.  Still a nice well mannered bike though and pipes look original type, but o/s top one looks like it's blowing.  Reasonable price too, as they are starting to be noticed more now.  I think mine will probably be the last bike in my collection to go, it's such a lovely thing to ride.

Not sure what's going on here, but my engine starts with a button ;D

Seriously now, I think all engines for 400 are CB400FE. My very early one is 1000??? 1974 build date and my 1975 P reg is 104xxxx
Just checked both 350/4's and they are CB350FE 1002xxxx
Perhaps it means engine rather than frame?

Sorry Bitsa and Ka Ja, missed out the word 'between' instruments, have edited it now so as not to cause confusion.

Fully agree that you should always use correct colours and sizes for mods to loom and as said, easier to modify an existing 'nearly correct' loom than start from scratch.  Also if you have to unwrap parts of the loom, then use the correct non sticky looming tape to finish off.  PLEASE don't use scotchlocks anywhere on a motorcycle, unless you carry your bus fare home at all times.
Another plus point I forgot to add, the coils and points wiring are in the same positions, oh, and the neutral switch too.  What could possibly go wrong?

Interchangeability / Re: 350 4
« on: January 26, 2015, 07:59:39 AM »
Definitely different part numbers but the main physical differences are:

350 ignition switch positioned under left front of tank, 400 on steering head
Idiot lights on 350 as 500 as part of handlebar clamp, 400 are in between instruments.
350 USA had high rise bars so switchgear wiring longer.
Headlamp has no switch on some models

Good bits,
Elecs on air box almost identical
Brake switch positions same
Indicators more or less same positions

Not insurmountable problems if you are good at soldering and wiring, but I wouldn't want to pay someone to modify
