CB750 / Re: Air box rubber gasket all twisted
« on: April 22, 2017, 08:51:40 PM »
I fit rubbery bits onto dishwashers,  sometimes the parts are distorted or shrunk and they need the V hot water routine - usually I put the parts on an extended rinse cycle (80°), that usually works.
Looking like I might have to give this method another go. I took the clips off and as I thought it's still not looking very good. Don't tell Mrs G what I'm doing with the washer though will you. She still blames me for the strange smell in the kitchen after she caught me baking some freshly painted engine bits in the cooker.

The gasket can be changed cos I've done it before. Def a 2 person job though and needs patience and something for aching bones if you are working on the floor.

Let it soak in V hot water for a bit.
Tried that one thanks but no joy. The issue is that it's not a case of it being hard and needs softening but rather in the past it has slipped off the lip of the middle section when some one has fit it. Then the lower filter box tightened onto it has squashed it out of shape and stretched it in parts. Since I posted this I have managed to get it in place around the middle section and held it in place with Bulldog Clips. Bearing in mind it could have been like that for 30 odd years I have a feeling it will just spring back as to how it was found when I rescued it.

CB750 / Air box rubber gasket all twisted

I'm sorting out an air box for the F2 I'm on with. The rubber gasket has at some stage been put on and allowed to get twisted out of shape. Does any one know of a method of reforming it back to its original shape. I'm sure at some point I've heard or read something, (or was it a dream I had).

Here's a thought .. are the breather pipes from the cases and rocker box all free of kinks etc and connected correctly.

Managed to source a reproduction spacer on E bay all the way from Germany.
For info for anyone interested the parts are different between F1 and K7. Though interchangable with various other models. eg the K7 spacer is used on a variety of others including CBX and some 80's Hondas.

It is possible to have the guides fitted with inserts instead of new guides but still needs the head off. SEP and The Cylinder Head Shop both do this. The diameter reamed should be 6.6mm I think. From experience car guys generally don't have the right gear. My local engineering shop will not touch valve guides on Japanese bike heads as they just don't have the right equipment and refuse to do a second rate job for some one.

CB750 / Spacer on rear axle sprocket carrier... help please.
« on: March 03, 2017, 07:22:40 PM »
I'm building a bit of a bitsa to use up my stock of old parts. The plan is to use a rear wheel from a 750 K7. However the spacer on the bearing for the sprocket carrier (part no 42605-393-000) is missing. I have one from an F1 (part no 42605-300-000). I am assuming they will be different due to the different numbers. If any one is able to measure the diameter and length of the thick section of a K7 spacer could they let me know so I might be able to machine the one I have to fit. So if you happen to have one to hand please help me out it would be a great help.

I would leave it alone. It will soon be covered in carbon any way and any rubbing down might cause damage around the circumference edge.

Looks like a poor job at tacking on those labels. I hope any engine work was to a better standard. The only UK supplied pistons that I can recall for the 550 were from Hepolite and I think these were manufactured abroad and only marketed and distributed by Hepolite.

I have used Wonder Wheels cleaner on STAINLESS pipes to remove the yellow. Not sure how it will work on chrome though. It is acid based so be careful if you try.

If it's any consolation I did the same many years ago. I managed to swop the gasket without lifting the engine out. It was very awkward and a friend is a big help so they can hold the cover and move it about whilst you fiddle, (there's a polite word), about with the gasket.

Good luck

Here we go again.
I'm in the process of using up all my odd spares on a project and would value some opinions. The plan is based on a 76 F1 engine. Since the head and cylinder block both have extensive damage, and as F1 oversize pistons are rare, I am thinking of using the head and block from an earlier K model along with the flat top pistons. I can't say what year they are from but they do have the recesses for the dowels on the oil drain side on the block and also with the old style exhaust stubs still fitted to the exhaust ports on the head.
So what are your thoughts on using these?? Also can I use the F1 cam shaft on the earlier head set up or would I need an early K model cam.

Thanks for any thoughts or wisdom from your experiences.

Neil G
