Title: Hi from South West Scotland
Post by: Doonhamer on February 26, 2017, 07:48:48 PM
Hello to all forum members, I'm looking forward to being involved in the community.

I've just bought my first Honda, a 1974 CB350F in Candy Bacchus Olive. It was imported in 1980 and featured in the book "The Essential Buyers Guide to Honda SOHC Fours by Peter Henshaw.

According to the PO it is mostly original and unrestored, although the handlebars, mirrors and shock absorbers are not standard. It still has the original factory 4/4 exhausts although number 4 has had a few minor repairs and could probably do with replacing, if I can find one. The chrome is all original and in good condition but the paintwork is badly sun damaged and I am having it professionally resprayed. I did think about keeping it original but I just couldn't live with it.

Feedback and comments are most welcome.

the fact that most are over 40 years old and still running is because of the expertise on places like this,

relax and join in,and post lots of pics

Thanks Trigger, Mike & John.

The pictures flatter the paintwork, it's quite rough when seen up close.

I'll keep you updated with pictures as work progresses.

Welcome to the forum of fun.
Lovely looking bike and being a bit controversial..... I like that colour of candy green, it goes with the bike and the period. I would respray it the same colour.

That was my intention Dave, I want to keep it as original looking as possible plus I also like the colour.

Welcome.

Lovely bike, like the 400/4 the scale against the larger 4's is what appeals to me. Such superb engineering. Possibly more so with the pipe detail too. Cherish it mate.

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Some brilliant, brilliant people on here and there is no shortage of knowledge, experience and a genuine willingness to help other Honda Folk. I am also a member on some Triumph Forums, but this one is the best one by miles.

If look at Roy Hall's post from a year or so ago.....just click on his 'Profile' then his 'Posts' - you'll be able to follow the saga of his CB350 Four. Roy's bike is an absolute stonker - it's even the same colour as yours and although he did a complete rebuild, I'm sure that you'll find lots of stuff of interest to you and hopefully it will inspire you to achieve a bike as nice as Roy's.

We like photos on here so don't be afraid of posting them !

Thanks for that. I'll take a look Roy's post, I just started stripping it down this evening so should be a useful read.

Thanks. I do have a few questions but should probably start a new post. What would be the best section for that?

Welcome from me too.
I like the 350/4 and that is a nice green, especially when caught in sunlight.
I always liked the Ilex Green as used on G5 models too, but not so keen on the lighter greens such as the candy jade green of the 500.
Ah well, personal taste, each to their own ....
As for new posts I'd go for the CB350/400 section unless it's a really general query; someone will always spot your post!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Always good to see another green CB350F on here. Rebuilt mine a while ago and did a restoration thread that starts here   http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,8257.0.html     May be of some use to you. Cheers.

Thanks everyone for the positive and friendly comments.

My painter has asked me for the paint code for Candy Bacchus Olive. Is it possible to get it somewhere or is there a recipe for that colour that he can use?

Also, the tank on my bike is 2 different colours, it's darker in the area inside the graphic. Just wondering if the dark area is the correct colour and the lighter parts have faded.

Its a Candy colour that cant be got in a tin. The colour is built up using a base colour coat then darkened with subsequent layers of top coat. Its an expensive highly skilled job. Best contact Menno on here, he's an expert. Your colour will fade to blue, so if you see a blue tint in the paint that's the base colour showing through.

Just been looking at Roy's build thread again.
Details of the painter he used are on page 8 of the thread, but I don't know if he ever discovered whether the paint used was metallic or candy.
Looks stunning though ...

It was a light metallic over a colour base coat (candy-ish) that replicated the original pretty well, but was considerably cheaper. I had a NOS headlamp ear that he matched the paint to, on taking it outside it was very hard to tell the difference. He painted the whole lot (tank, 2 side panels, headlamp ears, fork shrouds, headlight) plus a few black parts for £380, including fitting my decals and clear-coating all the green. The budget simply wouldn't run to candy. You would need to be very familiar with old Honda's to spot the difference. I am very pleased with it.

I'm going down a similar route Roy, my painter has quoted £400 for the same job. Having read Menno's article on Candy paints, the cost plus the difficulty and expense of having any future repairs done has scared me off. Hopefully I'll be as happy as you with end result.

Great thread on the rebuild BTW.
