Title: Sump Mess

I'm still building up my spare engine and just digging out the outer casing for cleaning and spraying. I have two sumps but both have been over tightened and cracked. I know the other one leaks a bit, so I'd prefer to use this one. The question is, would you grind down this bird shit welding or leave it as it is?

If it has been welded form the inside as well, you should be safe to sand the mess down. Just be careful.

If no luck sanding the mess away then this guy has a sump in good nick (according to his web page )

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at that sump and good point Trigger. It hasn't been welded on the inside. In fact I can see quite a bad crack in there. So best to leave alone I think.

Before use i would be tempted to fill it with diesel or parafin and leave it standing to see if any gets through the crack/weld

Memories  :( 
- After cracking the sump on mine (I blamed Honda for placing that drain hole in a weak area on the corner and with too few threads !)
I had it welded very neatly at work and a collar welded on to provide some more thread length before re-tapping.
Never broke again but I had learned not to overtighten -got a couple more cracked ones repaired in the same way.

No, inside in fine. I would still get it filled though just for peace of mind. Will post if off soon.

That's some lumpy welding!

I think just taking out some of the most proud parts of the weld and dressing the edges/toes to blend it a bit would make it look a lot better if you're careful
