You are correct in that transaction charges are vatable. Not an issue if you are VAT registered (as we are) but another hit if you’re not.

We never took Amex (even in the days of slide-over card impression machines) as the fees were exorbitant.

I am definitely no accountant but...

The total card commission over a period (net) is then +vat? They are charging Vat on a service as such.

What I mean Steve is if we take £1000, we pay card charges on all that at point of sale. Then come Vat time, we give the inland Revenue the vat content on the £1000, about £150, against which we have paid the credit card company 1-2% already. Yes we get the added vat content on that charge back but that's it. We are paying a charge against money we are simply handling for Revenue.

As we were market and show traders before retirement we didn't carry a card reader for years and finally ended up getting one. The difference it made wasn't worth talking about we made so few card transactions and it was really a waste of money and effort. Especially when working in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere where a reliable phone signal is as rare as a working card reader. Then the pandemic came and went and the increase since in cash only traders has grown massively. People are also realising a cashless society hands over all control to the already over greedy bankers and gov. Cash payments are on the rise.

Well by not having the card option those show traders lost £100 of sales to me yesterday of which they would have given £1.50 to the bank. As they were loading the gear back into the van wonder which they would have preferred ? Now those sales from me will probably go to some eBay seller who is slowly killing them anyway. Trying to go back to cash is raging at the wind.

Yes they lost £100 of sales but that £1.50 would have come out of the profits on that sale and depending on the item the profit could be very little.  It may not have been so bad if in 2018 it hadn't been made illegal to add a surcharge for those wanting to use a card, the choice then would have been the customers cash or card, instead of forcing the hit on the trader.

Sore point that re surcharges as Trader. When we were able to do that, people then simply paid by debit card (15-20p charge per transaction) as opposed to up to 2% of credit card transaction which will also include the VAT, we then pay to the Revenue! American Express cards are even worse which is why few people take them. It always makes me snigger when customers ask "do you take American Express?", as few do for obvious reasons.

Now we cant surcharge, people preferably pay by credit card to get their cash back points! I love financing that.... >:(

I don't actually think the cash thing is so much related to the actual card charges, as a debit card transaction as I say is 20p or so to the trader. You can actually refuse to take credit cards - (maybe wrong). I think it will be the mobile terminal required, as it would be for me. It is  a special bit of kit that works on the mobile phone platform that has to be rented as a considerable cost for what may be the "occasional event" (with longer term contracts). There are some phone based apps which I know little about but I'm sure that will incur higher charges in some way.

For those with a larger turnover being cash only when VAT registered etc.? The VAT part of the sale is very significant and cash sale very useful to those traders so minded... ;)

Peter Horton refurbished the original clocks including converting the rev counter to a suitable 400/4 item from the 250 rev counter that was on the bike. They look fantastic and I asked Peter to put the MPH/KPH face on the speedo for no other reason than I like them :-).

This morning I collected the finished paint set from Tony at Cyclesprays in Horsham, Sussex. He has done a marvelous job considering the tank I took to him! He placed the decals on the tank (decals supplied by Piki (Reddice) on here) and clear coated them with the same on the side panels. I'll decide it I want to put the saving lives sticker above the fuel tank, I don't really like the look of it!

I went to refit the carbs yesterday but thought I'd bench test them first with fuel to check the floats, of course one leaked really badly (No 1). A frustrating three hours spent adjusting the float and re-testing got me nowhere and it looks like I'll have to fit one of the new Keyster float valves to replace the original as the tip looks worn. What is it about 400/4 carbs, they work fine one minute and flood the next!

Next job will be to fit the carbs and handlebars with the switches.

That's so fast Dave,  just sitting on the table in such a yellow way!!

Seriously top job on the paint - local guy to you?

Didn't the Yamaha EXUP have a similar system at one time?

I think that was ram air as in forced induction of air into airbox / carbs via large diameter pipework from the front of the fairing. Also see the early ZXR750 Kwaks with what looked like vacuum cleaner hoses behind the fairing running into the tank area. Ram air on the GT Suzukis was a cowling round the top of the head, forcing air into the area for cooling.  And yes a gimmick then and now.

On my old foot beat in Derby West was a Co-op garage where all the Milk Floats were charged up overnight.
Believe it or not an empty  Milk Float would be occasionally stolen then dumped on the nearby Mackworth Council Estate.

Sounds about right knowing the "estate" Ted.  ;)

There's a clever boy. Impressive. How long did the prep take?

Cheers for the normal superb technical observations.

Yes keeping an eye on things.

I had read somewhere too about lean burn engines not helping.

Why would you need to top up the oil on a new car Ted?

My wife’s Audi is 8 years old and I’ve never touched it.

Interesting....

I have a brand new Ford Tourneo. Made by VW and the same as Caddy. Flashed up needing oil at 4k miles. Likewise my friends brand new Audi Q3 did similar. Apparently VWs can do this but then settle down.....?? Spoken to Ford on mine and told to pop it in  to have it looked at. All feels a bit uncomfortable to me as likewise I thought new vehicles now us little oil. My Expert can that ive had from new does not use much...

Just donated, not sure when last time was but but relatively recently I think. However recent events reminded me of what a excellent but difficult job at times he does. Well done Steve.
