My girlfriend has led a life of far too much luxury and is now asking if she can have a backrest for my 550 K3. Does anyone know if you can get universal type sissy bars that fit onto universal type luggage racks?

Yep its called a top box. ;)

Hmmmmm. The top box doesn't have a flat back to rest on or mount a pad on.

Try to convince her to lean forward. Nice feeling for you and the handling of your bike will not be affected at higher speeds when riding solo.

HI,
If there is no alternative you could try this, even though it is pretty vile to my eye at least.

The seller is D and K, they often have...shall we say unusual seats and things taken off their US imports. What were Americans thinking of in the 70s and 80s !
This for example, imagine it on your otherwise standard bike as you cruise down to the coast on the A22 :)

I also had a look at eBay and saw the backrest linked to by Rob.
There are various different ones on there, although many are in the States.
There are also various shaped backrests available to fit different top boxes, one or other of which may do the job.
I suggest you have a look on there - I searched for 'motorcycle backrest' - and see if you spot anything that may fit the bill.

For making something to fit onto a topbox, look at things like moto gp seats. They just make them up to different shape and size to suit the rider out of closed cell foam glued and shaped to fit the bike and rider preferences.
You can buy polyurethane closed cell or similar an various thickness sheets, cut the shape and amount of layers you want then stick together with evostick and double side tape fix it to top box. You can obviously make it so the passenger doesn't lean too far back then and really alter the handling.
