I want to get my spokes cb750k wheels returned. I plan on getting the hubs and rims powder coated satin black then take them to a wheel builder to get them laced with black spokes and trued.
I've been advised that powder coated spokes won't keep their finish for very long.
I contacted one place (black cat wheels) and they want to charge £174 per wheel and that's with me getting them powder coated first! Wtf! With new tyres as well I'm looking at over £350 per wheel!
Contacted another place (Devon rim company) and whilst they do provide black spokes they are unwilling to build a wheel using parts provided by a customer I.e. They only use brand new bits.
Anyone got any recommendations of who I could use in either South Wales, Devon or Dorset?

If you can get the bits then maybe have a go at building them up yourself, its a satisfying job to do and not too hard and doesn't require much in the way of tools or equipment. I did mine using a spare swing arm mounted in a vice to hold the wheel and a bit of wire wrapped onto the swing arm as a pointer to check it was true plus a streight edge and small ruler to get the offset right. I used a dial gauge to check the job but that wasn't really needed as it was pretty damn near spot on by eye before using the gauge and I just wanted to run the numbers and check tolerances for peace of mind and curiosity. In my case I re used the old spokes and rim as I'd only pulled the wheel appart to fit the hub on my lathe to re line the brake drum, cannt remember why I did a front wheel, probaby to get rid of pitted spokes and build a best of both wheel from parts. - for the extra work in saving spokes for re use I'd not bother re using spokes or nipples unless facing a stony broke situation as its a real pain in the butt to get them appart in good shape compared to just cutting them off with bolt croppers.

my local bike repairer builds my wheels at a reasonable cost,
he has done both Honda and Yamaha wheels using rims and spokes from Central Wheel,and Hagons as well,
we are close to South Wales,

Powder coating wheels should cost no more than £50 per wheel, go to a wheel specialist which does car wheels, who will do the rims and hubs. They won't rebuild it thro if it's been stripped. I had mine done spokes and all, I will see how it gos. Hagon do wheels, but not sure on prices.

To be fair this is the route I'll go down if I can't find someone to do it for a reasonable price.

Where abouts is he? I've messaged central wheel for a quote on spokes but I think they are probably going to message back asking for the exact lengths needed, haven't got my wheels to have at the moment. Can you remember what you paid for the spokes and then to have the wheels built up?

I looked into this and it seems there are 2 options.. haveing the wheel trued then removing tyre and powder coating as a unit and then re fit tyre. It means you can't adjust spokes further down the line without ruining the powder coat. The other option is to do it which the wheels stripped down but again I've heard you will ruin the powder coat on the nipples/ rims when assembling

I paid 62 pounds per wheel for stainless spokes....fitted and true. Top job in my opinion.

both Hagon and Central charge up to £100

Hagon have quoted me £126.56 for single gauge and £137.77 for butted per set. I take it a 'set' is 1 wheel.
What's the difference between single gauge and butted?

Mine are at central wheels Birmingham £85 but it's a bit of a wait 7 weeks :'( :'( :'(. I stripped mine down and took in, all I needed was nipples as I had everything else.

Single gauge spokes are uniform thickness along its length.
Butted spokes are thinner in the middle

Because the thinner part is calculated to take the strain needed to do the job, the thicker ends allow extra material to accommodate the threads or the bent end without compromising the core specification.
Also (as with waisted bolts and studs) the load is more evenly handled / spread along the component and if designed properly you don't get a high stress point which occurs with a straight component at the bend or where the threads end.

Save weight, the middle bit is under less stess than the bits contacting the hub or rim - rim ends have threads cut into them, other end has a bend and needs to spread its load over an area of alloy hub which is softer. Might shave a few grams off the wheel, probably looks nicer too. ( looks being very subjective as to what is nice )

In addition any decent spokes will have the threads rolled (could be called cold forging) into them rather than die cut which would destroy the material integrity and reduce its tensile capacity, just what you wouldn't need in a spoke. :o

7 weeks at central wheels!!!!
I need a complete rebuild, rims, spokes, and shot blasted hubs, but i'm not waiting 7 weeks.
i will call them in the morning and see if this is their lead time at the moment , if it is does anyone know of anyone else in the Birmingham area that can do it quicker please?
I wanted to ride it this summer!!

I suggest you split the job into 3 stages and/or suppliers,firstly rims and spokes,then blasting the hub and polishing/painting,
the assembly,
can you paint/polish the hubs,and build the wheels,or would you need to source it?
just contact ALL the wheel/rim/spoke suppliers for quickest lead time
