Title: Out and about 2022
Post by: Nurse Julie on January 01, 2022, 01:32:31 PM
Happy New Year everyone. Made the most of todays mild(er) temperatures. Roads very wet and muddy here but it didn't stop us crazy riders getting out for a good ride and a cuppa.

Another year, another thread

Out at Kings Head,Bishop Cleeve with the Cotswolds bikers,

And before you ask,

No I didn't ride a bike, it was too wet,and I detest cleaning,

Good crowd,

we all know Trig has Cuban heels on his bike boots, doesnt everyone?? ::)
I'm just suprised he doesnt tuck his bows in, I find they dont get half as bad if you tuck them into your stripy socks that you roll over the top of the boot!............. ;D

I managed a few miles on the CB750 and the BMW this afternoon.

15c and dry roads, though damp was in the air. Anyway, it was good to be out again after nearly three weeks with no riding due to rain, frost and fog!

Just done about 20 miles on the 500 - very mild. Just spoiled by a tail gater driving 6 foot from my mudguard for a few miles - when I signalled him to back off, he just looked bewildered. Oblivious!

That's Toad Hall next to Ainsdale beach (just south of Southport), it's just been recently painted like that. If you go park legally as the Traffic Wardens are keen to issue tickets!

Thanks, yeah it's a S7 of 1950 vintage, front brake is worse than a 70's CB but despite its age has enough performance to deal with today's traffic.

As a few on here like aircraft
We have been away for few days. It's not often you get chance to get in one of these. Unfortunately due to a quite recent  hip
replacement i couldn't make the final step from the ladder down into the cockpit so she smugly did it.  We have been promised a

Started getting some of the bikes out of winter hibernation yesterday. Went out on the CD's though for a lovely ride around the Wolds. In the middle of nowhere there is a church in a farmaryard. The Church is well stocked with everything needed to make yourself a cuppa (including biscuits) and you just leave a donation. A good use of a church that is otherwise not used.

Graham has almost finished building a UK 500/4 K0 that has so many NOS parts on it, it's looks newer than new 😁😁😁. This one is in black, like your K1. I suggested he has it painted Gold but it was black originally, so that's what it's staying as.

The burger van normally parked next to the racecourse at Chepstow was missing,

Hence my missing a bacon roll and/burger,

I arrived home hungry and thirsty,

The things I put up with when I go for a ride out!!!!

PS,The weather looks good for tomorrow, so I may be tempted to venture to a greasy spoon near Tewkesbury

For the first time in ages my back has been good enough for a short ride. Went to get the bikes out of hibernation then realized that none are currently road worthy.
The ride out idea was short lived as I had to go out and rescue my brother. This is what I found the chain has only done around 1000miles

I'm wondering if something was thrown up at it as there is a rub mark on the frame

Chains are way too tough to suffer from impact damage, looks much more likely material failure.

Could check both sprocket to see if there's anything gone around inside the chain on one of the links though, trying to force the chain wide on a single link.

Went on a rideout last weekend with the bike club and some MAG types. Only about 80 miles but good fun.  The dreaded misfire, which I had forgotten about, has resurfaced.  1 and 4 cut out intermittently,  sometimes for a few miles.  It's got a Dyna S ignition system which, up to lady year has been good.  Dyna don't sell individual pickups but I've tracked down a system on fleabay for about £50 that's fits a Suzuki which I'll make fit.
My other bike,  the GPZ500S,  hasn't run for 7 months because I've been too busy with work, building my car port, then the weather turned shite.
Anyway,  I put fresh juice in it and after ½ minute of cranking, it started up.  It hadn't been trickle charged or anything, the Motobatt held a good charge over the winter.  Dead impressed with that.

We had a ride down from Orkney to Fife - on the north side of the Firth of Forth on the C125 Super Cubs a week or two ago - probably a bit too early in the year but we were mostly lucky with the weather.  About 600 miles in a fairly relaxing but fun-filled 6 days

Good to be out on the newly restored bike, 60 miles on the clock now, not venturing too far away just yet though. I have kept the revs below 5000 so far, 4000 up to 30 miles, the shells are original so really the only frictional things to bed in are the rebored pistons. Any tips on a running in regime would be welcomed. The only issue at the moment is a reluctance for the revs to fall back to a decent idle when warm. I need to check the cable routing before I dig deeper. I installed taper roller bearings in the steering yesterday which has greatly improved the feel of the front end, also the handlebars now line up with the direction the bike is travelling, which is a bonus. Never having ridden one of these before, the cornering is amazing, makes my Bonneville feel like a big fat pig.

Looks good,

Don't load the engine,
Let it spin freely.

Accelerate fairly briskly,

And at times close the throttle and let the motor slow the bike.

The idea is to get pressure behind the rings, help them bed in and seal,

That is a lovely looking VF1000R, Honda had learnt a very hard lesson with the original VF750 and knew they had to make future VFR's cam gear drive to salvage their very damaged reputation. Every time I think of selling my 23 year old VFR800 I get a twinge of guilt, I couldn't live without a VFR and the soundtrack of those cam gears with the unique exhaust note ;D

She's getting a bit sought into now and showing her age and mileage, I'm just about to start fitting a replacement swing arm this year and I've all the bearings, seals and fixings to change that go with it;  braided lines (14 in total :o), new EBC discs and HH pads, new rear shock from the states with a new spring dialled in to my extensive girth and Ive some Ktech internals for the front to fit. Then its back to some standard bodywork and a paint up in the winter. I'll never have white wheels ever again................what an arse ache to keep clean ;D

Decided after over 100k miles she needs a bit of love............that and the front brakes are now shite after being thrashed around today to Western-Super-Mud and back having a laugh with a chap on a Fi 800.........we had a right hoot ;D

Nice ride out today, didn't take any pics though. A bit bloody chilly on the knees to say the least 😁😁😁 As we're retired properly now from the engine builds and restorations, it's made no difference whatsoever to our riding, we used to go out whenever we fancied before and still do the same now 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ever gone out for a ride and  something nearly impossible happens. On Saturday I was riding up near Trafalgar square, I'd gone out for the ride to kill some time and decided to go see the pro Ukraine protests on Whitehall when suddenly a guy calls my name and chucks his arm over my shoulder. It was 'Danny the Tigger' my BMW riding nephew, who was in London for a weekend with his biker wife who I met for the first time, and another couple of friends who were with them. They are living in Germany, given the condensed nature of their visit and with friends in tow I wasn't planned into the picture but fate had other ideas! He had spotted me because CB400F riders with a Tiger on their backs are not very common anywhere these days. One of those million to one encounters.

70 mile ride today with 260 miles since rebuild. Carbs now much better and bogging down/poor idle gone after cleaning pilot jets and adjustments to air screws. Just off the B664 which is one of Simon Weirs routes in his book Bikers Britain, great weather for it.

Thought I would blow the cobwebs off the F1 (and me) and go for a ride, a friend suggested going to a meeting at The Raven near Whitchurch, loads of bikes and bikers, and some nice Hondas, most of which seemed to be "daily rides" rather than show bikes.

Lovely bike, there's a hell of a lot of work to get the Vincent engine into a featherbed frame, it normally involves a hacksaw and a few blades! My Triton has a unit engine installed and that was difficult enough! Hats off to the guy who built the Vinton 👍

It's funny how they name them, but probably more how the two part names mash into one than much else.

Norvin as used generally is a norton motorcycle with a Vincent engine, so you can see the lineage.  Vincent didn't really have a frame, engine is structural with an oil tank bolted to the heads and carrying a steering headstock on that assembly, added to which was always girder type forks (aluminium high tensile blades on expensive models) then rear subframe with cantilevered swingarm bolted to rear of engine.

But  by that protocol the Triton should be a "Noriumph" which would sound odd  :)

Others are Vin-Cati and Tri-Bsa with different mixes.
Title: Re: Out and about 2022
Post by: Laverda Dave on May 09, 2022, 09:12:51 AM
It's difficult to see from the photo but it appears the builder has managed to slot the Vinnie engine into the featherbed frame whilst keeping the frame intact. I have never seen that done before, in normal circumstances the top rail has to be cut out to allow the cylinder heads to fit in the space available. Same applies to the bottom loop. The frame may be cut on the other side. Either way it appears as though the engine will have to come out to get either head off. Fantastic work though, looks factory.

There appears to be newer Featherbed frames being made Dave, saw some a few years back at Ace that had Suzuki fours in them like this one.

Often with bigger diameter tubing too.

Some excellent bikes there, and I’ve always enjoyed the food at the Raven. I once spent a long weekend there (and in the now ruined Cherry Tree across the road) waiting to do a parachute jump from the WW2 airfield next door.

I always fancied squeezing a Harley Sportster engine into a featherbed frame (it can be done, I’ve seen one) mainly so I could register it as a HarDon.

I’ll get my coat.

I've seen that Suzuki at Kempton a couple of times Nigel, another nice build. Dave Degans used to make his own featherbed frames, I think Eric Patterson put a V-Twin JAP in one of them for his Bonneville record attempts.
Mr Davo, yep I've seen Harley engines in the featherbed, a company did a limited run of them a few years ago, can't remember who it was though, I know you could order one via the Ace Cafe! The name would be good😁

The ex-plod Interpol with the extractor exhaust looks good, bet it sounds good as well. There was a guy who built a replica JPS Norton rotary on the IOM in 96. He even wore replica factory leathers to look the part. He and his bike would bring the other bikes to a standstill when he went past.

Derbyshire Road Traffic Section used to run the Norton Rotary bike - one Patrol Officer told me they were really good for catching speeders as they were quiet plus they had the acceleration to catch bikers in Matlock on busy Sundays.

What sort of fish is the farm rearing? Big mouth Bass?, catfish?
Title: Re: Out and about 2022
Post by: Laverdaroo on May 29, 2022, 02:04:48 PM
It used to be a catfish farm but the bottom dropped out the market some years ago so it’s a koi farm predominantly although they do about 7 tonnes of 20-30lb mirror carp which they ship all over.

The mint is in the koi though. It’s been fairly ignored and I’ve got my work cut out. It appears everyone’s just tossed it off over here and there’s very little stock in the sale tanks so if I can get another 800-900 new koi spawned and into rearing ponds before I go I’ll be happy.

Going to be a bit of a task!

Bit warm here!, 100% humidity and 35C

Not what a miserable northerner is used to but quite like it tbh.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220529/696cf6634888f65fc7eb663a07b470c2.jpg)

That brings back some memories, in 1972 I had to sell my new CB750K2  to put down a deposit on a house, so to get around I bought one of those and it was great fun, apart from the time I left the side stand down after stopping at the paper shop going home off nights, the first bend could have been a disaster but luckily nothing was coming the other way.

Unfortunately I got turned off CD175s when one knocked me off my bicycle when I was doing my paper round at age 15. I landed on my paper bag so no serious damage to me but I can still remember the Honda sliding down the road on it's side with a lot of sparks. It was in a bit of a mess afterwards. 😣

East Kirkby Bike Night tonight. Beautiful evening for it. I didn't take any photos but there were a few nice CB SOHC/4's there this evening. It was totally packed out, they had to open another field to park in as so many bikes turned up. Just Jane the Lancaster did her Taxi run and this year she has her wings tips back on, so looking and sounding great. I'll download some photos taken by the drone, the helicopter and the Aviation Centre staff when they are available.

Better late than never 😊😊😊
The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritige bike night last week at East Kirkby had 1897 bikes turn up.

These pics were taken half way through the evening, the field that is half full ended up full and they started using the middle (empty) field for bikes as well.

Oh that's so sad 😢😢😢😢. We have had quite a few deaths of bikers locally this year. Even if we don't know them personally, it's always a sad time.

Out on the CL450, this is Quickedge Road above Mossley, thought (on the first edition OS map) to be a Roman road, there's another one running along the other side of the Tame Valley, where you see the boundary between the moorland and the cultivated fields.

The CL450 isn't really the 'Scrambler' it was marketed as in the States (too heavy), but it gives me the confidence to explore unpaved roads that I wouldn't take my other bikes anywhere near. It's all fine and dandy on this part, but later I encountered a steep down hill section where storms had washed away big chunks of the track.

Went for a ride yesterday and ended up at a little classic car show at Doddington Hall near Lincoln. Free to get in and the coffee was great. It was arranged by the Masons. Lots of Harleys there. Its getting very worrying now when I see cars that I owned in the past that were quite new are now classed as 'classics', such as a VW Scirocco 😂😂😂

If you have a look back up the page to Boston Bike Night, the gold FS1E was found by the new owner dumped in a skip. You get barn finds, shed finds but, that is a very good skip find  :o

Another Highland Fling:

Super Cub trip to Kinlochbervie

Supposedly trying to reduce the number of bikes in the shed, I (rather) foolishly ended up buying a 1995 BMW R100 RT Classic, so decided that I might move my CBF600 SA on to a friend nearby who had asked on a few occasions if I might sell it to him.  Having had a few decent runs out on the BMW - including a recent 1200 mile trip down to Yorkshire and Lancashire, I realised that the Honda could go to its new owner, Les who later asked if I fancied a trip down to Kinlochbervie and on to the extreme west point at Sheigra - a place he had had on his 'bucket list' for many years and this would be his first longish ride on his new acquisition.
I elected to take the C125 Super Cub, well outclassed in size and performance by the CBF 600 but with many single track roads with passing places and the World and his wife in hoards of camper vans, I was not too worried about the mis-match - we wouldn't be riding fast anyway.
Ferry tickets bought, bikes checked over and fuelled up, it was time to get up at silly o'clock for the 15 mile ride to the ferry terminal in Stromness and the 6.30 sailing to Scrabster.

Off the boat at just after 8, the initial ride along the north coast was into a head wind but progress was adequate and we stopped for a bacon roll and a drink at a lovely place in Tongue, just before the link road across the Kyle.  We both refuelled in Durness by the Smoo caves, which was 25p per litre CHEAPER than a fellow motorcyclist had paid earlier the same day in Inverness on his ride up.  It cost me £5.50 to brim the 3.7 litre tank on the C125, whereas the 600 had consumed £17.50's worth over the same distance.

Stopping in Sheigra at the end of the road overlooking the Atlantic, Les had at last fulfilled one of his 'long term ambitions' - a result!  As I was sort of 'timekeeper' and bearing in mind that we had the return ferry booked at 7 o'cIock that same evening it transpired that we had already used up about 4 of our 9+ available hours and rather than hammer along a different but longer route back, perhaps it might be more prudent to retrace our steps - the views are stunning whichever way you travel those roads.  This would give us more time to enjoy the ride and include another food stop, so we made once again for that excellent cafe in Tongue.
The C125 has a digital fuel gauge like many modern bikes - with 6 blocks showing full, down to 1 for 'reserve'. This single block eventually starts to flash, and I have yet to find out just how far you can go before the inevitable happens.  As we both carry extra fuel - a whole litre in my case!, I was not concerned about running dry on this relatively new machine, hopefully still having a clean tank.  In the event the last block started flashing about 30 miles before the ferry but I easily managed to get beyond that point and into Thurso to re-fuel and even then, could only get 3.2 litres into the 3.7 litre tank.  So I still haven't managed to ascertain the point at which I might have to walk!  This necessity to carefully plan routes where fuel would be available would not be a challenge for anyone living in more populated areas but we are at the rather quieter, sparsely inhabited northern end of the British Isles!

We still had sufficient time to stop for a coffee at the 'Weigh Inn' at the Scrabster turn off, where we joined a whole group of Czech riders touring on modern Indians - on a dozen or so bikes, before heading along to the Hamnavoe for our return crossing.  All in all, a very pleasant day out, covering just over 250 miles, which is now the furthest I have ridden the C125 in one day and considering the many single track roads with so many pauses in passing places, I'm quite confident that distance could be exceeded if you so wished.

Ian

Out on the two 550/4 mongrels today. Blimey,  it was hot. The only benefit I can see for riding in temperatures like this is that the hot rubber sticks to the hot roads exceptionally well, which made for some great racing. I let Trigger win,  its just easier that way 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lytham WWII Weekend......25 Pounder , Limber and Morris Commercial Quad.

Makes a change from smelly old bikes (for smelly old artillery bits and bobs). Got out on my bike today as it's 6 weeks since my Hernia Operation, and as I just live down the road....why not. My dear old Mum bought me one of these sets when I was a nipper.........who'd have thought I'd grow up to serve as a TA Gunner for 15 years. Certainly not me when I was a raggedy arsed kid !

Great turnout with loads of Families and plenty of locals dressing up in their 1940's gear in the lovely sunshine....and I saw more Sergeants parading in their uniform than the British Army has ever had in it's ranks ! LOL.

Another trip down into the Highlands

A nearby friend,  Leslie who had recently bought my CBF 600 SA8 asked if I fancied another day trip into Caithness and Sutherland sometime.  I'm always up for a ride out and after taking the Honda 350/4 to our annual rally then following that with a trip to our own (very wet!) Dounby Show, I felt that it was the most suitable machine for our proposed trip, so set about fitting a rear rack from David Silver and making brackets to mount my QD top box base plate on it.  This would allow me to put the large Honda top box on, hopefully not having to 'rent space' in the panniers and top box on the Les's CBF.  I decided that rather than get up at some dark ungodly hour for the 06.30 sailing on the Friday, I would avail myself of the Bed and Breakfast option on the MV Hamnavoe the night before.  Leslie would then meet me after breakfast to pair up the intercoms so we could then ride together as soon as the ferry docked at 8 on the Friday morning

[attach=1]

Leaving the ferry we headed out west to take some occasionally well surfaced quiet roads through Forss, south to Westfield, on to Scotscalder and then via Loch Watten across to Wick; I wanted to visit their motorcycle shop, AMS that Les had introduced me to on a previous trip - I was in search of a new waterproof riding jacket.  I had quite a specific set of requirements for this new jacket and wasn't really hopeful of finding one but Paul, the proprietor found exactly the thing for me and Les kindly managed to squeeze my original into a pannier.
Using the fairly quiet A99 we had a very pleasant ride down to Latheron and made a deliberate detour back north and then via Smerral to join the A9 south at Latheronwheel - the quaint little harbour here has picnic tables overlooking the North Sea, where pods of dolphins can often be seen - well worth a visit if you have time when travelling to and from the North coast.

South now on the A9 to Brora via the Berriedale Braes and Helmsdale, where Leslie informed me that he thought that something had just dropped off the back of my bike, so we pulled into a lay-by and had a look around and he noticed that one of my lower 'half clamps' on the rear rack had disappeared.

All entirely my fault as this was a trial run with the new plate attached to the rack, so I hadn't loctited the bolts until I knew it all worked, then they could be tidied up and finish polished - hey ho, that's life!  He kindly offered to go back to where he thought it might be whilst I checked all other fastenings and he found the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' in the middle of the road.  We pressed on having ascertained that everything was still safe with the remaining brackets and stopped as planned at Harry Gow's in Brora to pick up pies and sticky buns as rumbling tums halted our progress.  Fuelled up (bikes too!) a short time later and heading back north to take the narrow road up through Glen Loth and onto Kinbrace - an area sadly overlooked as most folk just hammer up and down the A9, often in some sort of self-imposed hurry.  This road has deteriorated somewhat since I last used it - lots more grass down the middle, favoured by most of the sheep but with care it's still a lovely way to see some great scenery and birdlife.  This was the only rain we had all day and as soon as we joined the Helmsdale/Kinbrace, slightly more major road with a better surface devoid of grass, it became dry again - typical!

[attach=2]

[attach=3]

I wanted to show Les the visitor centre at the Forsinard railway station in the Flow Country so we made a short detour there.  This whole area is of great ecological  importance in that it is the largest expanse of peat bog in Europe, covering some 1500 square miles, continually capturing carbon from the atmosphere.  We struck up a conversation with a couple in a camper van from the Netherlands, also enjoying the impressive visitor centre.  From here it was a very enjoyable ride back to the north coast at Melvich and then along the A836 for our to return to Scrabster, even allowing us yet another coffee stop at the Weigh Inn before catching the 7 pm boat back home.

Waiting in the queue for loading, we were joined by a group of Norwegian motorcyclists on modern 'adventure bikes' mostly BMWs and Triumphs and the 350 seemed to grab their interest - one very knowledgable chap had no idea that people in Orkney were even interested in classic bikes!  We exchanged details and met up with two of them the following day so that I could take them to a couple of my friends classic collections of Kawasakis, Hondas, BMWs and Triumphs - they were astounded to say the least. One of the friends with Kawasaki triples knew some of the contacts of the Norwegian guys and is also into Vintage tractors, just as they are - small World eh?

Leslie seems very pleased with my old CBF, which has only just completed 10,000 miles in its 14 year life and I think the little classic 350 Four is ideally suited to these short one day trips into the fairly unspoilt roads around Sutherland and Caithness and 200 miles is a comfortable distance, allowing time to see many of the areas hidden gems.

They are lovely bikes, a bit on the small side for anyone over 5'8" but they really do handle. The clip-ons are pure agony in town and the dry and grabby clutch are not suited to town work either but out on the open roads they are sublime. The exhaust note is addictive and playing tunes on the gearbox is a must, they thrive on revs like a stroker. I first saw one of these when it came past me when I was on my CB160 on my way to technical college in 1980. When I got there I parked up next to it! I bought this one as a wreck 15 years ago (couldn't afford a decent one!) and restored it over a couple of years.

Went to the Swettenham Arms meet at Swettenham, near Jodrell Bank last night. Some really nice bikes there but spotted a CJ360 from across the car park done in Parakeet Yellow. First glance I thought it was a 400-4 as the tank a similar design so I sauntered over to take a look.

I freely apologise now, I should have taken a pic, which I'll do if I ever see it again. It was a really nice restoration but done 20 years ago, exhaust was original and was completely immaculate, not an ounce of rust on it. I was never a fan of the CJ series, in fact it's my pet hate bike but this was really good. I'm not easily impressed but this did impress me.

Owner never been on this site but I told him what it was and what we do and maybe he'll pop on and post a pic. He has a few of them and also had a 1962 Ariel along with it being ridden by his Dad.

A really nice Velocette there, brand new engine, new cases, new crank, new everything, cost £6500 to build. Even had an eleccy start on it and all the electrics were modern. I'll take a pic of that as well next time.

Meet is every Thursday night if anyone is in the area, get there early as by 9.30 most have gone these days as the nights draw in.

You can always judge a good day out by the amount of mud you bring home on your bike 😂😂😂😂😂
Riding around the edge of The Wash today, as close as you can get without sinking. I've enlarged the last photo to show the Outer Trial Bank, a disaster of a project to store fresh water in a resovoir type construction in The Wash. I was on Millie the 550 Mongrel and Trig was on his 750K6. Probably not the most suitable bikes for the exercise but great fun. I got within 25 yards of home and my throttle cable snapped. 1 only have 1 cable, no return cable so luckily it was only a short push onto the drive.

Just wind the throttle stop in as far as you can and you can limp home at around 20mph or so, better than pushing.

I used a screwdriver under the carb opening arm when mine snapped, mind you I was a long way from home at the time so pushing was not an option.

I'm sure we would have sorted some type of Heath Robinson bodge to get me home. I was just so very lucky it got me so close to the house before it snapped. Graham reckons it's where I was racing him the last 7 miles, it snapped to teach me not to try turning the throttle further than it should go 🤣🤣🤣🤣I was in the lead all the way until the cable snapped. He managed to fly by me 25 yards from the finish line 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Blast to Foulups today, tyres kicked, check, coffee drunk, check, HUGE breakfast induced heart burn, check, bits collected and a scoot home the long way home via Cheddar Gorge for a coffee and to see how many sodding goats can leap out at you mid corner up through the gorge on the way home.

80 odd miles and the soul is fully recharged (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220828/e47f54ebf86cbe7635eb309cd884ba8e.jpg)

After re-balancing the carbs on the 350 using just one vac gauge and a 4 way switchable manifold, I decided to give it a road test around the West Mainland (of Orkney) this morning.  Although it was good before, I can certainly notice the difference from the 4 gauge system.

This is overlooking Rousay from the top of the Hillside Road

Can we not get  few of us to do an organised a trip next year maybe? I'd love to go up there, never been and looks incredible. I nearly did the 500 last year but was put off by the camper van horror stories..

I did the 500 before it became known as the 500….brilliant. Since it became ‘known’ the traffic is horrendous and getting accommodation and shoulder room in the pubs is woeful. Sorry to be a doom munger. It’s great for the Scot’s though.

May is often a good month, weather-wise and accommodation shouldn't be too much of a problem either.  On the way up Travelodges can be reasonable.  The M6/M74/M80 and A9 can be tiring but there are some alternatives on unspoilt back roads.  As you say Sesman, the NC 500 with hoards of campervans and hired Ferraris and Lambos looking for the fastest time have spoilt it rather.
There are quite a few good quality self catering places here in Orkney which can make it more cost effective if folks can share.  I'm sure Johnny and I (plus a great many others up here) can put something together to make it a memorable time,
Ian

It's got way too busy now and some of the locals hate it. Too many people blocking roads, no manners and dumping litter everywhere. The peace and quiet they had before has mostly gone.

Lots of other brilliant roads in Scotland. The North East is excellent,  the A93 for example, or Cairn O'Mount.

Just to expand a bit on what Gareth has said. You won’t find any congestion from Inverness travelling north to Thurso (130miles) quite a nice road this is the road that would take you to the ferry ports. Also the road accross the north coast travelling west is also fine. Travelling along the west coast route either north or south requires a bit of patience as there is quite a bit of single track road. Just don’t be in a hurry else you won’t enjoy it. Get yourselves up and off before the caravans and campervans hit the road. 😜

Just to qualify, I wouldn’t want to discourage anybody from doing it. It’s still a great experience,  but your expectations of clear roads and stress free riding from Applecross to Lock Carron, on to Ullapool and beyond may need some recalibration. Book early, travel early and you won’t be disappointed. It’s just not like it was say 10 years ago, but then again what is?. Me, I’d head for the Massive Central in June….oh, no what have I done😀

Hi,

Not as far north as the Orkney Islands but weather and roads on Syke have been wonderful last week and another week of holiday remaining so fingers crossed for good weather. Been doing the highlands every year for the last 17 years but never been to Orkney (on list to do) but done Outer Hebredies, NC500 (17 years ago when it eas quieter) and much of Scotland from the borders north. Much better and quiter roads than the northwest of England.

If tou're thinking about doing Scotland - do it and you won't regret it  :)

Great views and a lovely bike there, I'm set on going up next year, definitely!

Furthest I've been up is Lommond for weeks mooching  and Edinburgh but that was exibiting at the Scottish bike show some 20 years ago, didnt really see much except a wet grey Edinburgh and a lot of dripping bikers at the show. I do remember being hit in the eye by a bumble bee when I lifted my visor up momentarily, felt like I'd been hit with a golf ball and looked like I'd been hit with a cream egg. Resulted in a shut eye and a black eye like a pound of liver for a week. Didnt really notice much while I was there, I didn't have stereo vision so it might have been nice, I dont know. :o ;D

Swore I'd go back up  ;D

Had a nice day out yesterday, at Oulton Park for the Thundersport Club Bike Championships, not quite MotoGp not even BSB but some good racing still.
The boss and I try to go to as many meetings as possible at Oulton and thoroughly enjoy them.
I'm not a fan of most modern bikes but this caught my eye.

Another bonny day today here in Orkney, so after doing a bit of work on a new shed door in the morning I felt that I had earned a ride out for the afternoon.  I dragged the 'Two wheeled Grey Fergie' out from the garage and had a lovely ride down over the Churchill Barriers to the southern-most tip of the Orkney Mainland at Burwick.  This is a round trip of over 80 miles for me.  Not many folk out as they seemed to be watching something on day-time TV - search me!
Anyway, sorry it's not a single OHC Honda - I'll try better next time!

This is near Burray, overlooking Scapa Flow:

Despite extensive research, I still can't locate the bit that Churchill built - perhaps they should be renamed 'The Italian Prisoners of War Barriers'?

Looks like the side stand is hitting the No2 exhaust pipe and there's a drain hose incorrectly routed if that's staining on the same pipe. Best remedy both of those before they become a bigger problem.

Ever visited Carsington Water near Matlock Bath? recommend it, really nice. Take yer trunks and have a go at paddle boarding  ;D ;D

Just been and checked and stand isn't touching and I can't get it to no matter how hard I wiggle ( it obviously had at one point as there was a tiny dent - but this looks old) ........ rerouted a rogue drain pipe :)

Carsington is lovely but I don't think I need to inflict me in trucks attempting paddle boarding !!!  ;D

Thanks

Come over here the water is a steady 38 deg in the fish ponds! Its like walking into a warm bath!

Makes netting at night really rather pleasant. It beats netting in the UK, where you generally ahve two pairs of tracksuit bottoms on, a couple of t shirts, a hoody a cap and a dry suit and neoprene gloves. Generally in the ice!!

Dont mind it somuch over here, shorts, vest and a pair of crocs.................Nice ;D

On the down side...............wish I had a bike here, I'm getting cold turkey already :(

Weather is unusually (compare to last years) bad, cold.. hope for some better days still this year!

I ground the end of my main stand lug in a chamfer, I was a bit insane when I was younger. On corners I could feel my feet being pushed up as the footrests were being pushed up by the road. The hero blobs were ground flat in the end.

I've gven up replacing the blobs on the vfr, I was getting through a set a year at one point, I just live with the chamfer now, besides it's kind cool in a blatently teenager sort of way. ;) ;D It was always street cred as a nipper to have no chicken strips on the rear tyre and if you got yer pegs down, nevr mind a knee, your were a legend. Obviously there were instances of ambition out weighing ability and a few get off's but it was all part lof growing up. 8)

My left shoulder would argue now though!..........thinking on, can you get new shoulders? ;D ;D ;D

Oosshh, Dave thats crap mate! i'm lucky enough to not have had it yet, being a type 1 diddlybetic it can be a bit sketchy for me!

To be honest its kind of just been a standard North of England, wet and breezy day, nothing too mental apart from a brief spell when it was howling for about an hour. Some places have been smashed to bits with estimates coming in around $260billion in Florida I heard  on't wireless earlier.
I snorted down the phone whilst talking to a mate in Charleston about 50 miles east of here on the coast, who's also from 'oop Norf,' when he said "We 'avent 'ad much, in fact, I've witnessed worse wind in Wetherspoons"........ ;D
Coffee down the wrong hole in me lung and a 'snort, burp, coughing fit' was me for the next 30 seconds.
He drops em in just at the right moment the sod ;D

I had to call him back ;D ;D ;D.

Not gator chops but they do like a halibut pellet the buggers, the dopey black one was found on the motorway just roaming about a couple of years ago, Luna. The white one is such a sweetheart bless her. Kiya. Always by your side and always looking at you . She's a pals dog and as good as gold, I'm looking after her for a dew weeks while he harvests and gets things squared away at his dad's farm.
Luna on the other hand is as thick as mince and just bobbles about all daylooking dazed.
A wicked pair and really good company when you're on your own as I am...........great listeners ;D ;D

Great ride out today, really quite warm for early October.
I'm not into Harleys at all and know sod all about them but this 1951 was an absolute stunner. There was also a very, very nice VFR 400R, on a K plate, so 1993 is or there abouts. I was on Kitty the 500 K1 and Graham took the 750 K6.

I never got Harley's either Julie until I hired one for a week when I was on holiday in California 7 years ago and then I got it. They are lovely bikes for the environment they were built for, long straight roads on a hot, sunny day with a long distance to travel at cruising speeds. I don't get it over in the UK though and especially on our tight roads and weather with all the cleaning they require to keep them looking nice. Each to their own though, my Jota can be a top heavy handful on bumpy, tight UK roads as well!

It's been some time but found the time to get the 750 out of the back of the garage. Fired up almost instantly run ok apart from a slight miss if I give it a first full at about 4000rpm.

We've been out riding a lot recently, making the summer last as long as possible.
Out on the Mongrels today, I had an indicator lens fall off somewhere on our travels😂😂😂😂 but other than that a perfect ride with a lovely breakfast en route.

I just couldn't resist 😁😁😁
The sun was shining, it was a very pleasant 17° so I took Kitty for a lovely long ride.
Looks like weather will break within the next couple of days so probably the last ride on Kitty before she goes into winter storage. This year I've done well over 2000 miles on Kitty, about the same on Millie the Mongrel and about 1500 miles on the CD250u, so they are all well and truly ridden and not hidden 😊😊😊. What a great summer it's been for riding. I'm already looking forward to next year. The little CD250u will be the winter hack and I will have no excuses for not doing the housework now 😂😂😂

Lovely bike Julie. I'm envious of you getting out for a ride on a beautiful day.
I've just moved house and the new one needs lots of work to do it up. My bikes are in storage while I work on the house and a dreaded concrete garage. ☹

No riding for me at the moment.  😢

You mean Monyash? great roads in that vicinity. There's a section of road near Crowdecote that reminds me of that hill in San Francisco that they used in films a lot. The one with the tight bends coming down a steep hill.

There's a good cafe in Monyash that my son says makes great bacon sarnies, never stopped myself, I'm in the groove when I'm near there and just want to find as many corners as I can so I can get my knee down. Silly I know but bends have always done it for me.

All good it would seem - rear brake needed a quick adjustment but that was it

Cold but dry - I’ll take that :) and apparently I missed a few “fours” yesterday - a couple of 750’s and a 500 with twin front disks .... anyone one here I wonder

@LaverdaDave, good luck with the I AM test.. I took (and passed!) the car one earlier in the year. After month s of dry weather as the test started th e heavens opened and I had an hour of torrential rain and near - zero visibility in the spray to drive in,including a particularly unpleasant A1 section.  I was pooped by the end of it - it's surprising how much you concentrate, and even more so with an examiner in tow.

I can't recommend the IAM highly enough and especially the Middlesex Advanced Motorcyclists who got me through it. After 43 years of continuous riding bikes I thought I knew it all until I joined the IAM. Unbelievable what you learn from the experts and how it all works in practice. I now ride quicker (make progress as they call it) by going slower but constantly thinking about where I am and what is up ahead. I'm now 61 and wish I'd learnt this 30 years ago!

I did mine in 2007.

5 PM on a Friday from the McDonalds car park next to the Madejski Stadium in south Reading. A mile of stationary dual carriageway and then one junction of the M4 ( also mostly stationary). Then the examiners favourite north Basingstoke country lanes.

Two minor infringements:
1. Not moving back into lane 1 quickly enough after a motorway overtake.
2. Not accelerating fast enough out of a 30 limit into a National.

I can live with them.

Well done Dave - the headache will pass too!  I did mine way back in early November 1983 - pissing down with rain and wet leaves everywhere (in Lancashire).  The examiner - a police motorcyclist, made me feel at ease by turning up complaining that he had a wet crutch and needed fuel at the first opportunity!
I must say I got far more enjoyment from my riding after doing that test plus the training leading up to it and would recommend any serious motorcyclist to do it asap.  At 73, perhaps I ought to have a refresher.

Ian

Anybody recollect? Think it was national recognition. Got the Silver but never got round to doing theGold. Curry’s can give quite a hangover 🤣

Oh I can just see mine now if I went for it.

1. Got the knee down on roundabouts a little too quickly
2. Giving an obscene hand gesture to the car driver hogging the middle lane on the motorway whilst passing in the inside lane, just to show them where they should be driving.
3. Standing up to wave at fellow motorcyclists so you make sure they see you and wave back.
4. Shaking the head at Harley riders for their choice of motorcycle.

Feel free to add any others I've missed.

Just thought of an addition to No.3

3. Standing up to wave at fellow motorcyclists so you make sure they see you and wave back. Maybe consider just using one arm in future.

I'd probably get too angry at the course leader for a Road Rage course.  ;D ;D ;D

TBH, I don't do No.1 UNLESS I'm in the mood.

I do do No.2 as they piss me off with their lack of thought and bad driving skills. Most times I do it in lane 3 and do it with my left hand as it's easier than using my right.

I don't do No.3 at all, maybe a hand lift if I see them.

I sometimes do No.4 just to annoy them, whilst passing them at a great rate of knots, just so they can see what a real motorcycle looks like  ;D ;D

Congratulations and well done on passing the IAM test, it isn't easy and I don't much like to admit it but I FAILED my first attempt! I took mine about 4 years ago after a 10+ year layoff from riding so I thought that taking the training and test seemed like a good idea. My feeble excuse is that the frost in the morning put me off. I too took the test in November but it was properly cold with a ground frost, the examiner offered me the option of cancelling but I went ahead. I think too much of my brain capacity was taken up by worrying about the bike sliding away from me, I ended up breaking a 30 mph limit out of Grantham on the B1174, a very long road and I obviously missed the 30 sign and ended up convincing myself it must be a 40 limit so I rode at 35, splitting the difference in a forlorn hope until I spotted the 40 sign, shit. Took the test again the next spring and passed this time, a nice sunny warm ride which was actually really enjoyable. I have to say the difference in the examiners riding style was interesting, the first chap was a retired police rider and was sometimes so far back he was hard to spot in the mirrors. The second guy was a serving officer and he was tight up on my tail for most of the ride.

The more I see your bike the more I like the black body finish.
I knew a Nut Brown frame would look wrong with black bodywork.

Well done braving the wind chill in Matlock Simon. 👍👍👍

Had a good 40 mile blast on the tourer this morning. Nice dry roads for a change. It’s great to get out after the shite spell of weather has passed Actually stopped by a fellow forum member but he wasn’t home. I suppose he has better things to do than sit about waiting for unscheduled visitors. Helping a friend in need I believe.

Seems a regular ride. If you are riding back through Darley Dale on a Saturday morning, call into our shop so I can admire that beast! Opposite the large engineering foundry. We are Fabric & Furnishings Solutions.

Nice one Simon. Sitting here contemplating a run on the tourer. 8 Celsius here.

Buy a heated Jacket, you won't look back. Santa sent me one last Christmas, deep joy :D. In 40+ years of riding I've tried everything, newspaper, plastic bags, layers so thick it was difficult to get my jacket on etc. The heated jacket is an amazing piece of kit with three heat settings (I've only ever used the lowest). You can either connect it to your bike battery or buy a small rechargeable battery that fits into the jacket, I use the bike battery. I think mine is a Keiss. Get the full length sleeve version, the short sleeve leaves your arms cold.
I bought a pair of heated gloves last January. They are RST's and were on offer with 50% off @£80. These are amazing as unlike heated handlebar grips the gloves are heated all over and importantly at the back of the hand and individual fingers. Again I have only ever used them on the lowest setting that warm enough and I got nearly three hours from one charge of the battery. You don't realise how debilitating it is riding in the cold and how it affects your concentration (and bladder  :o). Being warm is being happy and enjoying the ride. I wish I'd discovered heated bike clothing years ago!

I've got as full set of heated clothing. The jacket is the controller for them all, the gloves plug into the sleeves of the jacket and the pants also do the same as the waist. The whole thing runs off the battery by a simple connector that will just pull away if you ever have an accident or like me just forget to disconnect. The gloves are good, heats the back of the hand and fingers and now I've also got some heated grips that should be great as I found my palms getting chilly on really cold days, by cold I mean riding in minus temps. The problem with the trousers are they are more like cowboy chaps, they work ok but first time I wore them without anything on my legs, every time I pulled up at lights and put my feet down the velcro straps pulled the hair off my legs, very uncomfortable. I now wear them with long johns and they are fine.

Or you could just use your car with the heater on Max!

We have a car but I detest driving it. Endless traffic delays, nowhere to park and if you can it costs a fortune and when you walk back to it you find it dinged or someone has parked really close you can't open the door! Weekend traffic is like a 24hour rush hour. The wife drives nearly everyday, god knows how she does that, a 12 mile drive to work takes her over one hour! I would rather bike it, walk it or go on the train or bus. I am lucky living in London in some ways (choice of transport) but not in others (sheer weight of traffic and selfish diots in cars). I used to love driving a car, can't stand it anymore, a bike it is for me.

That's why we moved to sunny Lytham St Annes when I retired !

It's full of old fogeys who are in no rush to go anywhere....for every car you let out of a side road, there are two others who will do the same for you.

I rarely drive anywhere at weekends or Bank Holidays as I can go wherever I want on almost empty roads during the week when everybody else is at work......same with the bike.

I may be daft.....but I'm not stupid ! LOL.

Dave, thanks for info regarding heated clothing and others who contributed. I have had no experience whatsoever regarding heated clothing but liking the positive feedback regarding the items. I take it when you speak about a heated jacket it is an under garment with touring jacket on top? Ad fo4 the bladder problem I have sorted that out with 200mg ibuprofen taken before riding, it’s the difference between 2 hours and 6 hours in my case.🤫

I think we are in for a bit of the 'white stuff' for a while but I might get out on the C125 when it clears.  Saw Johnny out on the Pan last Saturday and just missed him - I think he was after a look at the 550 from James  8)

Yep, it's an undergarment Johnny. I really wish I had bought heated clothing years ago, it's night and day in term of comfort. You can really go the whole hog and buy heated socks, trousers, vest, gloves etc for now though the jacket and gloves suit me because I don't tend to ride when it's really cold. Good tip about the ibuprofen, I'll try that I might next long, cold trip👍.

A lovely little racer you've assembled there.

Memories, my dad drove his friend and racer around when I was really young with race kitted honda twins of small capacity.

I think it looks really and bet it sounds nice too.

I was given this bike in boxes, reportedly raced in South Africa, it was rolling chassis and engine stripped to component parts, no bodywork. I built it for Sprinting and later built up a 350 engine. All this was done over 20 years ago.

My 21 year son Sam has passed all the bike tests so can now ride unlimited capacity (don’t get me started about how ridiculous having to take the same tests twice is) Sam was born after I built this bike, he asked if he could get it out and running again to have a ride, he’s hooked, he has modern bikes, race bikes, but loved the raw feel, said it felt like he was doing 100mph at 30mph 😂

Well I suspect this will be the last run out in 2022 if the weather forecast is to be believed

Good clean after a nice run which certainly blew the cobwebs away
