Title: Reinstalling cam shaft.
Post by: billdn on June 06, 2022, 10:55:24 AM
Rebuild underway and now camshaft won't quite go in. I'm aware that lower end of camchain can sometimes be not quite fully on crank end and needs to be "wiggled" about to seat correctly,  well been wiggling for days. Any tips ??
I can get the camshaft in to the point where the last cam lobe will not quite fit under the cam sprocket but it's so close 😠. Persuasion only jams the flanges that bolt to sprocket.

I put mine in twice because the first time I forgot the washer that fits next to the sprocket, as far as I recall. I remember it being a bit fiddly but not that bad. You don't have the tensioners in??? You could also try pulling up on the chain with the sprocket just to eyeball the situation.

Tensioner out as gives bit more wiggle room, just needs an extra 5mm or so. Turned engine on side to look from below but not a lot to be seen.
Offering up sprocket in chain and can see that it's just short.
Just keep wiggling I suppose.  ;)

I found it easier to fit the camshaft with the gear loose then when in position fit the bolts - give you some chain slack.

That's the way it should be done Ted, it's too tight otherwise.

I was always challenged by the cylinder number order number when the case was inverted - I ended up using a marker pen so I knew what side/end was what when casings are upside down for assembly & split etc.
