Title: Do you really throw your harness in the dishwasher?
Post by: alexdecker on June 08, 2022, 09:56:13 AM
So… about to clean my harness. Several people have written in here that they just threw it in the dishwasher, and it came out like new.

I can't figure out if people are joking, or if this is the proper way to go about it? I mean… doesn't water come in everywhere? How much drying time?

Yep, totally recognised way of cleaning looms. Just put it on a hot wash and it'll come up lovely.

Yep, this what I did. Also cleaned the connectors in the ultrasonic and treated them to some contact  cleaner.

If you have a temperature setting, set it at 70degc.

Ultrasonic cleaner @ 70C in a soap solution - came up like new. My only concern might be water trapped within the loom soaking the various internal connections over time - I guess hanging it vertically for a couple of days in an airing cupboard would sort that.

What particularly impressed me was the plugs - which were grubby inside / around the spades - but now like new.

Wish I had known about this back in 2007, I spent hours with WD40, rags, small files, and Brillo pads cleaning up every connector on my harness, then annointing them with dielectric grease.
I will know better in future.

Cheers

If you do use the dishwasher make sure you run a cleaning cycle afterwards and before the o/h gets home!

Last time I cleaned an original loom (CB500K0) in my dishwasher, the connector covers became very opaque (as image)...water temperature or dishwasher tablet could be the problem?

I have a brand new dishwasher sat in the shed that's been there since 1989, I kid you not. Intended to be used when kitchen was refitted but space was tight so we didn't bother. I was going to bin it or even offer it to the local TV company in case they wanted a period dishwasher for a TV show but I may just keep it and use it in the garage.

I have no idea what make it is and only bought it because I was working for Comet one night and when I got back to the depot they were having a sale of all the slightly damaged in transit goods and the dishwasher was dirt cheap.

Al, interesting that (opaqueness). My Honda loom connectors stayed clear / original, and yet the secondary loom connectors (I’d made up for electronic ignition) have gone cloudy. (70C ultrasonic wash in commercial detergent solution).

I’m therefore guessing aftermarket connector covers are the problem?

You had a dolly peg! We just had to wash in a dry dust bowl left in the road by the horse and carts...............You were lucky! ;D

And so on...............................
