For the things you can't do on line try contacting your local DVLA office

when you get sent your tax reminder you have a reference number which is what i used to sorn a bike last week but seen as the bike hasn't been on the road for 30 years i guess he hasn't had a reminder.   Probably best give dvla a call on monday not that they will be very helpfull!!

You do not need to SORN a vehicle manufactured before 2001. I read this in a pamphlet given to me when I received a new V5.

I do not think this is correct,, i have two bikes sorned both older than 2001.

From the DVLA website

SORN isn’t needed if:
•you no longer have the vehicle and Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) have been informed
•your insurance company writes the vehicle off
•you take the vehicle abroad permanently
•you apply for a refund of vehicle tax and don’t keep the vehicle
•your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998
•you are keeping the vehicle off the road and untaxed for less than 14 days

I'm surprised DVLA are saying it needs sorn if its uninsured.
If the vehicle wasn't taxed before 98 then no need to SORN.

My apologies, it seems Northern Ireland has different rules.

"Are there any exceptions?

You can only escape the compulsory insurance requirement if you declare your vehicle as officially off-road. To do this, you must fill out a Statutory Off Road Notification (Sorn).
Anyone who has not used their vehicle and not had it taxed since the Sorn regulations came into force in January 1998 is also exempt.

This will mostly apply to classic cars but if you own a vehicle that has been taxed since then you will have to buy insurance unless you declare it Sorn.

The law will apply in England, Scotland and Wales but not in Northern Ireland."

Not sure on the dates but if your vehicle has not been taxed for a few years you do not have to sorn it, until you take it off the road after you next tax it. I have a kit car and several bikes that do not need sorn because they aint been on the road for years
