Title: New member looking to buy 1974 cb750
Post by: 400/4Russ on March 08, 2013, 08:21:44 PM
Hello, my name is Russell & I am thinking of buying a cb750 to restore.  I have restored a few bikes before ( 2 stroke Suzuki's).

I know very little about sohc honda's.  this bike is advertised locally to me in Northern Ireland & I am going to look at it soon.

It is advertised as a 1974 & the number plate is from 1974 so I assume its a uk bike, would that make it a K2 model?

I have hopefully attached a few photos for you to have a look at & welcome any advice on identifying what model it is & what not so obvious parts are incorrect & hard to obtain.

If someone could also give me a rough idea of its value that would be a great help too!

Many thanks

Russell

Hello Russell, and welcome to the forum, i have seen some of your other restorations on the Suzuki GT'S on the Kettleclinick forum of which i'm also a member,

it's a nice looking Honda in the photos and by looking at it i would say its a K2,

the speedo & rev counter are the wrong way round, it should be speedo on the left & rev counter on the right,

also the rims are non standard they look to be alloy rather than chrome, exhaust is non standard 4 into 1, should be HM341'S 4 into 4,

i can't really see any other non standard parts with out more detailed photos,

theres a really nice CB750 K1 for sale on ebay at the moment if i had some spare cash and room i would buy have a look cheers Mick.

Hi Russell and welcome
Nice looking bike I two would say it's a k2.
I would love a kettle but they are now silly money so when I eventually finish my gold bike I will be on the look out for a T500.

Thanks for pointing out the Valley Green bike Mick you just burst my bubble   :'(
I hope it goes for more than that as it seems to be a similar standard to mine.I may have to splash out a bit more now :D

Mick

Hi Mick i'm sure it will go for a lot more  ;), i love the Candy Ruby Red hondas but i think the Valley Green is the best colour and you don't see many decent ones over here a part from yours and this one  ;) cheers Mick.

Hi Russ,

it looks like a UK K2 (post the frame & engine No.) The dash board is a K4
K2 had:-  Flash,Oil,Neut,Beam  K4:- Flash,Oil, Neutral,Beam.

If you ask me the classic market is booming. If something comes up you have to strike. Just my perception but what do others think?

Don't know about booming as money is tight for most of us, but I certainly wouldn't hang about if the right bike came up and I was in the market. I mean even if it turned out to be a clunker, as long as the price was right it would be worth it for spares bearing in mind the price of those too!

That's an awful feeling when you miss out like that - if only etc.....

Having been a victim of thinking about purchases that seemed no brainers before, I was looking at a 400/4 in January. Saw  it on eBay at 11pm that had only just been listed / thought - no be sensible. Woke up with it on my mind 3 in the morning. I bit the bullet and bought it as a buy it now item. After a 100m drive the bike was luckily definitely worth it! I was also told a guy had arranged to see it even before my bid

I now also keep the make it or litterally break it scenario in my mind with bikes.

I'd agree on this, probably cause the 'new' models offer less perspective for some/many...
And why spend like 15K on a bike that only 'looks' old?
OTOH are the prices for (used) spares raising as well...

(Even the ST1100 Pan-European scene starts to boom now, where the concept/model has grown >20 years...)

I hold with some of those comments....if it's definitely what you're after, then you should chase it down sooner rather than later.

If you are undecided.....then your mind gets made up for you as someone else buys it.....or if it's still there then you may get a better cost that makes it more of a possibility.

That Suzuki 550 is a nice bike.....first real bike I rode and it was my elder sister's boyfriend's bike that he let me have a run out on......I had just a moped at the time and the 550 felt so unbelievably fast, and oh-soooo addictive.....so much so that I don't think it's let up still... :)

Hello Russell and the rest of the forum. It's a small world, isn't it? I'm the guy who bought the 1974 CB750. I did a deal on £1275 and was origianlly going to cafe racer it after my 79 Bonnie semi-custom project I'm currently on. Having had time to have a good look I can report the following:
It is still on the original green log book and was originally registered to an address in Ballymena. It has had three further owners, all in the County Antrim area.
It was supplied with Akront alloy rims as an optional extra - these look original and still have the makers transfers on them. They are in very good condition and will polish up well.
The clock mounts are replacements and probably accounts for the clocks being the wrong way round.
The frame is in great condition for it's age and generally the bike looks well cared for. It is complete apart from the exhausts and centre stand (any members selling same??).
It started and ran well when I went to see it but I am damned if I can get it to run now. Could this be anything to do with me ordering the wrong battery? (+ and - the wrong way round) so I have suspended the battery from the outside of the frame.
The paintwork will need resprayed (still deciding what colour... Candy Gold, Planet Blue or Candy Red... or maybe metallic off white just because I think it would look really great).
Anyway, the carbs probably need stripped and balanced but I have promised not to start another project before the last one is finished.
I have decided it's too good to cafe racer so will fettle and keep original. Russell, when the weather turns and you fancy a coffee PM me and we will hook up.- I'm in Holywood.
Best regards to all - Mark

Hi Mark,

I am glad your not going to cafe it as it too good a bike to do that with!  To me the bike deserves a full nut & bolt restoration.

There is not many early 70s cb750s about in NI especially those that have their original registration numbers,

Keep us updated with your progress with plenty of pics etc.

cheers

Russell
