Hi Chaps.
Putting carbs back together. I have 3 floats sitting at 21mm and 1 sitting at 22.5mm. Am I right in assuming I just adjust the little brass tab in the centre of the float arm to take up the difference ?.
Ta in advance
Julie

Julie,
The float height for the F2 is 21mm and yes adjust the height with the little bras tab in the middle.
Be gentle with them and make sure the tab is just touching the little pin in the cantre of the valve and both floats are level.
A bit messy but time well spent.
Regards,
-
Thanks Paul.

Your welcome.
Are you any good with backs ;)
-
Pretty good with backs Paul. Mind you, all that fiddling with those little bits and pieces on my carbs have made my hands crampy, I don't know how you chaps manage with big hands, must be a right nightmare ;D ;D ;D
-
Patience is the key.
Back gone beyond that, in for surgery in March on a prolapsed disc.
The pain in my legs is unbelievable hopefully back to normal for the spring fingers crossed.
:)
-
Usually a very successful and straight forward procedure Paul. Hope all goes well and I'm sure you will be up and running in no time at all.

Julie
Your not alone yes crampy fingers when messing around with carbs no matter what bike especially when its cold.
Good luck

That's what kitchens were meant for... Warm, near the kettle, good lighting........
-
Spend some time on them Julie, check and check again as the time is a tenth of having the aggro of taking them off again.
-
I have checked so often today Paul I'm now going cross eyed ::) ::). Thing are looking hopeful, haven't got any bits left over and I didn't have to resort to the hammer which makes a change for me ;D ;D ;D. Fiddly job but a nice job to do though. Will see if she fire's up in a couple of weeks before I start singing my own praises.

Some people set the float heights at 22mm ! >:(
It's worth checking the actual fuel levels in the bowls once they are all assembled to the rack and before re-fitting them.
This should verify that the float adjustments you made are accurate.
You can make a diy level gauge from a modified float bowl drain plug and some clear tubing.
There is no Honda data for the fuel level required but all four should be the same when measured from the joint face.
-
Before you finish make sure that the tiny pin on the float valve actually moves and is spring loaded, sometimes a sticky one can be freed with a dose of carb cleaner.
When setting the float level the "Tang" should be just touching the pin and not depressing it at all
-
Well, I have checked the float levels, re adjusted them, checked again and again and again. I think I will leave them alone now for the weekend and then fit them on the bike Monday.........after checking them again I suppose ;D ;D ;D
-
setting the level is a pain,if you do it with the carbs in normal running position, its VERY tricky not to compress the little plunger,
if you invert the carbs,so the needle sits on the top of the fuel inlet, maybe its easier, either way,its a pain,
good luck
and I am sure all your hard work will be worthwhile

After a few goes at this procedure I found what I think is a reliable way to set the float heights !??
If you hold the rack of carbs "on end" the floats will not compress the valve springs.
If the hinge pins are a bit loose in their posts a small piece of tape will stop them escaping.
Tilting the assembly slightly brings the tabs into light contact with the pins so you can gauge each float in turn.
I made a plastic height gauge from an old container, a bit like a bridge in shape with a 21(22?) mm cutout.

Basically, that's similar to how I got there in the end. I found it impossible with the carbs sitting on their top side, the floats were pushing on the valve springs and I just could not see what I was doing. I laid the carbs down so the hinge pins were at the top and the floats dangling down. I made a template, 21mm, out of cardboard and adjusted the tab as necessary. After that I checked to make sure both floats were level. Bloody fiddly job, needed superdooper eyesight, loads of lighting and plenty of cuppa's. ;D ;D ;D

I found exactly the same as Clem, working with the carbs on end proved the easiest way. I used small pieces of masking tape to stop pins dropping out.
I made a template from a piece of an old plastic carton. I think there is a post or a link in a post on these forums somewhere that suggests that.
I also used a workmate to hold the carbs in an upright position. Rest the carbs on the metal frame part then gently clamp to hold in place.

Probably like teaching yer granny to suck eggs here Julie, but please make sure you wear eye protection if you're skooshing carb cleaner about.
It's like when you peel one of those wee oranges, a stream of juice ALWAYS finds your eye, and it bloody nips too! :D

Yes, it is pretty evil stuff, luckily none in my eyes !!!. It is the BEST nail varnish remover I have ever come accros though, you chaps probably don't have that problem though ::) ::) ::)

Hi Chaps
Just a quick update. Iv'e put the carbs back on, after checking the float heights for the zillionth time !!!!. Have adjusted them as far as possible and will now have to wait till I get the rest of her back together before firing her up. Hopefully all should be ok though ::) ::)
