The dam thing still leaks.  Just been out for a quick 20 mile blast and come back to find small amounts of oil on the fins. Guess its gonna be head off to check the o rings and a new head gasket.

Thanks for all the great advice. Little bit of an update for you. Yesterday I took the cam cover off removed the pucks which looked to be sealed very well and re torqued the head bolts. I first set the torque settings to the lower value quoted in the book and went through every nut which took about 1/8 of a turn before it clicked. This is telling  me its taken a little settling In and hopefully it should hold a good seal now. Gonna road test this afternoon and see how it goes.

I remember taking my time when torquing the head bolts down after the engine rebuild but maybe some heat and running in has ensettled things which require a re torque. It an easy enough job but might have to wait till Monday as I wanted to take the bike to BMAD this weekend.

CB500/550 / Oil leak advice??
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:52:12 AM »
Hello all.  I'm after some advice regarding an oil leak from the head gasket. I've recently rebuilt the engine and been on the road for 200 miles but seem to have got an oil leak from the head gasket. I don't think it's the pucks as the oil only appears on the fin below the head gasket but I will check the pucks by lifting the rocker cover.  I'm thinking three options.
1. A slight tweak of the head bolts, risky I know but an easy option.
2. Lift the head and replace head gasket and o rings however it s a new one only 200 miles ago.
3. Lift head, skim head taking minimum off and replace with new gasket and o rings.

Your thoughts would be great fully received. Thanks in advance.

Jim

CB500/550 / More electrical questions??

Hello all and welcome to my new nightmare!!  I've had some intermittent  problems with the starter motor but its now totally dead. I've put a screwdriver across the starter solenoid and it spins great. I've put a couple of wires from the battery into the solenoid control wires and it spins great. The switch seems to be working ok but when I put a volt meter on the 2 wires leading to the solenoid I,m only getting between 6-8 volts  which isn't enough to operate the solenoid. I've checked the earths and all wires look good but don't know what to try next?  Any ideas anyone??

I've been through all my earth connections previously and all seem good. The rectifier could of been down for a while.  Thanks for advice.

I think I,ve sorted it!! Turns out to be the rectifier. Bolted a new one on and getting over 14v going into the battery which is better than what I had previously. Thanks or all the advice given:-))

I took the whole casing with inner coil (Magnetic bit) and ouuter ac coils to a guy who rewinds these things for a living so sure knows more then me.  He put an ohm meter all over it and said all the figures came back as what he would expect and there was no problem with it.  I have put it back together and still have only 11.5 v max at 4000rpm.  i've tried getting some readings in ac from the three yellow wires but not with much success but i may be doing this wrong.  Can someone point me in the right direction to test the ac output correctly?

i'm also thinking i should check the dc supply to the inner coil(magnetic bit)?

Thanks for your help.

I've gone through all the connections and everything seems in very good condition. I've taken the stator to a specialist who has looked at it and put a meter on it and he thinks there is nothing wrong with the stator at all.   Where can I go from here and what should I test next?

Ok thanks Bryan. Electrics I really have problems understanding. I have tested again with a dc supply going in and seem to be getting different figures. 10v, 15v, 2vac. What should I expect to get?

Correction. I wasn't testing it correctly. I've tested pairs of yellow wires and only seem to be getting 1.5v ac when revving it to 4000rpm. I'm thinking this is duff and need to be rewound. What voltages should I expect?

I have an electrical problem which I think could lead to the alternator but electrics isn't my strong point so I,m looking for some help.  I've checked across the battery terminals with the bike running and I can only get 11.5 volts max at 4000rpm.  I then disconnected the plug which come from the alternator into the left side casing with the 3 yellow wires.  I put the multimeter on ac voltage and while the bike was running I tested each yellow wire with + terminal while - terminal was to earth. I don't get any readings. Am I testing this correctly? If so does this mean my alternator is duff.

That's a very good thought as I have painted the engine.  The other problem I'm having is an intermittent fault with the starter button. I don't think it's a faulty switch/button  but could be a loose connection somewhere.

Thanks or the info lobo, all advise is gratefully  received. I've cleaned all the contacts this morning and checked the condition of the positive and earth cables which seem pretty good. I also taken the starter motor apart and spun up the centre part (not sure of the technical term) in the lathe giving it some emery cloth to clean the surfaces.  When all back together it seems to be better but I will see how it fairs over time.
