CB500/550 / Oil leak advice??
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:52:12 AM »
Hello all.  I'm after some advice regarding an oil leak from the head gasket. I've recently rebuilt the engine and been on the road for 200 miles but seem to have got an oil leak from the head gasket. I don't think it's the pucks as the oil only appears on the fin below the head gasket but I will check the pucks by lifting the rocker cover.  I'm thinking three options.
1. A slight tweak of the head bolts, risky I know but an easy option.
2. Lift the head and replace head gasket and o rings however it s a new one only 200 miles ago.
3. Lift head, skim head taking minimum off and replace with new gasket and o rings.

Your thoughts would be great fully received. Thanks in advance.

CB500/550 / More electrical questions??
« on: April 08, 2013, 02:56:13 PM »
Hello all and welcome to my new nightmare!!  I've had some intermittent  problems with the starter motor but its now totally dead. I've put a screwdriver across the starter solenoid and it spins great. I've put a couple of wires from the battery into the solenoid control wires and it spins great. The switch seems to be working ok but when I put a volt meter on the 2 wires leading to the solenoid I,m only getting between 6-8 volts  which isn't enough to operate the solenoid. I've checked the earths and all wires look good but don't know what to try next?  Any ideas anyone??

CB500/550 / Testing alternator
« on: April 02, 2013, 07:39:33 PM »
I have an electrical problem which I think could lead to the alternator but electrics isn't my strong point so I,m looking for some help.  I've checked across the battery terminals with the bike running and I can only get 11.5 volts max at 4000rpm.  I then disconnected the plug which come from the alternator into the left side casing with the 3 yellow wires.  I put the multimeter on ac voltage and while the bike was running I tested each yellow wire with + terminal while - terminal was to earth. I don't get any readings. Am I testing this correctly? If so does this mean my alternator is duff.

CB500/550 / Starter motor testing?
« on: March 05, 2013, 07:51:10 PM »
I've had a problem with the starter motor struggling to turn the bike over. Fitted a brand new battery today and was hoping this would help but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've stripped and cleaned the starter motor and the brushes are within tolerance as stated in the book. After reassembly it still doesn't appear any better so I've measured the voltage drop when the starter is operated and I,m getting a drop of about 3volts.  Does this seem to high a voltage drop or would you expect this value? Any other advice or suggestions would be great fully received.

CB500/550 / Engine rebuild, what's gone wrong?
« on: February 25, 2013, 01:13:00 PM »
Hello all. After rebuilding the bottom end of my 550 it was time to fire it up today and see how it sounded. The answer was Terrible!!  Initial problem was the starter wasn't working but that could be a flat battery or missed a wire somewhere. I decided to kick it over and she fired up pretty much straight away but I have a terrible noise from the kickstart shaft. When I start to give it revs the kick start is jumping/rattling and the noise gets louder. Any ideas what I've done wrong?

CB500/550 / Ultrasonic cleaning??
« on: January 10, 2013, 05:48:26 PM »
Hi.  I'm looking for advice on ultrasonic cleaning for some cb550 cards. The carbs are pretty good and the bike went well before I stripped it so I'm reluctant to change any settings or fiddle to much as I'm no expert with carbs. They are a little dirty and could do with a clean before refitting and I'd like advice on ultrasonic cleaning. How much for a set of 550 cards? Do the carbs need to be broken down?  How good is ultrasonic cleaning? Any hints would be great fully received.

CB500/550 / MOT Questions for 1976 cb550 cafe project.
« on: December 30, 2012, 03:02:49 PM »
Hello all.  I'm currently messing about with a cb550 f1 in the depth of the garage and thinking of making a cafe racer.  I've been looking at pictures online of other projects and getting some great ideas for my project but I,m not sure how the MOT process will limit my build.  I would like to remove all the indicators front and rear just leaving headlight and rear light with brake light. Would this pass an MOT and is it road legal?

Tricks & Tips / Piston ring clamps..
« on: November 24, 2012, 07:48:57 PM »
currently rebuilding a cb550 f1 engine and got the the stage of replacing the barrells today.  I don't have a set of piston ring clamps small enough for these pistons and didn't want to wait a few days while i ordered some so i set about making some from a bit of plastic.   I cut up an old ice cream container into strips which wrapped around the piston rings and then used a cable tie to secure it in place.  So simple so cheap and worked a treat.  Thought i'd share it as it may help someone else out one day.

« on: November 07, 2012, 12:53:27 PM »
Hi. I've just but the bottom end crank cases back together all bolted up, selector shaft is in and now trying that all gears select correctly before I carry on. As I turn the main shaft by hand in the correct direction I hear the kickstart ratchet. In the other direction the main shaft is locked.  What have I done wrong?

CB500/550 / countershaft bearing?
« on: October 19, 2012, 04:00:42 PM »
Hello all.
Wow this rebuild is becoming time consuming but i'm still enjoying it.    Just found the countershaft bearing isn't looking to good and needs replacing so a quick call to david silver and i've drawn a blank.   Been online "cmsnl" who are showing this part is also unavailable.  Would anyone know where i might be able to find this part in order to continue my engine rebuild?

Thanks in advance.  jimbo

CB500/550 / Crankshaft shells?
« on: October 17, 2012, 05:25:02 PM »
Hi.  After stripping the engine down to thousands of parts im now inspecting everything and making a list of new parts to order.  Looking at the crankshaft shells they look a little scored and worn so thought i'd replace them while the motor is in bits.  I've measures the crankshaft and the journals seem good but not to sure on how to select the correct shells. I don't have an internal micrometer so measuring the case bolted together isn't really an option  I have ordered some plastigauge but this will be the first time using it so looking for some advice and helpfull tips.

Hello all.  Just started a rebuild on a 550f1 and cant find any info on the cylinder studs and con rod bolts.  Are they stretch bolts that are single use or can i get away with using them again?
