CB500/550 / Unused Jets?
« on: June 09, 2022, 10:49:57 AM »
Hey all,

I'm not here to start a 'what jets do I need thread' so don't worry! But this is, in some way a jet sourcing thread.

Does anyone have jets that they tested, didn't work, and are sitting unused they'd sell/swap? I'm looking for a range of jet sizes to test but sourcing sets is tough. Otherwise I'm going to continue to try and find a number of jet sizes to build a test inventory.

The bike in question!

I'm running open stacks and 2-into-2 shorty exhausts (baffled), 069A Carbs, stock jetting (Main #98, Idle #38) : running generally well, but with slight rich symptoms at low revs and lean at higher revs)

Main: I'd like to test both 1 and 2, possibly 3 jet sizes up for the main jets.

Idle: On some research, I'd also like to test one size down, along with some larger sizes. The working theory is that with the level of increased airflow, the carbs may be drawing in fuel from other circuits in addition to the idle circuit, creating a rich condition at idle that becomes lean later on.

Thoughts/advice always welcome, and if anyone has similar issues I'll help where I can

CB500/550 / Engine Rattle- Valves or more sinister?
« on: December 16, 2021, 11:18:55 AM »
See below for a little video- it's present at all revs and proportionate to the rpm- i.e louder with more rpm.

the cam chain has just been adjusted (this morning!) and the tensioner appears to be working fine. Next step for me is to check valve clearances though these were done just before the bike got on the road less than 100miles ago- so unless there is a bedding in/loosening they should be OK. Engine was fully rebuilt less than 100miles ago

Bike starts well, revs well, isn't hanging and only a little smoky. Seems to have good power

What does this noise sound like to any of you? I'm always conscious I don't know how these engines should sound- how much top end nose is normal....

I've searched around but it's quite hard to work out the different versions of engine noise people mention from other posts, so any help appreciated!

CB500/550 / Welded Cush Drive?!
« on: November 18, 2021, 09:47:45 AM »
I have myself some beautiful looking Lester Mag wheels- however on inspection the rear appears to have the cush rubbers removed and the hub welded to the sprocket carrier?

Does anyone know why someone might of done this? It can't be an easy thing to weld so hardly by accident, I imagine. This also raises some issues with replacing my rear wheel bearings...

CB500/550 / Rear Drum Brake Binding
« on: November 01, 2021, 10:30:17 AM »
Trying to set up a spoked rear wheel (1977) with a drum brake housing. For some reason, when using the axle spacers the wheel is incredibly tight to fit, and when it does fit it won't rotate (even with no shoes in the brake housing) as it appears the drum brake housing is being pushed into the wheel so that the wheel cannot rotate?

Would anyone have any insight into what is causing this issue? Do some model year drum brake housings not fit with certain rear hubs? Are there different size spacers for different wheels (mags/spoked?)

Thanks all!

Best,
R

CB500/550 / David Silver Reg/Recitfier
« on: October 10, 2021, 03:45:46 PM »
Hey all,

Was hoping you may be able to shed some insight- I'm driving myself insane with the multimeter and feel I am so very close to getting the bike on the road!

I have the DS replacement reg/rec, with 3x Yellow Wires, 1x Red, 1x Green, 1x Black (with two terminals at the end).

Now obviously this is meant to be plug and play in the new loom, but I've replaced my loom with a m.gadget one, and hence it I need to understand the wiring for this, and given the factory wiring diagrams don't show a combined reg/rec, I am stuck.

Coming off my bike I have the 3 yellow wires, 1x orange and 1x white. I presume these are the 3 phases, a field coil and I'm not sure of the function of the other.

Does anyone know how the DS reg rec needs to be wired in? What the functions of the red, green and black wires are and what they should connect to?

Once I've done that, it's patching the fuel tank and a rear light and I'm good to go.

What is it? / Odd Bearing Retainer (Front Wheel)
« on: June 03, 2021, 01:35:23 PM »
1977 CB550 F

I was under the impression the front wheel bearing retainer had only 4 notches, though this one seems to have a few more?!

Does anyone know what tool is required to remove this as the standard CB500 Front Wheel Bearing Retainer tool doesn't look like it's the right one

What is it? / Rear Swingarm, Disc
« on: March 23, 2021, 02:54:44 PM »
My bike came with this disc conversion? Consisting of a Lester Mag wheel, rear disc caliper and swingarm.

Anyone got any idea where it is from?

I'm building a CB550 and deciding whether to keep it or sell it on.

CB500/550 / Comstars
« on: March 21, 2021, 10:13:48 PM »
Hey all,

Bike: 1977 CB550 'F'

I've tried in vain to use the search function to see if this is out there but I admit I couldn't find anything useful.

One of the bikes I'm building is going wire-spoke, the other (mine) I'm tempted either to go for wire spoke which seems the easiest, or to investigate Comstars.

I know they are widely not liked, but personally I am quite fond of the Comstar wheels. Does anyone know which models' Comstars will fit the CB550? I'd love to get a set for my bike, but I am unsure whether it is going to require a substantial amount of machining or replacement forks, bearings, spindles or other parts!

The end goal is to go for dual front disc and rear drums.

I've currently got some Lester Mag wheels on the bike.

Misc / Open / Vapour Blasting/Engine Re-finishing
« on: March 18, 2021, 11:54:37 PM »
Getting deep into my engine teardown now on two CB550 engines and rebuild so getting to the stage where I am thinking about what route to refinish.

From what I read, vapour blasting seems to be liable to corroding pretty soon after it's done; how do people stop this- applying a clear varnish or other finish?

Also, do the engine casings have to fully disassembled before they can be blasted? Can engines be blasted assembled? I've stripped down the top-end, avoiding doing the bottom end if I can avoid it but would like to refinish the whole engine casing to bring it up to a 'new' look.

Had a quick search in the forum and couldn't find anything; though if this has been covered before my apologies!

Thanks all!

Project Board / Budget CB550, 'Parking Space' Build!
« on: March 17, 2021, 10:17:29 PM »
Hey all,

I've posted a few times asking for help and parts so thought it would be worthwhile starting a build thread. Bit of background: Over some of the lockdowns I built up a Suzuki GS125, thought the project took a bit less time than I was hoping and so after chatting with my neighbour I decided to up the stakes a bit and build 2x Honda CB550 'F2's- one for each of us!

Here is the Suzuki, recently finished and listed for sale.

I've picked up 2 engines, 2 frames, and some other not very useful parts and am slowly realising this is a much bigger project than the little Suzuki!

I've just started on a carburettor rebuild of the old PD's until I can track down some 069As to fit instead, so at least I have something. Seperately, I've started a a top end rebuild on both engines, which are heading off to Nurse Julie's for some inspection soon. (All credit to this forum for helping me arrange that)

Here is how they were when I found them

I've taken some timelapse videos so will post up a link soon.

P.S- I'll keep updating my Parts Required thread, so if you have any parts for a CB550 that you need rid of, please let me know and I'll likely what to offer you something for them!

New Member Introductions / Hey from London
« on: March 14, 2021, 02:00:21 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new to motorcycles but tinkered with classic cars for a while. In December I bought a Suzuki GS125 which I rebuilt into a cafe-racer. It went pretty well so I've moved up and bought 2x Honda CB550s to make one good cafe racer out of.

Very much learning as I go, so we will see what happens.

I'm going to do a post up in the build section in due course.

CB500/550 / Deciding Whether to Rebuild
« on: March 14, 2021, 01:57:45 PM »
Hi all,

I've just bought 2x Honda CB550Fs with the idea of combining to make one.

The previous owner told me that one of the engines ran recently, but has sat for around a year. Similar for the other.

The carbs clearly need a rebuild and I am planning on doing so, but should I re-build the entire engine? I'm unsure of its past and shining a torch down the valves show it's pretty grubby in there.

If so, would just a top-end rebuild suffice to 'check, clean, reseal and reassemble' or should I do the bottom end too?

The engine turns over, and I'm told it has good compression. There is no obvious signs of corrosion and everything /seems/ in order.

My workshop facilities are not great, so I'm eager to minimise doing unnecessary work if I can.
