CB500/550 / CB550F2 Cafe Rebuild Complete...ish
« on: March 05, 2023, 07:39:42 PM »
Hi

After 1.5yrs rebuilding my first ever motorcycle and a learning wall more than a learning curve I have completed (I know they are never finished) my interpretation of a mild cafe 550F.  It's covered the princely sum of 18 miles so far before being tucked up for the winter. These 18 miles showed me I needed to do something with the standard foot peg layout when using clubman bars (and being 6ft4),so I took the plunge and have for some Raask rearsets which on the face of it make the riding position much more less uncomfortable. Everything else seems to be working as it should with the exception of it running rather rich, but that will be sorted when I've actually taken it out for a proper run over distance and not just round the block. Last piece to fit is the front mudguard.

CB500/550 / 550F2 DSS Wiring Harness
« on: July 24, 2022, 02:10:45 PM »
I've reached the point I've been dreading in my build and that is the wiring. Me and electrics should have a restraining order against each other, as it is, in my opinion the work of the devil.

However, I've come to install the loom today however I have a lot of wires which simply do not match the plethora of wiring diagrams I have.

The loom is a brand new one from David Silver Spares and I wondered if anybody else here had experienced the same problems? For example, the wiring diagrams state brown wires running to the tail lights, however the loom doesn't have a single brown wire in it anywhere. The loom also has an orange with black stripe wire, but this is not on any wiring diagram.

The old loom removed matches all the diagrams perfectly and I'm now feeling rather lost. I'll give DSS a call tomorrow to see if they can help but thought I would also reach out to you guys for any advice.

Cheers
Phil

CB500/550 / CB550F2 Build Update
« on: July 17, 2022, 02:16:22 PM »
Hello all,

Its been a while since I first introduced myself to the forum and shared my build so I just though I would share the with you all the latest photo's of my mild cafe 550F2 project.  I also wanted to encourage those who, like me, have zero experience in the restoration of motorcycles that through using the amazing resource such as this forum that you can get there, because trust me if I can you can!

I would also really appreciate some constructive criticism or feedback as to what you think so far, because as i said this is the first one I've attempted and I am essentially building my dream bike (with the exception of an RC30 or 45).  The bike hasn't been hacked about as most cafe bikes are and can still be returned to stock easily if needed.  I didn't want to go for a loudy, shouty style but more of an understated one which captures the best of both worlds.

The build is not far now from being rideable, having started just over a year ago, and all I have now is *just* the electrics and then getting the thing fired up!

Cheers
Phil

CB500/550 / CB550 Short Cables
« on: June 11, 2022, 06:54:26 PM »
Hello

I was wondering if anybody on here knew of a UK supplier of shorter throttle and clutch cables for a CB550 which has been fitted with clubman bars?  I've found some on 4-into-1 in the US but the postage is a joke.  I'm building a mild cafe style bike and have progressed quite well so far since my last post, however being a rookie and this being my first every motorcycle restoration I have been caught out by the long standard cables.  Photos of my progress attached.

Cheers

Desperately Seeking!! / '77 CB550F Airbox
« on: May 17, 2022, 09:52:02 PM »
Hi, I'm after an airbox for a 77 CB550F.  Does anyone have one going? I was going to go pods but from reading lots about the standard box being better I thought I'd do that first. If anyone has one available please let me know.  Cheers.

New Member Introductions / Newbie from West Midlands
« on: January 03, 2022, 01:38:25 PM »
Hi, just wanted to say hi to everyone and introduce myself. I'm Phil and from the village of Wall Heath in the West Midlands. We purchased a 1977 CB550F last May and so far I've stripped it to its component parts and in the process of the rebuild into a very mild cafe style bike. We still want to retain the option of converting it back to stock in the future so no frame cutting or grinding here.
Bike was a fresh import from California in 2020 and was in overall excellent shape, but just needed freshening up.
Attached is the photo of how it looked last May and how it looks as of this morning. Please be gentle, it's my first bike restoration and a hell of a learning curve but its so far alot of fun, even though its caught me out a couple times already!
